Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 377

377 Slave Declaration

What ultimately convinced me were the two ladies who were inside the tent.

"We too would like to ask for your aid. We have been listening to your conversation. We are worried about the existence of traitors in our houses even if we get back home. Would you be so kind as to lend us your strength?"

They're obviously fishing for my sympathy.
And I have no heart to go against it. I can no longer decline becoming their bodyguard.

"Ha~, I got it. Then you have to listen to me. However, I'm not gonna outright reject your opinions if they're reasonable, just be selective. I'll take the job if you can agree to those terms."

The ladies nodded. So now I tell them.

"We're staying the night here today. It'd be nightfall by the time we arrived at the federation if we depart now with your pace. Hm? Speaking of, where'd that underling gone off to?"

I looked around and saw the guy hiding with his back glued on a nearby tree's trunk.

"What to do with this guy? Looks like he crossed us even with that slave collar. Might as well just dispose of him? ...But we need a guide..."

"P-please at least let me live! I'm begging you! I-I'll do anything! I swear I'm never doing harm to you guys! So! Please! Let me keep my life at least!"

The underling quickly rushed out into the open and prostrated himself.
Then a mysterious light came up on his collar.

"Hm? What's that light? From the collar...?"

The three ladies was staring at this as well.
The light eventually receded.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"Ha! C-crap!? Damn! C-can't get it off!"

Apparently the underling didn't notice the light itself but he seemed to know what was going on as he tried to take the collar off in a panic.

"Oy, you're gonna tell us what was that all about. What's the deal with that anyway?"

The underling turned at me with a look of resignation before starting his explanation while groaning.

That light is apparently a system that comes into place when the collar's wearer volunteers to become a slave on their own volition.
Once that's been activated, there's no way to take off the collar for life regardless who touches it.
Nobody wishes to become a slave. But if one who's wearing this collar verbally declares that they want to be one, the collar will activate this system with no exceptions.
It's something that almost never happens outside some sick plays.
This can also happen if someone deems another person as their master from the bottom of their heart, but nobody in modern times have exhibited this.

The underling has now reduced himself into Linda's servant. Or so the gist of his explanation goes.
Despite the prostration and verbal promises, this guy was definitely plotting plans to take the collar off and get away from us.
But his action of saying those words out loud was deemed enough by the collar to activate the system.

(Magic really can do anything, heck this is pretty terrifying stuff. I guess that's one less thing to worry about at least.)

However, this means Linda is responsible for this underling now.
Hence I asked her.

"Hey so, what's your plan with this guy? He's now your loyal servant, but if you don't want to deal with him for life, you can have me dispose of him."

Linda groaned at this. Even with that collar system, it seems she's not big on the idea of letting the guy who tried to kill her off the hook.

"I shall have him work as a forced laborer once he has led us out of this forest. He must atone for his crime. An attempt on chairman's daughter's life, a grave crime that warrants a death penalty. But now that he has that collar on, I suppose forced labor is on the table. It's a fate worse than death. He will work for life."

At this revelation, the underling put on his second deadly pale face today.
I got a bit taken aback at the fate worse than death bit as well.

Side Story Crying Brave

Hello hero here. I'm in the midst of carrying out a prison break.
Since there's apparently another kidnapped victim besides me, I'm now trying to find that person and see if I could escape with them.
I tried to use [Fair Wind Ear] but this hideout is unexpectedly huge, I had no success.
My escapade's gonna be in jeopardy if I tardy up and they notice me missing. Gotta find this person quick.
They'd likely tie me up even stringent if they caught me again. Escaping would be hopeless... I've put the necessary stuff in Item Screen, so offing myself is an option in a worst case scenario.

<<Items put in Item Screen don't get lost if you die that's right, but don't you think your outlook is kinda pessimistic...>>

Even though I know I'll get revived, dying is still scary to me so that's a last resort thing.
But I'd rather die than being made into a plaything by these bandits. I can only afford saying that because I know I'll get revived though.

...Hm? I can hear a high-pitched voice behind this door.
Clearly different from bandits... It's kinda sounding hysterical. Scary...
Could it be the kidnapped victim mentioned by those bandits?

I got in the room and found a row of cells inside, the same one used to lock me up.
How often do those guys kidnap people anyway... Or maybe this place was originally a prison.
I went deeper and came across a girl with both her hands tied behind her back.
She's got a red braided hair, groaning resentfully on the ground. She must be the girl the bandits mentioned.
Let's check her Status.

Hmm, she's about the same age as my current body.

<<Ooh, already Lv7 at 15. Ordinary Combat Job people are still busy with combat training or adventurer training at that age, she's quite high leveled considering.>>

Really? I mean I'm Lv10 aren't I.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

<<Well duh, you're an outlier. Normally going straight to leveling in real combat without any training is suicidal, you know? It's all thanks to your high Attributes you managed to do it by yourself.>>

Well, yeah. When you think about it, guess those protagonists in RPG must have been training before their departure... Let's get back on track.

She looks like a cute girl outwardly, if not for her glares staring dagger at me... Have I done something?

"Hey you! Are you one of those bandits lackeys!? Get me out of this place!"

She yelled aggressively toward me all of a sudden.
You're mistaken, I'm also kidnapped.

"Wait aren't you my age! How pitiful are you to serve bandits when you're so young!"

"Y-you're wr--"

"You must have been cast aside because you lounge around all day! That's how it always goes with people who lower themselves to banditry! Am I wrong!?"

"A, au..."

...What do I do, she kept roaring out whenever I tried to speak.
Heck, how many years since I last talked to a girl, how'd you expect me to deal with one this aggressive...

And she's right about me lounging around all day... Ah, my tears are coming out.

"Ha, and now you cry. Are you scared by a little girl like me yelling? What sorry sight."

"...I-I'm not... *sniffle*... A bandit..."

"..Eh? What? I can't hear you between your sniffles."

"I'm telling you, I'm not, a bandit!"

"...Wha?"

"Uuu.... I was going out of my way to save you, and look what I got, *sniffle*, so much yelling..."

"E-eeeh...?"

...I can't stop my tears. When was the last time I felt this downhearted.
I turned downcast and kept sobbing like a little kid.
...How uncool I am, wonder if this young body is affecting my mental state.

I cried for a good few minutes in front of the shocked girl.
...Some hero I am. I'm just a brat who burst into tears from being shouted by a girl. I wanna die. I'm so embarrassed I could just die.

<<E-err, it's okay Neora-san. Your weeping figure is so cute it stimulates the desire to protect.>>

That's not a consolation! You making fool of me?!

"H-have you calmed down...?"

"...Yes."

"...I'm sorry for yelling at you. Were you kidnapped by those bandits too?"

"Yeah, I was. I overheard them saying about another victim on my way out, so I went looking for you..."

"R-really now... I'm truly sorry for shouting so much at you after all the trouble you went through to save me."

"...Forget about it already."

The girl looked apologetic as she said that. While I replied to her curtly.
...What's with this scene. Are we grade schoolers.

<<More like kindergartners...>>

I'm gonna smash you to pieces if you continue, you dang 2D denizen.

I pulled myself together, unlocked her cell and cut the rope binding the red haired girl, Leviaria.

"Anyway, I should introduce myself. My name is Leviaria, an Apprentice Spear User, also an adventurer. Thank you for coming to my rescue."

"We haven't gotten out yet... I'm, Neo Raifu. Nice to meet you."

"What's your Job?"

"...Take a guess?"

"Well considering the dagger and your lockpicking, must be a Thief."

"OK, let's go with that."

"What do you mean!? Tell me straight!"

"Quit yelling so loud, what are we gonna do if those bandits come here."

"Then stop pulling my leg, you!"

I mean, there's no way she'd believe me if I told her I'm a Hero after that show of tears, explaining is a bother too.
Might as well just let her believe I'm a Thief. Ah, what a pain.

"Okay, we're gonna have to work together if we want to get out of this place, no objection right?"

"No, tell me first! We have to think about our formation if we end up fighting those bandits!"

"I'm a vanguard mostly. And it's not an if."

"Eh?"

Several bandits made their way inside this room full of cells from the only door.
...I told her.

"Oy, how the heck didja get outta your cell!"

"Oy oy, even that tomboy is here. How'd she get here from way over her cell."

"No, he ain't a tomboy, he's a girly boy."

I'm beating the crap outta those two who called me a tomboy and a girly boy.

"Some patrolling bandits got here cause you kept yelling, what now."

"...Eh? You're a boy?"

"Is this the time for that!? Haven't I been using 'Ore' to call myself!"

"I mean you're way cuter than average girls! How do you expect me to tell right away! Even your speech sounds more like a boyish girl!"

"...I feel like crying again."

"T-those guys started quarreling."

"Now's our chance, throw 'em back in the cells!"

The bandits rushed in while we were arguing.
I'm gonna vent my anger on these guys, dammitall!!

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 376

376 Guiding Light

I counterattacked by poking Irdis's forehead like a brawler who shoulders no evil creed.
The result is extraordinary. Irdis spun once in the air before falling down the ground hard. His cranium had been caved in.
He's gonna die. Even if you give an emergency care right away, his chance of survival is almost nil. So long as no one helps him.

"Y-you're... strong aren't you... Irdis is one of our best men. Yet you defeated him like he was a plaything..."

