Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 186

Workplace Negotiation

"You dumbarse! The crap with this rough whet! Your half-baked whetting's gonna cost us days!"

"Ah shaddup! The balance just got a bit out of whack, I just gotta readjust it a tad!"

"That's cause yer' doing a poor work... Hm? Ain'tcha Kajikawa. What's the occasion?"

Hello, so we've gone all the way to Gen's Workshop early in the morning to ask them if they're willing to lend Julian their workplace.
And they were fighting when we got here. Gedagan-san was having a yelling contest with Higuroima-san whetting a sword.
...Quarreling must be an everyday thing with these master-disciple. Wonder if their neighbors complained.

Gen-san stopped their quarrel when he saw us, but then he frowned when he noticed Julian behind me.
...Looks like he's familiar with Julian.

"Good morning. You two are so lively this early in the morning."

"Drop it, sounds like a sarcasm to me. Forget that, ain't the guy behind you the same guy who's been making weird weapons at the town's outskirts. Got a business with me?"

"Hello, my name is Julian. I am pleased to make your acquaintance."

J-Julian greeted someone properly...!?
No wait, thinking back, this guy usually acted surprisingly normal when it came to everything but me and my weapon. Could it be that his usual high tension behavior really was due to him getting overly excited and this is his normal state...?

"Do you have a moment to spare? I'd like to discuss something related to this man."

"...Speak. Got a feeling this is gonna be a pain in the arse."

I talked to them about the attack on Julian's workshop, the necessity to stay hidden and asked Gen-san a spot in his workshop for Julian to work on my weapon.
Both Gen-san and Higuro-san had a sour look when I touched the subject about renting their workplace... Well, I guess their reaction is only natural.

"Sorry, this workshop ain't no place to play around and make toys. Go somewhere else."

"I understand we're asking for the impossible. Especially since you two have just met, of course you will be hesitant."

"Give it up if you get it. I'm no stranger to unreasonable custom orders, but getting asked to let an outsider in my workplace is a new one..."

"And isn't that guy an oddball who can only make weird weapons? Blacksmithing ain't so easy a former noble can take up!"

"Right. By the way, this is a sample of swords Julian has created, does this look like a toy to you Gen-san?"

"Listen to me! Heck, why'd you take out a sword here!?"

I ignored the furious Higuro-san who was dissing Julian and showed Gen-san a 'proper sword' Julian made.
Despite Julian's penchant for odd weapons, his weapon-making skill itself isn't half bad. In fact, it's quite high up there.
Gen-san seemed to infer Julian's ability after he fixedly stared the sword and spoke.

"Hwo. Julian, was it. So you forged this sword, what kinda person you imagined wield it?"

"Yes. I made it for a man with a Strength value higher than 180, and around later half of 170 cm tall. I would like to hear your opinions on it if you see an issue, would you give me pointers?"

"...No issue, this is good stuff. Anybody can make weapons at random, it might as well be casting. There ain't no point striking yer hammer without taking its wielder into account."

As Gen-san returned the sword, he grabbed Julian's palm and stared at it.
Despite being restored by Lifeforce Transfer, Julian's palms retained its roughness from all the time he smithed.
...Has he been smithing so much it's been carved on his gene? Scary.

"...How many weapons have you made? 100, or 200 ain't cutting it considering these palms."

"I beg your pardon, I have forgotten how many there are. It has been 12 years since I took up smithing."

"Oy oy, checking yer Stat, you ain't even a blacksmith, yer a Magic Tool Engineer!? How come yer Magic Tool Creation Skill and Blacksmith Skill are both at Lv6!? Kah, ya mean you got here in just 12 years...?"

"Lv6!? Y-you're a better blacksmith than me...?"

The two eccentric master-disciple were shocked to hear Appraisal result on Julian. Wait what, this guy's not even a Blacksmith? I didn't look at his Job when I was checking his Skill List.
Higuro-san especially, must be a huge shock when he lost to someone who doesn't have it as his main Job. Don't mind. Live on.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

"I have been doing nothing but striking metal and engraving magic formulas day and night in order to create my ideal weapons. My level of Blacksmith Skill increases slower than Magic Tool Creation Skill so my time is chiefly spent on hitting metal, however."