I got a praise? from Linda. I was playing around with the knife and the forehead poke for sure.
There was no effort put from me so her impression is right on the money.

"Thanks. Forget about that, I'm stumped now... Going to the federation is out of question. Do you know somewhere safe? Who was it again? Kanedor? As long as that guy's alive, there's no telling this guy is the only compromised men. I don't wanna send you home only to hear news about your assassination down the road."

Just accompanying these ladies home is no longer fit to be my 'goal'.
I'm getting pissed off at this Kanedor guy for dragging me into this mess.
A scumbag who schemes and hires thugs to kidnap women just to harass people.
If I were the Abarenbo Shogun, I'd have gone after and cut him down with my ninja subordinate.
Though that's usually done at the villain mansion's yard.

"Hey? Won't you work for me? I'd like to hire you and your strength. I will pay you handsomely. I'll even talk to father and formally contract you... No, I should speak my true feelings. I want to live. Please help me. I beg of you."

I got a bit taken aback by this. The high horsing Linda readily bowed to me. She even corrected her tone.
I'd like to accept her offer to honor her honesty. But I don't want to stick my neck in deeper. But I do want to give that Kanedor a good punch.
Hence I'm troubled. I keep pondering in silence for quite some time.

(Guess I'm fated to beat up this Kanedor guy... But how does something like fate work for someone who wishes to punch god like me anyway...)
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
I can hardly say the 'something' inside me to be a guiding light. I mean it's been guiding me to all kinds of messes I never asked, that's not a light.
And if that was the handiwork of god, it would only bolster my resolve to get a good hit.
If I end up meeting god after finding a way to do it by researching old documents or something, I am confident I won't hesitate to give a good whack.
That's how much rage festering inside me. So much so I could go mad.

However, I'm a man who lacks god's 'blessing'. Therefore this 'Guiding Light' must be a different being.
I know that I won't get an answer thinking that now. It's a waste of time. No point hurrying up the answer. Thus I stop thinking.

(Futile, everything is futile... I don't dislike futility, but there's no point to it now. There's nothing to gain.)

I groaned at my inability to come up with an answer.
Meanwhile Linda kept waiting for my reply without saying anything.

Side Story Prison Brave

Dammitall, guess my journey's gotta be this way.

Forgive me for cursing out of the blue. Hello everyone, it's your favorite hero-sama here.
I'm still a weakling who has finally reached Lv10 though.
Ah, right, I get new a Menu Function whenever I reach a certain Level threshold.
Lv10 gives me [Item Screen]. It lets me skip carrying around luggage.
Heck, why not just let me use these handy stuff right off the bat.

<<[Leveling up will reward you with new functions]. You get motivated if you know that right? This is one of those things, you see.>>

...Well, the conditions to Job Change for 'Hero' are apparently pretty harsh, so these clear goals do help make me more motivated, that's true.
What other functions are there?

<<It's a secret.>>

Quit screwing around. Stop putting on airs and just tell me.

<<I mean according to data from past heroes, not knowing what those functions are until they actually got them were more exciting.>>

No you, knowing those functions in advance helps planning the future easier, just tell me!
Like, I wouldn't have bought that stupidly huge rucksack had I known about Item Screen!

<<I will not. You'll find out on your own if you raise your level anyway, give it up...  By the way, speaking of plans, what's your short term one?>>

Can't you tell from this situation, take a gander?

<<...Escaping this place I guess.>>

Where is this place anyway?

<<A prison.>>

Yup, or more precisely, a prison inside a bandit hideout.

Blast it! The wagon I was taking to another town got attacked by bandits along the way, and just when I was about to go help, one of theirs was lurking inside the wagon and put me to sleep!
I heard a blow dart behind me as I was about to get down the wagon and then I found myself behind these bars when I came to.
Heck, a guy carrying around a blow dart is a prime suspect no matter how you look at it. Menu, you could've warned me!

<<No no no! You can't say that someone is a baddie just because they're carrying a blow dart! Well, the guy who shot that dart had Assassin Job but he was so brazen about it I thought I didn't have to warn you. I admit that was careless of me...>>

Assassin Job should have put him into a priority danger list! There's nobody out there not wary of one!
...Well, I'm also at fault for not checking people Jobs around me.

<<Rather than arguing who's at fault here, you'd better think up a way to escape instead.>>

Good call. Now then what do.
They had my hands tied up but I cut the rope off with a knife from Item Screen earlier.
The issue now is how to get out of this prison.
I can break down the iron bars with Axe Art or the likes, but that's gonna cause a loud sound alerting the bandits.
Should I break the wall? No can do. Even if I could, that's another source of loud sound.
...Don't I have another card I could use?

<<How about using Lockpicking Skill? There's that hairpin you can probably use to lockpick in your Item Screen.>>

A hairpin? When did I put one?

<<You know, it's the gift you got from that baldie.>>

Aaaaah!! That's right! I didn't want to remember darn it!
He kept bringing the thing back to me when I threw it, so I just put it away in Item Screen so it'd stay there forever!
One reason I was heading to another town was because of that guy...
I just knew hey would follow me to every town I go so I opted to board an early morning wagon!
...W-well, whatever. Time to pick the lock and get out--

Click clack click
Clack clack clack...
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

...This stuff is pretty hard. Come to think of it, this is my first time even trying to pick a lock with a hairpin, my past life included, of course it's hard.

<<By using a Lockpicking Skill's function, [Key Scan], you will understand the lock's layout. Should make the effort easier.>>

Hm, let's give it a shot.
...But aren't Lockpicking a Thief's Skill? Why'd Hero need it.

<<I mean, isn't it coming in handy right now. Don't you worry about these trivial stuff~.>>

Yer right... Oh, I see. Gotta bend the hairpin a bit, and twist at the one just before the last one...

Click

Alright, got it open!
Hmhmm, that was nothing.

<<It only took 30 minutes...>>

Chutup. It's open in the end anyway!
Now then, next up the getaway... No wait, somebody else on that wagon might have gotten kidnapped too, maybe I should look around first?

<<Oh, Neora-san was the only passenger kidnapped from that wagon.>>

Why!? Wasn't there that one old man who looked obviously rich! They'd have gone straight for him!

<<Err, that old man was let go after they took all his belongings. I think they kidnapped you because of your good looks, Neora-san.>>

Good looks? That is to say?

<<Neora-san is so good looking, it's hard to tell whether you're a man or a woman at a glance, so they're probably going to sell you off as a love slave. I believe that's probably it.>>

Don't even joke about that! I don't wanna end up being a pet to some hag.

<<Hag is one thing, at worst a man might-->>
Please stop, no more I beg of you.
Gotta get the hell out of here before it comes to that.

Using Stealth Skill, I sneakily got past the sentries and made my way toward the exit.
Kinda feels like I'm a spy or a ninja. I want a cardboard. Will I get Ninjutsu Skill or something sneaking around like this... Yeah right, like that exists.

<<Ninjutsu Skill does exist you know?>>

It does!? I was just joking around since I didn't see it on the list.

<<Well, only Jobs branched from Ninja can obtain that extremely rare Skill. Even Hero who's capable of learning all kinds of Combat Skill can't get it.>>

Ah right, Goddess did mention that there were very few exceptions to Skills I can get.
So Ninjutsu is one of those huh. Couldn't she just give it along with Lockpicking Skill.

<<It's because [Ninjutsu] is really strong. Even Lv1 has an ability that allows its user move inside shadows at super high speed. If you got that, you'd probably stop relying on other Skills so it's likely some sort of preventive measure.>>

What the heck, I wanna use that. Escaping this place would have been a cinch. That's just a Cheat.

<<Are you one to talk with your super cheat Job, Hero Neora-san...? Grass is greener and all that stuff.>>

Well, I guess, Hero can do anything so it's a cheat alright but like the me right now don't have a Skill exclusive to Hero.
You just can't help yourself but yearning at such a special Job like Ninja.
...Don't tell me those other minor Skills I can't get are all super powerful.

<<You're pretty sharp. Honestly, even one of those Skills alone would make its user the main force of a party. The conditions to get them are all super grueling though.>>

Mwu, hearing that kinda vexes me.
...Well, I'm already plenty cheatful right now, guess I shouldn't ask for more.
Now then, time to get out.

...Hm? I'm hearing voices nearby. Those bandits chatting?
Activating Martial Art Skill Lv2 [Fair Wind Ear] to listen to low volume distant voices.

"We had a stupid big haul this time! Got a laugh out of that upstart old man's face after we stripped him bare too! Sniveling with snots all over his face hahahahaha!"

"That kid on board's a fine article. Gonna fetch a high price, fer' sure."

"The kid who was roaming around by herself the other day was quite a catch but this one's even better... Ya guys mind if I have a taste before we sell her off?"

"Sure, go for it, but that's a guy ya know? Didja swing that way?"

"Eh?"

"Eh?"

"Eh, wait, what?"

....

I-am-a-man!

Don't you 'Eh?' me! What's the deal with every single one of you!!
...Whatever, I'm gonna get caught if I keep loitering here, let's just forget about that conversation and get out.
But one thing caught my attention. That roaming kid or something. There might be another kidnapping victim here besides me.
I'll escape with them if it looks like I can help them... If things don't look good, I'm gonna bring the guards here after I get to a town. Yep that petty man's train of thought is from me, a hero.

375 Won't Let It

"I won't let you though? What makes you comfortable going on and on while ignoring me anyway? You don't even try to comprehend why your sword broke, are you stupid? Dunno what that underling told you, but your lack of wariness is hilarious. You're just an overconfident small fish in a small pond."

I provoked Irdis to make him focus on me.
All the villains I came across to so far believe that they'll always be fine, their opponents are no big deal all while boasting their strength.
Reasons include numerical superiority, having authority on their side, going mad from all their wrongdoings, and judging their foe by looks alone.
All baseless stuff. Only pure 'strength' deals the ultimate hands on one's life and death, yet the majority of these scoundrels seem incapable of understanding that, wonder why?
You can't judge 'strength' from outward looks alone. First strike kill exists due to that.

A strike nobody can possibly handle. Trying to overturn it results in them getting beaten to death. That's first strike kill.
The way to deal with it is to counter the hard to pull attack with a fatal strike on your own. This is a powerful strength.
You absolutely can't judge it by the looks alone.

This Irdis guy should have the strength to back his position as a bodyguard.
Yet he doesn't seem to get that concept.

My strength lies in a different dimension though.

"...Oy, say that to my face again I dare you. Me, a small fish? You got a death wish? Looking down on me... fine. I'mma make you regret. Die."

Irdis thrust his dagger at me without any hesitation.
Targeting a vital point that would be fatal.
But the attack stopped midway the moment I entered Acceleration state.

(Once I'm in this state, anything is a small fish.)
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
I cut off Irdis's dagger from the hilt up.
Then I grab that cut blade on my hand before undoing Acceleration.

"Heh... Where'd your big talk's gone to huh? Guess you can't even talk no more... what?"

Naturally there's no fatal wound. Irdis quickly noticed how weird it felt.
The dagger didn't dig in my flesh, or even clothes. Irdis leaped back with a look of shock at that fact.

"Here's a quiz. What is this thing? The answer is that dagger's blade."

I'm fooling around too much but I just don't care anymore.
Might as well have a bit of fun.
I flaunted the broken blade at Irdis.

"How? Some kind of trick? ...Tch! Oy! The hell did you do?"

"You're really a dumbass through and through... This is the end of the line for you. Like are we even in friendly terms enough for me to tell you my secret? Of course not. You're a fecal matter and I'm your average man stuck with the job to wipe it off, you damn criminal."

Looks like I have tendency to provoke my enemy when I'm fed up.
Irdis got so mad the veins on his head popped up as he charged at me with his fists.

Scarymast

"...You, aren't you getting carried away with this harassment?"

"Come again?"

Hi, hello. After having our lunch, we're now at the adventurer guild to report the culling and deliver the herbs.
Once I put down a huge bundle of Hiruka grass and other antidote herbs on the counter, the receptionist sent a look like she was looking at garbage my way. I wonder why.
But I only did what she told me and worked hard without relying on the two, maybe 197 pieces of grass is still not enough?

"You started gathering this morning, there's no way you could've gotten this many. Can you even pick apart these herbs without Appraisal? Being told by a Skill-less leech man to Appraise a mountain of random weeds is a hindrance to my work, cut it out."

"No, I picked them all up on my own."

"That's what you want to believe, right? I told you, picking apart those herbs takes a lot of time without a Skill. Can you even tell the minute differences in the leaf veins and such?"

"...If that's the case, how about appraising a few of them?"

"No way. Even just Appraising one is tiring, I don't wanna play along with a childish old man's prank. Get it? Now go and dump this pile of 'weeds' outside."

'Shoo shoo', the receptionist girl waved her hand like she was shooing an animal.
...Are guild staff members allowed to drive people away on their own without Appraising?

<<In cases such as this, they have the right to if the result of an Appraisal on one piece of grass comes out as weed. However, this condition has not been fulfilled as she has not Appraised one.>>

...Is this girl even aware of the guild's rules. Well, I can't blame her thinking I'm pranking her bringing this many herbs on a short notice.
Guess I was acting childish. Should have started with 20.
Wait no! I can tell the wrath overflowing out of the two behind me!

"Oy, you're holding up the line, get outta the way if you're done. I been waiting--"

""Ah?""

"Hiiyiiee!!?"

An adventurer man who was waiting in line behind us complained and then screamed when the nearly erupting ogre (Alma) and yaksha (Reina) glared at him.
...Alma aside, even Reina sounded pissed. Women are scary.

"Hey, take it outside if you're gonna raise a stint. Or you want me call our guildmaster and let her do the honor?"

"You called?"

"!!? G-guildmaster!"
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

The receptionist tried to drive us out before suddenly sounding panicked when a woman who showed up out of nowhere behind her replied.
...No really, when did she get there? I didn't even see her coming. Does she have Stealth Skill or something?
This woman is the guildmaster huh. Think she's around my age? She's got a red pony tail with intense-looking slanted eyes, pretty tall for a woman. About my height.
...First impression-wise, she might very well be the scariest guildmaster I've come across so far. Daijel's one has her beat in term of scary-looking face though.

"Any trouble here? It's a trouble isn't it? Tell me it is."

"Eh, ah, y-yes. T-this person here went out this morning to gather herbs and brought back this pile of grass. I don't believe it's anything but a prank, or more like a harassment."

This girl started speaking politely all of a sudden. Well, I guess she can't act the way she usually does with that intense aura behind her.

"That's a lot for sure. That black haired man brought it in? ...Mwu, black haired man, lots of herbs... Oy, mind if I ask you something?"

"G-go ahead."

I got startled by her suddenly speaking to me. Scaryy.

"Did you come here from Daijel through Vinfitt?"

"Eh? Y-yes, that's right."

"...I see. Oy, Naima. Appraise that bundle of herbs, leave none behind."

"E-eeh!? A-are you saying I have to work on this entire batch alone!?"

"Do it."

"Hiie, y-yes ma'am!!"

After I gave my reply, guildmast looked like she got it and told Naima the receptionist to Appraise the herbs I brought.
No, she tried to protest but folded right away after a glare... It may look like an abuse of power at first, but this particular case is more a boss reprimanding her employee for slacking off at work so it's safe.

"Apologies. Our staff member has wronged you."

"O-oh no, I don't really mind."

"I've heard about you from Velga. I had an inkling you would be coming here sooner or later. Sooner it is huh, Kajikawa-kun."

So Daijel's guildmast contacted this person too. GJ.
But man, this person sure is intense. Scary faced guildmaster, abbreviated scarymast, let's call her that from now on... It's absolutely not an abbreviation of scary guildmaster.

"Oy, Naima. Appraise this man's Kill Log. Ah, do not utter anything that looks amiss out loud, you hear me?"

"Y-yes ma'am... !!?"

"See? Do not look down on this man just because he's got no Skill."

...The receptionist who finally saw my Kill Log had a complete shift of expression, from begrudging eyes to like she's seeing a monster. Please, there's no need to look so shocked.

"Feel free to consult me whenever if you're troubled by our guild. I too won't hold back asking your cooperation when the time calls for it."

"Eh, ah, okay."

I replied reflexively but that sounded like she's gonna push dangerous job on me when trouble comes?
I wanted to protest back but the timing was awkward, and above all this person is too scary. How'd it come to this.
The other adventurers who were enjoying their food and drink are all looking this way nervously too ever since this person showed up.

"Folks, be at ease, no need to mind me. Take this chance to take a breather from a hard day work."

That's impossible. I can tell the air in this place is tensing up by just you being here.
It's like having your boss suddenly turning up during a nice lighthearted meal between relatives.

"Uuu, my head is splitting from so many Appraisal..."

"You said something?"

"Aah~! Appraising herbs is so much fun~! It's oh so fulfilling~!"

"Glad to hear that."

That was just from the receptionist girl grumbling a bit... I felt a bit guilty for causing this.
But well, I wouldn't have to resort to this if she didn't act that way in our first meeting.
Now that we're done with cashing out our reward, time to shop ingredients for dinner and go back to our inn.
...Wonder what should I cook up today.

374 The One Pulling the String?

However, that sword was without a blade from the hilt up, Linda's neck remained unharmed.
Of course the sword would have cut her artery if it weren't for that.
But I won't let that happen.

"...Sheesh. I figured you'd pull this crap. Why do I always get dragged into these templates? Ah, it's so embarrassing."

Getting the role to do this 'classic' development feels so embarrassing. And now I'm part of the template. What a joke.

I had entered Acceleration the moment Irdis drew his sword.
The answer was simple. I just cut off the sword's blade with a knife on his waist.
The law of Acceleration is a complete mystery even now. It doesn't matter how hard an object is. I cut it like a butter.

"Wha!?" Irdis let out a surprised yelp, while Linda followed with "Eh?"

"Oh right, we never put a 'condition' on the underling. So he was 'free' to do what he wanted outside the order. Like calling his cohort after accomplishing the order? It's my fault for overlooking that."

I forgot to put a restriction on the underling's actions. That had to be done to prevent stuff like this.
This is the end result. The underling called reinforcement.
Irdis is a cohort of the kidnappers, or perhaps he goes beyond that.
That's abundantly clear after his attempt on Linda's life.