"Why didn't you choose Blacksmith as your Job then? At your pace, you'd have reached my level by now."

"That is because the weapons I wish to create are more akin to magic tools if anything."

"Fumu, are these weapons you speak of the same ones showcased on your storefront?"

"Yes. Although most of those are failures nobody can wield. It is as you said, I made those without thinking about what the wielder is like, they are worthless."

"Most, are you saying there's a usable one?"

"One, yes. He is the only one who can wield it."

Julian turned to look at me. Quit staring here.
...He looked like he was expecting me to do something, so I took the explosomething out of my bag.

"This is a prototype. The head part is bent due to overuse, but it's still usable."

"...I see there's an engine that produces explosions using magic stones inside that hammer head, ya really can use that thing? The wielder's gonna get swung around instead no matter how you look at it."

"Oh yes, it's actually very effective in practice. This is the magic beast this weapon helped defeat."

I took an ogre corpse out of Item Screen while explaining... Ah, not this one.

"My bad, that was a mistake. It's this one here. Yes."

"No wait, what's up with that crushed head!?"

"That has nothing to do with the weapon, please pay it no attention. The hammer made a clean hit on this ogre and it certainly did some damage."

"A steel hammer managed to damage an ogre huh. If it had been made with an even better material, its strength would be at artillery-class."

"And in order to complete that weapon, I need a workplace! Please I beg of you, allow me to borrow yours at least until it is done to completion! I will not get in your way, you may make me do anything, even chores!"

Hm? Did he say the classic do anything line, ah okay, yes, this isn't the time for that.
Julian acted unlike his usual self as he entreated with a lowered head. Yup, I shouldn't joke around here. Sorry really.

"...Our rent ain't gonna come cheap. Do as you like if you agree to it."

"D-does that mean...!"

"Yea. I'll let you take shelter here. But I'mma kick you out if you get in the way, keep that in mind."

"T-thank you so much!"

...Alright, got the permission at least.
Next up, is to discuss rent fee, I've an idea.

"About the fee, would this ogre suffice as the payment?"

"Uwa! Isn't this the crushed head from earlier!?"

"...Ogre materials can fetch for hundreds thousands ya know? Ya sure ya wanna just give it away?"

"Just goes to show how big my expectation on Julian's weapon. Oy, I've done all this, make sure you finish it."

"...Yeah! Just leave it to me, my customer!"

"...How'd you kill this ogre? Did you break its head with that hammer? Steel ain't supposed to break ogre's skull though."

"Oh no, I countered this ogre's headbutt with my own, and then blech."

"No no no, you're lying! There's no way your head's come out okay if you did that!"

"...No, seems he's saying the truth. Hard to believe, but the Log shows this ogre's dead by a headbutt... Ain't your head more powerful than this hammer?"

"S-seriously? What's your head made of anyway..."

Please don't look at me like I'm a monster. It hurts~.
I only succeeded by using up all my mana and energy, the mileage is just way too bad.
That's why I want a strong weapon. And why I went all this trouble.

Julian's problem is solved for now.
Next up is conquering the dungeon for mats.
...This is turning into quite the grind. I'm getting depressed.

453 Reversal

The old man raised his greatshield high up and swung it down at me once again.

"Haa... I'm done. Let's get this over with."

I stared at the incoming greatshield. It gradually slowed down until eventually stopping altogether just before it hit my face. I've entered Accelerated State.

(Welp! One light punch coming right up. Heave-ho!)

I threw a backfist. Hitting the center of the greatshield.
The old man is far bigger than me so the vector of my strike naturally slanted upward.

(Ah man. He's gonna fly.)

As predicted, once I undid Acceleration, there was a gong-like sound before the old man flew three meter high into the air.
The total distance he traveled was only around ten meters or so, not really that far. Several people got hit at the crash spot.
But this was more than enough. Kanedor's soldiers all ran away at full speed.

"Ain't no way! Regud the Absolute Crag got done in! Eff this, I'm outta here!"
"Dangit! What in the hell! Is that guy! Nobody got enough lives to deal with him!"
"Damn! And this was supposed to be an easy job!?"
"How in the hell!? That guy was huge and got all those heavy equipment on him?! How! How the heck did he freaking fly!"
"I ain't fighting that monster!"
"I still wanna live! I still wanna live! Men, let's scram!"
"Who cares bout money if you're dead! I'm hauling my ass outta here!"
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"You curs, cease this at once! I order you! I paid you lot! Listen to your employer!!"