"Wh-! Wh-! Why Irdis! Have you gone mad!?"

Linda who finally realized she almost got killed yelled at Irdis.

"Tch! Why'd this damn sword broke now of all time?! Missed my chance to kill her! Well fine. A dagger suffices to kill one feeble woman."

I went back to my original position after breaking Irdis's sword.
So he was under a false impression that his sword broke by itself. But the underling who had been watching us behind a tree all this time seemed to infer that I did something, reminiscence of the time his comrades died. His face went deadly pale.

"It's cause Kanedor-sama requested it. Once you're dead, Lolengus old man's gonna regret taking the chairman position, that's the idea. Get it done and I'll be showered with enough money to last a lifetime of indulgence, how'd anyone refuse? I'm fed up with this no-future escort knight job and having to constantly please some woman. I only took this job cause the terms said I don't have to do much, but no, you just gotta make me accompany you all over the place every single damned day."

Seemingly feeling refreshed after spitting all that out, Irdis revealed a sleazy grin on his face.
He's speaking like Linda is as good as dead already.

"What, so you're telling me this Kanedor guy is the one pulling the strings behind the scene? These kidnappers and revolutionary army thing must be all funded by this same guy too. This Kanedor guy is the source of rottenness."

With all the information I have now, there's no doubt about it.
However, there's no point accusing the guy if we have no evidence.
I'm sure my reasoning is correct. Though it's only a guess at this point. Without physical evidence, trying to expose his evil deeds is like a pie in the sky.
This Kanedor won't ever admit his crimes until he's cornered to the very end with no escape path.
He'd just flat out reject Irdis's testimony too, 'I don't remember saying that'. Keeping this guy alive as a witness is almost definitely meaningless.

But Linda has now grasped the reason why she was kidnapped.
She looks shell-shocked just from hearing my shoddy conjecture.

"Welp, time to die. The remaining two women will follow after you. Heck, even that brat's coming too, you ain't gonna feel lonely, no worry yeah?"

Irdis flaunted the dagger in his hand at Linda while slowly walking up to her, careful not to let her escape.

Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 102

Leveling

We booked rooms at an inn after we were finished with the guild business.
I was afraid the sounds of waves would disrupt my sleep, turned out it was barely a bother.
Well they do say that the sound of flowing water has a calming effect, might apply to waves too.
...Or maybe I was just tired from all the wagon's shaking and the guild receptionist's attitude.

The morning after, we headed for the Monster Prairie located a bit away from the town in order to do the leveling and herb gathering.
The usual signboard surrounded by bushes written with 'Danger zone ahead - Entry to Monster Prairie Ruiaisa prohibited without permission' could be found near it. This would be the third signboard.
At a glance it looks nothing more than a tranquil vast prairie, but I can sense mana reactions from magic beasts all over the place.
It's all weak mobs cause we're near the entrance. They're just right for Reina.

"This field is soo large~. And the weather is so nice too I'd have loved to bask in the sun if not for the magic beasts."

"Our goal today is leveling. Even weak magic beasts may prove dangerous to you Reina. Stay alert."

"Yes ma'am."

I'm mostly leaving Reina's leveling to Alma.
The only low level magic beasts I know are all humanoid ones like goblins and kobolds.
Yet there's way more small quadruped beasts lurking in this Monster Prairie.
Apparently Alma traveled around with her parents before she came of age and learned about a wide variety of magic beasts during their travel. Her knowledge extends to the magic beasts found in this prairie.
The only quadruped beasts I know are the large stuff like Rush Boars or High Cave Bears, I know nothing on what to teach about the beasts here.
Heck, I'd love to participate as well but that'd only hinder Reina's progress, so I decided to stay an observer from afar.
In short, I'm gonna be busying myself digging out herbs in the corner. Dig dig dig... I haven't done this work in a while, as somber as ever.

"I feel like I can sense the sorrow hanging on Kajikawa-san's back as he plucks out those herbs at incredible speed..."

"Hikaru, don't pluck up too many okay."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

But of course. Apparently over plucking Hiruka grass in a cluster will slow down its growth.
Heck, why's there so many herbs this early in the prairie anyway. Maybe the land here is more fertile than the one around Daijel?

<<Many lower grade herbs such as Hiruka Grass grow well in the outer circumference of Monster Prairie. The deeper it is, the better quality of rare herbs grow. However, be warned that the magic beasts are also higher leveled.>>

Umu, I'm curious about those rare herbs but we've gotta focus on Reina's leveling for the time being.
I'd like to wait until Reina reaches Level 10 and has a Job Change at least. We should stay in these early areas for now.

"Ah Reina. Careful about that small magic beast coming from behind you."

"Eh? Whoa!? Something small is zigzagging fast this way!"

Magic Beast: Horn Rabbit

Level 1

State: Normal

[Attributes]
HP (Health): 25/25
MP (Mana): 5/5
SP (Stamina): 24/29

STR (Strength): 50
ATK (Attack): 50
DEF (Defense): 48
AGI (Agility): 80
INT (Intelligence): 9
DEX (Dexterity): 37
PER (Perception): 100
RES (Resistance): 14
LUK (Luck): 47

[Skills]
Magic Beast Level 1, Quadruped Beast Level 1

Oh a level 1 magic beast, when was the last time I came across one again.
It's a rabbit with a horn, but man wild rabbits sure don't look cute. No it's nothing to do with the horn, it's just that its build and expression look kinda menacing.
Its eyes are red too and clearly hostile.
It's zigzagging at high speed, attacking by ramming its horn.
Reina just narrowly managed to dodge the attack.

"Wha, how is ambush a fair game!?"

"Of course it's a fair game. You're up against a magic beast."

"Reina, calm down. Its movement may look chaotic at first but it always starts to zigzag around whenever it moves in to attack, that makes it easy to read instead."

"R-really? Ah, it's coming here again!"

It went ramming in again but just Alma said, it kept moving in a simple pattern of left right, left right. Looks like an easy foe to kill if you just stay calm.

"...Left, right, left, riiight!!"

STAB. Her dagger went inside the attacking rabbit's belly.
She observed and read its movement nicely, she just thrust out her dagger and let the momentum pierced itself.
She then twisted the dagger to finish it off. This little girl is scary.
By the way, her dagger is not the bear fang one but an ordinary iron knife. She might end up over relying on that if we let her start with a powerful equipment, gonna have to make do with an iron knife until her first Job Change.

"M-my first kill!"

"Congrats Reina, well done... You made it look so easy. I had a much harder time with my first kill."

'I did it!' Reina looked like she was beaming that word as she held the rabbit she killed high up over her head. Quit that, the blood's gonna drip on you.
Alma smiled wryly looking like she felt mixed as she praised Reina.

"Alma-san was right, it was very easy to read... Faaar slower than Kajikawa-san during our sparring matches."

"...Ah, un, I get it."

Umu umu, if this is the result then I guess that incomprehensible training wasn't pointless. It bothers me how the two of them got this distant look in their eyes though.
If she keeps this up, she should get one or two levels today. I won't force her though.
Whoops, gotta remember to store Horn Rabbit in Item Screen. Can probably make some cash out of its fur, horn and meat.

It's now been around three hours since Reina killed the first rabbit.
She's killed 15 magic beasts in total since then. Isn't that amazing for a solo runner?

<<She is presently killing magic beasts around three times more than average adventurers around her level.>>

...This girl is pretty Cheat too.
Most were Horn Rabbits but mixed among them was one biggish wolf-type magic beast.
It was Level 6 so I was gonna lend a hand but then she 'Shadow Dive'd inside the wolf's shadow before stabbing her dagger on its head as it was bewildered at her sudden disappearance.
Who knew Ninjutsu Skill could be used like that in a close quarter combat...! I shudder at the thought of antagonizing Reina.

"Reina, are you okay?"

"T-that was scary...!"

I don't blame her flopping down after killing the wolf. I mean that came out of nowhere.
...Reina who easily disposed of it is scarier to me though.
Her fatigue seems to have piled up from all the hours killing rabbits and this wolf was the clincher. Doesn't look like she can move for a while now.
We're done for today. Let's have a lunch and rest a bit before going back.
...I've dug out lots of herbs too. Fufufu.

373 Non Intersecting

"Stop right there. Who are you? Answer me."

A man in a knight armor showed up. He's got no helmet, his head is laid bare to see.
The underling we sent to call for help is following behind him.

"Who do you think you are, knave? Where's the young lady. Let her out. Otherwise I'll cut you down. Do as you're told, and I'll overlook you."

"We ain't even on the same wavelength!? Why do I always get stuck with this type? Can it please stop, I'm begging here please? At least try to establish a conversation. Hey? Answer me. Who are you? Start with that."

"Oy, I won't repeat myself. She must be in the tent behind you, isn't she? Get out of the way."

The knight man tried to get closer and I stopped him by holding my hands aloft.

"Are you alone? That's weird. Why'd they send a lone man to rescue the chairman's daughter? How isn't that suspicious. Tell me why you're here alone. I'll get outta the way once you do and bring the ladies here."

The knight frowned after I said that. He must interpret the line 'bring the ladies here' as them not being here. The knight took a step forward before stopping.

"Oy, where is she? Confess. Or else I'm gonna torture it out of you. Now's your last chance if you don't wanna get hurt. Make it quick before I change my mind."

The knight put his hand on his sword's hilt. His face with shoulder-length all-back hair is sneering while looking down on me.
Man is acting so aggressive even though there should be nothing to hide. Makes it all the more suspicious.
If he's really here to save the ladies, he should have at least sounded worried about their safety yet he's full on blaring his hostility towards me instead.
If he won't answer my next question right, he's out.

"I've saved those young ladies. I'm not your enemy. Take it down a notch please. Those ladies are in somewhere safe right now. They're unharmed. Rest assured."

It's a lie. Where can you find a place like that in this forest? Those ladies are in the tent. I don't know if they're still sleeping. But everything should be clear with the knight's reaction to my word.

"That doesn't matter. I reiterate. Tell me where they are. Otherwise I'll kill you."

"Why would you kill me? I rescued them, you know? Or what, is it bad for you if I live? I don't mind telling you where they are, but why won't you ever answer me? Tell me. Who are you?"

Thus our utterly non-intersecting conversation continued. The knight spoke to the underling.

"Oy, you sure this guy really did it? I don't feel mana from him. Guy got amateurish form too. Well fine. I'll just give him a good shaking he wish he'd die. It's too late to regret, that's what he deserves for disobeying me."

"Irdis? Have you come for me? Of course you do, you are my personal bodyguard after all."

Linda came out of the tent at this timing.
She seemingly didn't hear our conversation as she nonchalantly walked up to Irdis.

"My lady, you are safe. What a relief. Are you hurt anywhere?"

Irdis's hostile gaze instantly turned gentle as he turned his sight at Linda.
His hand was still grasping his sword's hilt however.
He then proceeded to draw his sword aimed at Linda's neck.

Port Town Arrival

Tens of minutes after arresting the bandits. The port town finally came into view.
Hello, me here inside a wagon with the worst mood hanging in the air. Thanks to me terrifying the people here with my loud voice when I yelled at those bandits.
Trying to talk to them might make it worse instead, the only thing I can do is to stay still and silence.

"...I think the last time Hikaru got that mad was the day we ran from Daijel."

"So that wasn't the first time..."

"Un, he yelled so loud and hit a baron hard when that baron tried to make me serve under him."

"Oh right, I remember you telling me about that story. He seemed super mad too when that guy (father) threw a bottle my way. I rarely see Kajikawa-san gets mad when it comes to himself."

"Well duh, anybody would when they got an arrow stuck to their head."

"No uh, they'd be long dead before that..."

Well yeah.
...I'm really gradually turning into a monster, aren't I. Scared of myself.

"You weren't mad because that arrow hit you, were you?"

"...?"

The merchant man who had been averting his eyes all this time spoke all of a sudden.

"Once you took that arrow off, your expression only turned grim after looking at those ladies. You must be imagining, 'What if this hit them?'"

"...Well, yeah."

Man, you could have kept it to yourself even if you noticed. It's embarrassing.
Heck, why'd this mister choose to speak now after the silent treatment.

"I thought you were a menacing lad when I saw you yelling at those bandits. But now that I think about it, you're a passionate man who gets mad on other people's behalf. I like that."

"You're putting too much credit on me. Even earlier I just went with the flow."

"'S fine, 's fine, I get ya... I go by the name 'Kanakmatt'. It's thanks to you my goods got out safe. Give me a holler if you see me peddling at the town, I'll give you a discount."

"Ookay."

The man went on to have an understanding and thanked me on his own.
I didn't particularly do that for other.
The reason I don't get mad isn't because I don't have anything or fine with it, I'm just used to it. Like half given up.
...Well whatever. Might as well take up his offer. Depends on what he's selling though.
Oh, and we're finally here, what a long journey.

Port town 'Randorainamu'.
There's no checking station for incoming and outgoing traffic like in other towns, but you can see ships coming and going at the sea side as befitting of a port town.
The seafood is naturally abundant here, yet that's not the only thing this town has as it also receives goods from other islands and continents, resulting in a kind of variety different from Vinfitt.
Umu umu, that alone is worth going afar.

"The scent of seas, it's salty."

"Fuwaaaa... I've never seen the sea before in my life..."

"You can hear the sound of waves crashing between all the hustle bustle... Wonder if that's gonna negatively affect our sleep."

The three of us gazed at the port town each with our own impressions. You've got this hard to describe feeling whenever you go to a new town, it's exciting.
We should go to the guild after handing over the bandits to the authority.
I'd love nothing more than to sample the seafood right away, but it's already getting dark out, gonna save it for tomorrow.

We arrived at the guild by referencing signposts.
It looks more like a beach hut than a normal building cause it's built on the coast. You'd think they'd be selling lemonade here.
It's got handrails instead of walls too, very liberating compared to guilds in other towns.
Entering the venue, I see many circular tables set up inside with adventurers eating and drinking like in a tavern... You sure this place is an Adventurer Guild? Or is it a seaside clubhouse?
We went to the receptionist to take magic beast culling commissions.
...A blue curly haired lady in her late teens is resting her chin in one hand looking lethargic. She looks obviously unmotivated, is this guild really okay.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

"...Ah, welcome, don't think I know you. Newbies?"

"...Ah no, we came from another town. We'd like to take commissions to cull magic beasts from tomorrow on."

"Ah, really... Uwaa, what's with your Status. Skill Unobtainable, what the heck is that. Your Job is Unidentifiable too, can you even fight?"

"Well, to a degree yes."

"Your Attributes aren't half-bad yeah sure, but without Skills you'd better give it up. How about herb gathering over here? You can find those herbs near the entrance to Monster Prairie, pretty safe gig all things considered."

"Err, we're mainly here to raise our party new recruit's level."

"Ah, so the girls behind you do all the fighting, you a leech?"

...What's with this girl's attitude?
I mean she's at least kind enough to recommend herb gathering I guess. But she should know I can deal with magic beasts if she just confirms my Kill Log.

<<...It appears she only appraised select entries because she found it bothersome.>>

Is this girl okay. Is this guild okay.

"Well whatever. Don't leave it all to those girls, earn your keep too you hear me, leech man. Here, take these culling and gathering cards and move along now."

"...Thank you."

She went and labeled me a leech and even handed over a herb gathering card we didn't ask for.
When was the last time people looked down on me due to my lack of Skills again. It kinda feels nostalgic.

"...Hikaru is not--"

"Well then, we will rest up at an inn today and start working hard tomorrow. Thank you for your help."

"Oou, you go get to work."

...I stopped Alma who was about to pop up and hurriedly left the guild.
Alma looked displeased but there's no point in raising a commotion and bringing us trouble for this.

"...That receptionist was not nice."

"She made fun of Kajikawa-san just because he doesn't have Skills... I'm kinda getting mad too."

"Calm down, I'm used to it. Besides, I can simply show it up to her through work, not word."

"But..."

"Also, it's been awhile since my last herb gathering routine, this is good for a change... I'mma dig a lot, oh I sure do gonna dig it out fufufufu."

"K-Kajikawa-san, you got this really creepy face with that laugh, we're talking about herb gathering right? We're not gonna head off to kill a giant magic beast or something, are we?"

"...I feel a bit bad for that receptionist."

Reina looked confused while Alma seemed to have inferred what's gonna happen.
Now then, time to find out who's ballsier, that girl earlier or Neia-san?

372 Consideration

I finished cooking the meat after a while. The only seasoning is a sprinkle of salt. Rabbikk meat has no gamey taste to it, enabling it to mix its meaty flavor with any spice well. Put simply, it's plain.
I've added some wild edible plants as well, so it should be filling.
I got us all our own bowl of piping hot soup.

"You all must be hungry. Here you go, oh and I don't need reward for this, eat to your heart's content. I've got seconds too."

It's noon now, a good time for lunch. The ladies can't seem to comprehend how there are a table and chairs out here.
They hesitated for a bit before seemingly giving up and sitting down. That got them near the steamy hot soup, resulting in their stomachs growling.
They turned downcast as if to hide their embarrassment. I pretended to overlook that and spoke sarcastically.

"Dunno what kinda food you usually have. I bet it's all high class stuff no? I'm sure this simple soup won't satisfy you, but bear with it. It'll fill you up at least."

I though it was actually pretty luxurious with all the ingredients, but that's an impression from a village man.
It must be laughable to daughters of federation's bigwigs.

But the word that came out of them after they took a spoonful was 'delicious'.
Afterward, nobody else spoke as they worked on their soup.
Even Linda asked for seconds. Their hunger must work as a spice here.
I finished my meal meanwhile.

"...That was quite the feast. How could I not reward you for this?"
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
Linda hadn't given up, she kept pushing from another angle this time.
I warded it off while washing the tableware.

"Naw, no need. Getting rewarded for this is absurd. I'm fed up with this development. I'm busy thinking how to make myself scarce later. If you have time to bother me, you have time to worry about your own safety."

I kept refusing her. I just know accepting this reward is gonna plunge me down the rabbit hole.
Hence I bluntly cut Linda off to make her give up.
That may sounds strange coming from me who repulses connections with others.

(I'm always thinking about myself, I just don't express it well. Despite saying I want to run away... The circumstances never allow me to.)