The hired hands scattered in all directions. Kanedor kept yelling at them to no effect.
At the end of the day, they're only here for the money, none of them would willingly rush to a certain death.
The allure of cash diminishes when it's a question of dead or alive.

Kanedor was left with around 150 soldiers.
There are some soldiers I crushed lying on the ground groaning all around them, but none of them looks like they're getting up.

Thus, the situation has been reversed in a flash.
Those remaining soldiers must be from Kanedor's own army. But every single one of them is looking frail and lacking combat experience. They're shaking and not even properly holding their spears upright.
Opposite to them, Lolengus's soldiers consist of macho men with firm postures and upright spears. Their formation looks rock solid.

By this point Kanedor only got half of Lolengus's soldiers. The sheer gap in quality is clear too.
Lolengus's side got this battle in the bag. Nothing would upend it.
Besides one lone man who can't accept reality nor surrender.

"What a disgrace! How dare you disrespect me! Oy! You looot! Quit dawdling! Go and fetch his head for me!"

He might have gone mad already. Guy got bloodshot eyes and foaming at the mouth as he kept ordering his soldiers around.
An order that practically tells them to go to their doom. Dying a dog's death in a meaningless battle with no hope of victory.
Why would anyone willingly throw their life away? None of Kanedor's soldier even made the attempt to step forward.

"Hey? Sir Lolengus. Can I shut him up now? Capital punishment is in order right?"

This event is over already. No point in letting it run its course. Hence I urged the chairman to make his decision.

"U, umu. R-right you are. You may carry out his punishment once I have made the declaration."

Thus, Chairman Lolengus cleared his throat before enumerating all the charges against Kanedor.

No Laughing Now

"...What are you doing?"

"Ah, welcome back."

Alma asked with judging eyes the moment she entered Julian's Workshop.
I think it's pretty obvious, I'm grilling meat. I've got sauce too.
I'm impressed she could tell I flew here and she doesn't even have Map Screen. Ah right, Mana Sensing.

"No, not welcome back! You have no idea how surprised we were when you zoomed away like that only to find you here grilling meat!"

"Weren't you asking for meat for dinner, Reina. I thought grilled meat would be nice."

"Yes I did! I mean no, that's not it, why'd you fly off all of a sudden like that!? You left us behind without an explanation!"

"My bad, I didn't have time to explain cause it was an emergency."

"Emergency? What happened?"

"Well you see--"

"Umu, this peculiar flavor is good and all, but I would love to have a bite on other cuts as well..."

While I was apologizing to Alma and Reina, Julian interrupted while chewing on grilled liver, not reading the room, no, he did despite reading the room.
He regained a bit of blood thanks to Lifeforce Transfer, but his State was still anemic so I made him eat a lot of livers, rich in iron content, and spina (spinach-like), but I guess it got too much for him.

"You've still got plenty of blood to refill seeing as you got your arms cut and all. Bear with it, just keep working on those livers. Don't just sprinkle salt and pepper and try the sauce too if you're tired of the taste."

"...His arms, eh? What, did you?"

"This sauce here? It's wafting an odd fragrant, is this truly safe...? Mu, muoo!? What a fresh flavor! This mixture of garic (garlic-like), soyso and some sort of stimulating punch transformed the liver's foul smell into that of umami!"

"That's grated forest ginger. There's also mirin from boiled sake, no, sweet sauce mixed... I mean, man you're a gourmet reporter alright."

"No no, you two don't just have a carefree chat all by yourselves and leave us hanging here! What do you mean by cut arms!?"

Reina protested as I replied halfheartedly to Julian overreacting to his meal.
Guess I should stop joking around and explain the situation over dinner.

The two put on inexplicable expressions on their faces afterward.
I think they're not sure if they should be angry at the assailants cutting off Julian's arms, or surprised at me easily restoring them or sympathizing at the fact that Julian's little brother sent the assassins.

"...I'm having an overload of information, I'm not sure how to react."

"What did you do to those two hired assassins?"

"They're over there lying on the ground. The guards will come over to take them away in a bit, so I just tossed 'em aside."

"...Weird faces."

"For sure. What's the deal with those eyebrows and beards anyway."

"No no, those are definitely scribbled on! And you definitely did it, Kajikawa-san!"

There wasn't a particular 'talk' happening besides me knocking them out after they spilled the beans so I made do by scribbling on their faces with oil-based paint.
The guards might find it baffling. That's fine though.

"They're gonna hold a grudge when they wake up..."

"What do you mean when, they're wide awake, look."

"Those eyes are just scribbled on the eyelids, pfft! Ku, kuku...!"
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

Dedeen. Reina, out~.
She tried to hold it in but failed when she saw the scribbled eyes.
There's no punching and kicking involved though. She doesn't know the reference after all.

"Now then, this crisis may have been averted, but my kid brother will surely send more assassins if he finds out about my survival."

"And so we were having a discussion about it over the meat grilling session, but we'd like to hear your opinions on the matter too."

"Opinions?"

"To ensure Julian's safety, we think it's better to close the store and have him go missing publicly, while he works on my weapon in another workshop."

"Umu. I'm also thinking of formally sending a notice to my household on the news of my death. Officials will surely be understanding if it's for the sake of my safety. After all we took down assassins hired by a noble, this would be preferable than filing a complaint to that noble."

"...I think that is for the best if you are fine with that, Julian."

"Are you sure about that, Julian-san? Aren't you mad about your arms...?"

"I was, but since they were back as new when I came to my sense, I am not particularly fussed. Still, to think you can not only manipulate mana but even life force... Putting me aside, are you truly all right?"

Julian asked me worryingly while looking apologetic.
Apparently this would reduce their life span if a human did it, but there's no issue with me since my HP acts as a buffer.

"No worries. My specs are just all sorts of off base, you know from Appraisal, no?"

"I see, I am forever grateful... Speaking of which, have you an idea as to whose workshop should I work your weapon at? Regretfully, I have practically zero relationship with other craftsmen..."

"Ah, I never had an expectation on that point, no biggies."

"Well aren't you harsh!"

"Ain't that the truth though. Well, I can't say it'll definitely work out, but I do have one place in mind. Gonna have to talk it out with them first."

Now then, it all depends on whether they're willing to strike a deal or not.
Our cards will be Julian as a weapon artisan, and that thing. Urp.

Oh, a group of two, three people are heading this way. Wonder who?

"Pardon us, thank you for waiting. Is this the workshop that came under attack?"

Ah, it's the guards. Thanks for your hard work.

"Yes. It's these two with intense eyes and terrific beards here."

"Bufoo!"

"I-Is that right. T-then we will take them away... Pukuku...!"

Dedeen. All of them, out~.
The guards burst into laughter when they saw the assassins' scribbled faces.
Guess you would when you thought you'd take away criminals only to find these faces.

"So which workshop do you have in mind?"

"Gen-san's. I don't think any other workshops are gonna be willing to take in Julian, and that place is always noisy anyway, adding one or two people won't make a difference."

I'm just worried if he'd get mixed up between those two's master-discipline's quarrel, but well I'm sure it'll work out.
Well, now that's been decided let's pay them a visit tomorrow... Hope they're not fighting when we get there.

452 Important Discovery

"Who in the world are you? How'd ya manage to stop that. Hmph! Whatever. That was just a warm-up! I'm gonna go all out now!"

He must have full confidence on his strength. Looks like he's implying me stopping him was just a fluke.
What this man did next was to raise his greatshield high up and swung it down.
He put everything behind that swing, that on top of the shield's massive weight.

This old man is wearing quite a bulky armor too. His fighting style must utilize both that and the greatshield.
He's got no mace, or a sword on his waist. There's a small knife but that's it.
He's only been using his greatshield to attack me all this time. Both offensively and defensively, quite an unusual style.

But there's no way such a slow attack would hit me. Even outside Acceleration. Easy.
I didn't learn all kind of martial arts in my previous life for nothing. I swiftly got away from the attack range.
A minor tremor was generated along with a small crater as the attack hit the ground like a giant falling iron ball.