If I run when things aren't finished yet, the thought of it will constantly haunt me forever.
The more I do that, the more it piles up. The luggage of regret.
Not wanting to carry that around with me is the biggest reason why I only get away when the time is right.
I have no choice but to hang around until that time. Nothing I can do about that.

"This tent's got sleeping bags inside, go ahead and use them. I'll keep a look out. Or do as you want if you don't trust me."

"You're really considerate for someone who keeps rejecting people, aren't you. What are you scheming? No, really?"

Thus Linda told me. What's so weird about treating kidnapping victims gently?
I did tell her that it's only until good bye. But I also said I'd guarantee their safety until then.
And since their kidnappers are no more, my only job now is to wait for the rescuers.

"I've got no ulterior motive. I just think you must be mentally exhausted getting stuck in that place all this time. Scheming? Why'd I do something so bothersome. Didn't you hear me? I just don't want to get involved in your mess."

"You're kind yet you find it bothersome to help other? You really are weird. Well, I'll give up for now. I see you won't be receptive no matter what."

Linda finally declared her withdrawal. Man, she's persistent.
Lady doesn't consider my situation at all.
If only she was the type who gets elated from not having to pay.

The three ladies went in the tent while I keep a watch outside.
They must be tired, they fell into slumber in no time.

(I don't want to think about it but I have a feeling this won't end just like this.)

Revolutionary army? Or so they claimed to be but I just don't agree with their crude methods of kidnapping and threatening. I'm expecting the usual template development.
Time flew by while I was coming up with all possibilities.
And sure enough my premonition came true. Those guys showed up around afternoon tea time.
I've given up trying to escape this mess as it's clear it won't let me no matter what.

Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 100

Threat or Get Threaten

We spent around two days preparing and buying stuff before setting off to the port town 'Randorainamu'.
We'd have gotten there right away if we just flew, but there's the danger of getting seen by people on the way which would be hard to avoid while carrying Alma and Reina.
It was an emergency when we ran from Daijel. There's no urgent need for that right now.

Before we left, I saw an old couple and two small children talking to Reina.
She patted the children with a smile before saying, 'I'm off!' and getting on our wagon.
Apparently those two came from the same bankrupt orphanage as hers. Judging from the gentle expressions on the old couple, I'm sure they'll grow up in a nice environment.

During the journey, the wagon we're taking to the port town is shaking so much my butt is hurting.
I should have bought a cushion... Ah, right, I can just put a mana cushion under.
Mana control is so handy. How's Alma and Reina faring I wonder?
...They're sleeping. Can't believe they can sleep with this much shaking.

Looking at the other passengers around, they all look nonchalant too. Huh? Am I just frail?
I mean who can blame me, I hail from a modern world with all the super comfortable vehicles.. Wonder how's my car doing now. Its battery's probably done for already.

"Lad, you heading for the port town too?"

A plump middle aged man wearing a merchant attire sitting in front of me talked.
I was a bit taken aback by the suddenness.

"Yes, we have a little business to attend there. Well, I won't lie that I'm looking forward to the marine products most though hahaha."

"Ah yup, the seafood there is definitely superb. I get you."

"I suppose that's your goal as well, mister?"

"Half of it. I mainly deal with selling products I stock up at Vinfitt stores. Then I sell stuff from the port town to another town, in short I go around a lot of towns peddling."

"I see. The variety of products sold at Vinfitt is quite bountiful that's for sure."

"Yeah, I might have stocked up a bit much even. Well, just means I'm gonna profit big too."

He laughed as he lightly whacked a huge luggage next to him.
Although there's a limit of goods one man can bring with them, this type of traveling merchants is surprisingly common. The effect they ultimately give to circulation of goods and money is huge.
And this man is one among such merchants.

After a half a day trip including several rest stops, smell of salty air wafted.
Looks like we're nearing the port town already. Sheesh, I'm gonna pass on wagons for a wh--

Kerplunk

My head suddenly took an impact as I was nonchalantly lost in thought.
It doesn't hurt thanks to my HP buffer, but something seems to have shoot through my head.

Ah, there's an arrow sticking on my head.

"U-uwaaaaaaaaa!!?"

The merchant man screamed out loud. Of course he would.
The coachman stopped the wagon in reflex.
Alma and Reina got up from their sleep with that scream.

"W-what's happenin'!? Huh, K-Kajikawa-san's heaaaaaad, it's!!?"

"Can't say, I've been sleeping... H-Hikaru, y-your head...!!"

The two woke up, turned to see me and proceeded to flap their mouth open and shut with pale faces.

"Yup, an arrow flew in and stabbed right to it."

"Eh, are you alright!? That looks fatal, like seriously that should've killed you!"

"Oh, it slipped right off. Yup, there's no blood, I'm fine, no worries."

"How do you expect us not to...!?"

"A-are you a stage magician, lad? Is this one of yer' tricks?"

"No, it seems like somebody shot it outside."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

All the passengers looked at me in blank amazement. But I don't want to stand out.
...Checking my status, that took out around 100 of my HP.
A hit like that should have been fatal yet I've still got plenty of HP left. Guess it's cause I'm not actually wounded for real.

I shuddered at the thought of this arrow hitting somebody other than me, like Alma or Reina then anger welled up.
Who the crap shot this! Unforgivable, I'm gonna stick this arrow on their knee and make them a guard! No wait, what am I even saying...
The thought of Assassin Guild behind this crossed my mind for an instant but apparently that's not it looking at the Map Screen.
Dozens of bandits have surrounded the wagon. These guys must be the culprit.

"Dumbass! Who told ya to shoot the passengers! Aim for the horses, the horses!"

"M-my bad chief, my hands slipped."

"Our goal is money! Not dead man! Argh, dammit. They're gonna send the authority now that somebody's dead, this hunting ground's spoiled."

Hmm, doesn't look like they're the type that kills at least. That first shot was apparently a gaffe.
Turned my head into a scene in a gag manga. Dammit.

"...Well fine. Oy, all of ya lot inside the wagon, hear me! Leave all your belongings and we won't take your life! Refuse and you're as dead as that passenger with an arrow on his head!"

I ain't dead yet! Well normally I would yeah.

"Don't think you can run! We've got this wagon surrounded! We got the road barricaded too, ain't no use running the wagon!"

There's a blockade made of random rocks and logs in the path ahead.
Why'd you even need those archers if you got that! Are you messing just around?!

"Get yer' stuff here if ya got it! Make it quick or--"

BWOSH something grazed the bandit's cheek.

It's the arrow I threw back.
Blood dripped down his cheek.

"!?"

"O-oy! The hell ya think yer' doing! Ya wanna die!"

"Shut the hell upppppp!!!"

My voice was so loud it even took me by surprise.
I tried powering up my throat and lungs with Energy Control and the result was not unlike a large megaphone.
However, my anger at the possibility of Alma and Reina taking the arrow overpowers my shock.

"Uh, w-what the who...!?"

"Oy, who shot that arrow just now!! I'mma beat you to pulp!!"

"H-hiiiie!!?"

Your screams won't make me forgive you, bandits.
I'm gonna beat you up and bring you to the authority! They're all just Lv20 mobs anyway.

"Y-you're mistaken if you think your loud voice's gonna scare us! We got more archers on our side! Surrender or eat a rain of arrows!"

Oh really. And?

I took several baseball-sized rocks out of Item Screen and coat them in mana, energy and life force to remote control them.
Seemingly thanks to my increased Dexterity, I can easily control five rocks without breaking a sweat.
Coated in mana armor, I referenced Map Screen and Mana Search to neutralize the bandit archers with these rocks.

"Gyaaaaaa!? I-it huuuuurts!!"

"M-my aaaarm!?"

"O-our archers they're all...!"

Now then, no more ranged threat.
According to Menu, they've got no Mages.

"Oy, get that trash mountain off the road pronto. I'll let you off with just handing you over to the authority if you don't resist."

"T-to hell with that! We ain't gonna surrender damn easily!"

BOOOM! A boulder broke into pieces next to the protesting bandit leader.
I just launched a mana armor coated rock at high speed, if that hit someone... I don't wanna imagine.

"Did you say something?"

"Oy! Men, get off your asses and dismantle that barricade, our life's on the line!"

The leader loudly and frantically ordered his men.
They were moving in an astonishingly orderly manner to remove the blockade.
Quit playing bandits and work as guards somewhere if you're this coordinated. Don't hafta wait till you get an arrow to the knee.

"Haa, guess that settles it."

I noticed several passengers passed out when I came back to the wagon.
Was the bandit raid that scary. I feel bad for them... No wait, the people still awake have Abnormal Status: 'Terror' (Object: Kajikawa Hikaru) displayed.
Yep, it's due to my roar earlier, thank you... How'd it come to this.

The barricade was gone after awhile and we put the tied up bandits on the luggage cart before resuming the journey.
Everybody was completely silence until we arrived at the town. I felt like I was in a bed of thorns with the occasional frightened glances sent my way.
Even the merchant who was talking to me earlier wouldn't turn to see me. No more of this.
Flying is really the best form of transportation between towns...

371 Delineation

Two ladies with a refreshed look on their faces walked up to thank me.

I stopped them as they were about to introduce themselves while looking apologetic.

The matter with toilet must have been serious, their expressions have turned gentle.
The fact that they didn't thank me earlier probably weighed on them. So now they're trying to introduce themselves.
But now that I've grasped the situation, I don't really mind it. They were at their limit then a suspicious man came to their rescue. They couldn't help doubting me when their mental state was in disarray.
They seem relieved now that they got over the crisis without crossing the line. With the mental pressure gone, they're back to their normal personality. Which makes them regret their earlier attitude.
There was no such smell in the cave. I understand that these two were under extreme stress. Therefore, I'm not holding it against them.

"Hold it! I don't need your names. Once the cavalry is here to pick you up, that's it for us. Forget everything about me cause our paths will never cross again. Please keep that in mind."

I made that request while processing a game I hunted.
It's an animal Raine called Rabbikk. Though to me they're pretty much rabbit.
Linda spoke to me as I stripped the pelt, took out the innards, washed the sliced up meat and boiled them in the pot.

"I have no clue at all what you're thinking. When did you even get that? Hey? Can you tell me why are you so adamant on cutting yourself off us? My pride as a noble won't allow your refusal to accept my reward, what is your reason anyway? Can you tell me?"

What a pain nobles are. Linda is probably trying to avoid getting a rumor spread about her not rewarding the person who saved her.
Also, I hunted the rabbikk when Linda was in the cave. Using Acceleration.
We don't know when that underling is coming back with their rescuers, so I might as well secure our food.
If he gets back here promptly, that's fine. If he never comes back, we've got food at least. What's bad is if he returns during an awkward timing, might as well eat while you can.
It's still before noon right now. I have no more foodstuff in my magic bag. Which worried me a bit hence I prioritized food first.

There's no way the ladies have an insight on my thinking however, so their impression of me must have gone from 'suspicious fella' to 'incorrigible fella'.

Thus, I tell it like it is.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"I don't want to get dragged into the absolute mess going on in the federation. I haven't even stepped foot in there yet. That's all there is to it. Also, there's no telling what's gonna happen if you get involved with me. Oh and since I've ended up saving you ladies, I'll at least guarantee your safety until then. Just know that's the end of the line with me."

Linda was still acting pushy as I proceeded with the second rabbikk.

"Absolute mess huh, well you're not exactly wrong. We don't know what's in store in the future. They may even made another attempt for us you know? But what's with that, 'if you get involved with me'? That's just weird. And rude, don't you think? I know that you've saved us and all, but your manner of speaking is impudent."

Linda kept talking on her high horse. Which gradually chipped on my patience.
But I opted to use it against her and cut her off instead.

"Yeah that's for sure, of course our great noble lady has no obligation to even thank such an impudent man. That's fine. No thanks necessary. Me saving you lot is a coincidence. It's a good bye once your rescue is here. You ladies get back to your home. End of. Good enough?"

Linda finally shut up with a frown on her face.

Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 99

One Fresh Thing After Another

The day after our audience with the city lord, we went to the guild and applied for Reina's registration through the receptionist.
Now that Reina's back in form, she can finally register her membership with the guild and our party.

"Reina-san will be registered as a new member of party 'Tomorrow of Hope', is that all right?"

"Yes ma'am!"

...Oh right, almost forgot that was our party's name. I was the one who came up with it too. Stupid me.

"Understood... To be honest, I wasn't sure how you would fare when you were calling out to adventurer parties in front of the guild wearing nothing but a ragged clothing back then. But I see that there is nothing to worry about anymore now."

"Ahaha... I'm sorry for such a shameful sight. I apologize for the trouble I caused."

"Oh please don't worry about it. It was no trouble at all."

The receptionist lady is chatting with Reina with warm looks in her eyes.
She looks like a cool beauty at a glance but she's actually really kind when you get to know her.

"Your registration as an adventurer and a member of an adventurer party is now finished. Now that your party has three or more people, you are required to decide on a party leader. They will be the guarantor."

Eh, first I heard that though.

"It's a mechanism to prevent a party from putting all responsibility to a member while the rest shirk theirs when one of theirs causes trouble. We had such many cases during early days of our guild, resulting in delays to the resolutions."

"So this guarantor is to smooth things out during such cases."

"Yes. However as a prevention of forcing the member with the lowest standing be the leader, the general rule is to appoint the highest leveled person as the leader."

"Nn, both Alma and me are level 24, so it'll be either of us."

As I was thinking that, Menu Screen popped up all of a sudden. Eh, what?

<<Kajikawa Hikaru base level has increased to 25 last night during his sleep.>>

...Wha? How come?

<<Demon Murugabuio took its own life last night, thus being the one who inflicted damage and status abnormality to the demon, Kajikawa Hikaru obtained the experience points.>>

...Was he that cornered he resorted to that. I kinda feel guilty.
Eh, so you're telling me I've gotta be the leader now? Alma has more experience as an adventurer. No well, I'm not planning to push her into taking the role though.

"Ah, sorry. Looks like I'm level 25."

"Come again? ...Indeed. That means, Kajikawa-san will be the leader, is that satisfactory?"

Did she just appraise me.
Hmm, I'm not really eager to be one, but not following the rule seems like it's gonna be an issue.

"Err, I don't mind turning over the role if you two object."

"Hikaru is fine."

"No complain for me with Kajikawa-san being our leader."

"...Well that's that I guess."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

Well, thinking again, I'm the most prone person to cause trouble anyway.
I mean I did punch that pig noble which brought us here.
In a way, making the party's biggest troublemaker into the leader is the right decision. The two of them won't be stuck taking responsibility.
...No wait, I should make an effort toward avoiding making a mess if I'm aware of that.

We filled some forms under the receptionist lady's guidance and finally finished all the procedures.

"With this you're done with all the registrations. Well done."

"Thank you."

"Ah, right. Master has left Alma-san's reward with me, would you like to receive it now?"

"Eh? Ah, okay."

Lolimast sure gets the job done quickly.
She said we won't be disappointed, but now I'm worried when it's ready this fast.
It's wrapped in a thick cloth, wonder how it looks.

Unwrapping and drawing the sword from its sheath revealed a shakudo-colored double-edged sword glittering under the light.
<TLN: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakud%C5%8D >
Unlike the red from rust, this one has a beautiful luster to it. It doesn't seem to be painted, the material of the sword itself must be red.
The looks alone scream it's an exceedingly goood sword. Let's check out its specs.

Lv1 Ogre Eater Shark Fang Sword
ATK+250 INT+100

Effect: Self-Repair

<<A sword made from the fang of a unique shark type magic beast known as Ogre Eater. It has high innate magic power as well as excellent sturdiness. In addition, this sword 'Evolves' depending on the amount and quality of magic beasts it has defeated. It can also repair itself over time, however this is not possible if the blade has been broken.>>

Buhho!? It's an even more incredible than I thought! Lolimast's really going for the bat, thanks.
Thing even raises INT by 100, there's no need to dual wield a sword and staff anymore. Staff no more...
Wait what, 'Evolves'? I though it was weird how it got a level next to its name. That related?

<<Equipment made with material acquired from Unique Monsters who evolve unlike common evolution sometimes turn into gears that evolve. Its form, attributes and in some cases even the material itself may change with evolution.>>

An evolving gear huh. What a peculiar sword.
I love this kind of weapons. Heck, I want it but I can't even joke about that with how sparkly Alma's eyes have turned. Okay okay, this is yours.
I want my own unique gear too one day. Currently, bare handed with mana control is my strongest arsenal, it won't cut it unless it's at this level of gear.

"What a pretty red sword. I believe it was made with a Unique Monster's material. I'm sure it'll be a great help to you."

"It looks soo strong. And it's red."

"I feel like I've used this sword longer than my previous one already. And it's red."

No no, the redness got nothing to do with it. What's with that logic.

"Err, do you know a magic beast territory nearby that's appropriate for low level adventurers? We'd like to raise Reina's level."

"Yes let's see, ordinarily we would have recommended the magic beast forest near Daijel town, but as the number of beasts there has dwindled due to a recent Stampede, the Monster Prairie near 'Randorainam' Port Town in the opposite direction would be better."

Monster Prairie. That sounds peaceful unlike other magic beast territories thus far.
The word 'Monster' destroys that image though...

"Powerful magic beasts lurk deeper into Monster Prairie however, the outer areas only have weak Lv 1-5 magic beasts, hence it's a relatively safe spot to raise level."

"I see. How high the levels go when you get deeper?"

"We have reports on magic beasts over level 50 there. I do not believe it's wise for your present party to challenge that area, so please do make sure you do not head too deep."

"You're exactly right. Thank you for everything."

"Please don't mention it. Soarer-san."

...I see, she must have been informed of the circumstances being our handler and all. Walls have ears though, wish she could refrain uttering that name.
Now then, guess it's a go time for the port town. Sounds like there's gonna be plenty of fresh marine products around, can't wait.

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 370

370 Source of Smell

It's a collar used by the children kidnappers back then. One of many I had inside my bag.
Smashing them one by one was a bother so I left them alone thinking it'd come in handy one day.
This is the only use of them though. It got put on Underling's neck.
Not by me. Linda did. He should now listen to her as the person who put the collar on.
I don't wanna own this stuffy man. This way, Linda is gonna be the one stuck to dispose of him once he's outlived his usefulness.