"Who scary! Good thing I dodged that. Woulda sunk in the ground if I ate that head-on..."

Of course my body will be absolutely fine even if that hit. But not the ground.
My feet would have definitely sunk in if I took that.
Getting dirt inside your shoes is the worst feeling. I praised myself for choosing to dodge if only for that.
But the old man took my reaction wrong and spoke haughtily.

"Hmph! Nothing in this world can survive my great attack! Prostrate yourself before me and I might just let you off yeah? Turn around with your tail tucked between your legs. I'll look the other way. Now bow before the great me if you don't want to become a tragic corpse."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
I'm amazed by his pompous attitude. This old man must be another Epithet Holder mercenary.
He's acting way too careless despite witnessing another holder beaten just now. Do all mercenaries not measure the gap in strength between themselves and the enemies before them?
I've only come across two types of these holders, one who went all out right off the bat, and another who keeps trying to flaunt their strength like this.
Yet, that's enough to form a prejudice about mercenaries in me.

(Well, and the fact that these people are willing to work under Kanedor.)

They must be motivated by money.
And that's fine as mercenaries, but I dunno about that humanely speaking.
They don't feel danger because they're selling their life for money. With half-baked strength to back it up. 'I'm strong, there's no way I'll die'.
Had he been more careful, he would have raised his alert level to maximum after seeing me stop his first attack.
Being able to weight between your life and money should have been an important quality in this line of work.
No, that applies to any job. You can't get revived with money. This is not a game.
Once you're dead your money is worthless to you. No coming back to life. That's reality.

(...No wait, could it be that you can!? I mean magic exists here, resurrection magic might too, no?)

And now I found one thing that bugs me after all this time. I gotta find out about this matter somewhere.
If it turned out to be a fairy tale, then that's the end of the matter. But if the magic exists for real, it can't come cheap.

In all my short journey thus far, my ears never picked up the word resurrection once.
But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The word 'insurance' floated in my mind.

(Guess I could ask Sir Lolengus about it later.)

I almost got stabbed by that Swift Flash guy. Which means there's no guarantee I won't die in the future.
I'd like to have a means to be revived if that ever happens. To finally start worrying about my safety now after all this time, I really was drunk on my power.
I can get sick or wounded too. This world doesn't seem to have insurance company, but doctors exist. I'm not too confident about the quality of medical care in this fantasy world.
Gotta start researching about healing magic and healing potions. How bad a wound can they cure? What's the after-effect?
I'm in a fantasy world and all. Would be nice if there's really a means of resurrection.
And I'd like to have one. So yeah, I'm finally losing my nerve.

An angry voice interrupted my thought on this important discovery.

"You! How dare you keep muttering who knows crap and ignore me! I see you got a death wish! I'll grant you just that, now get crushed!"

Side Story Not Alright, It's Problematic

This is from the hero's perspective.

I let myself relax on the swaying ship as it's making its way to our destination.
I'm usually busy running around hunting magic beasts or doing guild commissions ever since I reincarnated in this world. It's been forever since I can take it easy like this.
We're supposed to arrive at noon today, time to kick back until then.

"U, uu... O-Olivie, one more, Detoxification please..."

"Y-yes... I wonder if my mana will last..."

A red braid haired spear girl, Leviara groaned with a pale face. Looks like she's the type that easily gets carsick.
Next to her is our new member, a long silver haired Sage girl, Olivier casting magic to cure Status Abnormality.
Every time the ship swayed, they swing, no, they oscillate. Wonderful...!

"Neora...! You're, staring at, Olivie's chest, again, urp...!"

"L-Levia-san, please calm down."

"No, this guy may look cute outwardly but he's an unbelievable pervert inside, you have to draw the line or he'd never stop..."

"Who're you calling a pervert. Just stay put while she cures you."

"You can use healing magic, can't you! Don't make Olivie do all the work and use your magic too!"

"How are you so haughty while asking for help..."

I'm seeing a few passengers offering magic to cure motion sickness here and there. They're charging for it though.
And most of them seem to be monk or priest types, Job related to sacredness-tree, none seems to be of mage-tree.
Are mages who can use healing magic rare?