"And now you gotta listen to her every command. First, let's see, right, tell some government official about this place and the kidnapped victims. Ask them to fetch these ladies here."

"Hey? Won't that require proof that we're here? Let me see, yep bring this ribbon with you. Go to the House of Lolengus's estate, my home. That ribbon alone is probably not enough to get them believe you. So say this password, 'I want a birthday flower from the one in that tale'. I'm sure father would get it."

I was a bit surprised by this. This young lady could think pretty far ahead. I thought telling some government official would be enough.
But that'd take too much time. Better off sending a messenger directly to her house.
Especially with Linda being a daughter of the chairman.
These guys should know her house having planned her kidnapping.

(Ah, still, corrupt politician huh? Kidnapping the chairman's daughter at that... A classic in revolution stories. But nothing is that simple. They'd likely fail even without my involvement. And besides, there's probably more to this stuff.)

I'd be spared of this all dodgy mess if I could just get away, but when's the right time to?

Underling went back to the forest. I should have asked how long until our rescue come but he's already gone.

"How about you take those two ladies outside? Staying inside that cave must have been suffocating. I'll take care of these bodies in the meantime. Also, how do you wanna do your business? I've got a portable toilet for adventurers with me, wanna use one if you can't hold it?"

This may sound like I lack delicacy, but that's not it. Holding it in stresses you out like nothing else. Even a short term is bad. It must be mentally exhausting.
Hence I said it out loud to free her of the suffering.

Linda glared hard at me, but her body couldn't lie as she trembled.
Looks like she's really been holding it, and me mentioning that made her conscious again.

I immediately set up the portable toilet and a screen.
Linda kept staring at me as I did before immediately rushing in once I was done.

"I'll strip these guys' belongings in the meantime. Go get those two inside the cave once you're done."

Portable toilets are a handy little stuff. They even have deodorant to erase the smell. It's some sort of sand like you see for cat litter boxes and it's surprisingly effective.
They won't have to worry about that point. I spoke to Linda how to use the sand while taking valuables from the bodies.

(There absolutely must be someone with their previous life's memory or at least knowledge here in this world... People in this world would never come up with this stuff.)

What's more curious is the tech behind this smell erasing sand. I ponder while digging holes for the bodies with Acceleration.
I came to a conclusion when I was done.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
(With miraculous stuff like magic around, it must be related. Yup, there's no way I can understand the mechanic with my knowledge. I'm just gonna lump up everything I don't get as 'magic' from now on.)

I'm just gonna pigeonhole anything I don't understand as 'magic'. Gotta stop overthinking stuff beyond me.
I undid Acceleration to throw the bodies inside the holes and entered Acceleration again to bury the holes.

I was done with everything by the time Linda came out with a refreshed face.

"...Where did that pile of bodies go? I can still smell blood... Just what did you do? Who are you really..."

"Who cares about that. What's important is the fact that I'm not your enemy. Come fetch those two now. They must be at their limit seeing you earlier. They might fall ill if it keeps on for too long."

"...Thank you. You're a great help. I don't know who and where you come from, but I'll be sure to reward you properly."

"I don't need it. Forget about me. Don't get involved with me. I'm going out to hunt now. I'll set up a tent for you ladies. Get some rest inside. You can teach them how to use the toilet."

"You're such a weird man... Well I guess that's fine. But let me reward you at least. I'm still technically a noble. We have our pride to uphold, just you know."

Linda went in the cave after saying that. I set up our camp as I made a sidelong glance.
Once done, I activated Acceleration to go hunting.

(Now then, I still lack information on the situation inside the federation. One thing for sure is that I've gotten myself involved in this mess. But if I run now I can avoid making further bonds with these ladies... what do?)

So far, I haven't made a fatal 'slip-up' yet. Therefore, I believe I can avoid this event if I just stay away from the federation.

Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 98

Stalkers Maybe?

Now that we said all that needed to be said, we excused ourselves from the discussion.
Or rather, they pretty much drove us out of the room because 'They have to talk about matters commoners shouldn't be privy of'. Kinda glad cause we wanted to go home, but also kinda feel bad.

"We have to check on Reina back at the inn."

"Well, her symptoms aren't that bad, she should be fine after a day rest. But yeah let's make sure she's been drinking enough water. "

"Nn, let's."

"By the way, have you noticed?"

"...Un, there's two of them."

"Let's split up here. We don't know who they're going for, so let's shoot a magic as a signal if either of us needs help."

"Got it."

Each of us went in the opposite directions.
Now then, which one will they go to.

...Yup, it's me as expected.
There are presences that have been tailing us since we left the city lord mansion.
I can't see them likely due to Stealth Skills, however they can't escape Mana Search.
This Stealth Skill probably allows its user to hide away from five senses, but it doesn't seem to work on Mana Search which is more akin to extrasensory.
So we split up to see which one was their target, turned out it was me (Soarer).

I flew up to the roof of building right as I entered an alleyway in their blind spot.
I then flew at high speed while being careful not to enter my pursuers and floated high behind them.
Getting them off my back is simple, but I gotta know who they are and what's their goal.
...Both of them have Assassin as their Jobs huh. No wait, one is a High Assassin, an Advanced Job.
I can't really tell their appearances likely due to Stealth Skill, but one is a Lv 20 man, and the other is a Lv 28 woman.
Guessing they're working as a two-man team, a mentor and an apprentice kind.

"...Dammit, we lost him!"

"It was a cinch up until he raised his pace and went in that alleyway."

"You mean he noticed us?"

"Most likely. I can't believe he managed to detect our presences. Guildmaster is right, he's no ordinary man... This mission is a failure."

Assassin and guildmaster, with those two keywords, that Julia woman probably sent them.
She must have ordered them to tail me once I left the mansion. They won't antagonize me yet they're gonna keep a tab on me.

"Well she did mention that 'It's probably out of your league', I don't believe she'll punish us. A silver lining if you may."

"Fool, you get better rep completing high difficulty missions like this... Well, I do admit that our target this time is quite an irregular being."

Irregular being. What are they treating me as.
...Guess flying makes me an odd man already.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

"Should we leave that black haired girl alone?"

"We have confirmed that the other one is an officially registered member of Adventurer Guild. She has an unusual Job, but there's no urgent need to monitor her... Or rather, we don't wanna poke the snakes in the bush."

"Eh? What's the issue?"

"Her parents are the issue. Our investigation reveals that she's a daughter of Sword King Dukeris and Arch Mage Lunatiara."

"E,eeh!? A daughter of those legendary heroic duo!?"

"Yeah. If those two find out that we have been monitoring their daughter, our guild might get smashed to smithereens."

Physically speaking yeah.
Heck, I've heard stories of some dumb noble trying to kidnap Alma Mama getting his mansion razed to the ground. Them destroying a guild isn't at all out there.

"Hence the decision to omit that girl as an object of observation, is it."

"You got it. The same reason we won't resort to force trying to get that 'Ninja' girl join us."

"I guess she's gonna join her party. What a shame, it's such a rare and useful Skill too."

"Yeah. Let's cut the chit-chat and return to the guild... Sheesh, those guys are gonna tease me failing a mission after so long."

The two went off somewhere afterward. Good work.

Hm, it's good that I shook them off, but it doesn't feel too nice.
I can fly so it's virtually impossible for them to catch me. Hence they've anticipated the failure, I think this is all just a formality.
I'm not mad from this though. It leaves them a bad impression on me but it's true that Soarer is someone you can't just leave to his own device.

The problem is the reason they don't monitor Alma.
It's nice and all but it also makes it look like she's riding on her parents' coat-tails.
Alma herself has absolutely no intention of capitalizing that. Yet just being their daughter brings about these effects.
...I'm sure I won't feel this hazy feeling anymore once we've gotten strong enough to dispel that notion.
Leveling Reina is important but that doesn't mean Alma and I can lag behind on our training.

I took off my mask and changed my clothes before joining Alma.
I told her, 'They were members of assassin guild, I got away just fine. Their goal was observing Soarer, nothing on you or Reina', she seemed relieved and replied, 'Really'.
Afterward, we bought vegetable and fruit that seemed good for hangovers and went back to our inn.
Inside Reina's room, she had recovered enough to get up her bed despite looking languid.

"We're back... How're you holding up?"

"My head still hurts a bit, but I feel so much better after sipping the soup..."

"Just get some rest today. There's no hurry registering at the guild."

"Let'ss. I feel like it's gonna relapse if I walk around..."

"I'll make you vegetable and fruit juice later. Make sure to drink it up."

"Thanksies."

Once she's recovered and registered at the guild as our party member, we should focus on getting her take on weak magic beasts to level her up.
Taking the guild course would build her foundation as an adventurer, but we have no luxury of time with all the demon problems.
Well, she should do just fine with us guiding her, just like Alma did to me. Hopefully.
But you know, magic beast cave's lowest leveled magic beasts are at 10, yet we still can't go to magic beast forest due to Stampede effect. Also, it's too early to go back to Daijel anyway. That pig noble might find us.
I'm told there's no other hunting spots besides that cave near this city. It looks like we're gonna have to travel far again.
I'd have loved to tour around this big city still, yet leveling Reina is our top priority right now.
Once we get our reward from lolimast, we gotta look for another town with a good leveling spot nearby.
...Ah, moving is such a pain.