<<Mages normally cannot learn [Healing Magic] Skill. At best they may use Support Magic with vestigial recovery effects you know? I mean there's an exception like the Special Class [Archmage], but frankly that Job is even rarer than Sage.>>

Really?
But Olivie can use healing magic on top of Offensive, Spirit, Support and even Space Magic.

<<That's the special quality of [Sage] Job, you see. They have the aptitudes for every single [Magic] Skills with better proficiency growth rates to boot. The Job is pretty much the perfect upgrade to Mage.>>

Eh, then why don't all those Mages choose [Sage]-tree Job when they come of age?
You're saying it like Mages are just overall poorer than Sages.

<<Because the condition is to have learned four types of Magic Skills including Healing Magic before you come of age. Offensive Magic aside, trying to raise enough proficiency for Healing and Support Magic before you come of age is virtually impossible. Olivie-san simply happened to have pulled the right Skill set by chance before she did.>>

So like, you can't get this Job if your luck in Skill gacha is bad huh.

<<If we're being brutally honest, then yes I suppose that is one way to put it...>>

"U, uu... Y-young miss, you can use healing magic...? S-sorry but will you cure my sickness..."

"I'm a man. Quit butting in our conversation just cuz you don't wanna pay, sheesh."

A pale faced old man walked up asking for my help. Can't anyone do something about this misgender thing...
I'd feel bad forsaking him, guess I'll just do it quick.

"There you go, right as day. This is the last time, you got that. I don't wanna ruin those healer folks' days."

"Y-yeah. Thank you. I'm back on my feet thanks to you."

"I thought you'd help anyone cause you're a hero, Neora, but you're surprisingly strict on that point."

"Nothing good comes out of overexerting myself. There's a virtue in modesty."

"You say that with your eyes locked on Olivie, you perverted hero...!"

"U-um, it's embarrassing, when, you're staring so much..."

"Sorry sorry, couldn't help myself owowowowow! Levia-san, quit pinching my back, no seriously stop that, it hurts!"

Olivie held her chest while looking down and blushing hard.
...I feel bad for her, guess I'll try to keep it in moderation. Trying at least.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

"Oh, we're finally arriving at the port town. Ah, guess this is the end of our nice little day off."

"N-no more ship voyage finally... I don't care anymore, I just wanna get on solid ground and say goodbye to all this swaying..."

"Our first ship voyage ended peacefully without any issue... By the way, I understand that we have gone all the way to the first continent to power up for our demon king elimination objective, but will I really be of use..."

"No no, Olivie you have some amazing ability, it'll be fine. I mean my Offensive Magic Skill level is still low, having high powered long range magic support and even healing and buffs at our disposal is super nice. I'm counting on you."

"Y-yes... Thank, you so much, hero-sama."

"Please don't call me that. My Job may be Hero, but I ain't that great a human myself, just Neora is fine."

"Y-yes, Neora... San."

She's still sounding awkward, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.
Then someday, she'll be my big breasted harem member I'm sorry, forgive me, please don't turn your bloodlust my way, it's scary Levia-san.

"Power up, how concretely? Are we recruiting a new guy?"

"No, apparently the guild is gonna refer us to people who will train us, they'll help us guide our leveling process."

"Guild referral?"

"Yeah, apparently the scale of destruction caused by demons under the current Demon King is far bigger than any prior one, their invasion rate is much faster too. If the hero stays weak meanwhile, it'll affect the morale of the anti-demon army, so they want us to get stronger quick."

"Right, I heard news about the third continent on the brink of total collapse. At the pace it's going, other continents will share the same fate by next year."

"...So it's wrong to assume it will never be our problem."

It's just that, I don't know if you can expect us to tear through armies of demons and magic beasts no matter how strong we get.
This may be another world, but it's also a reality we live in. Individual strength just can't beat sheer numerical superiority.
And yet, I wonder what's the real reason behind the guild swooping in to help hero get stronger.

"So, what's this trainer of ours like, any idea?"

"I don't know, the guild said they're a Rank S adventurer but I'm not told on what they're like. I'm sure they've informed that person about us, but yeah, wish they'd shared more."

The ship stopped while we were talking. Must have anchored.
Now then, we're to meet up at this port town, guess we'll head to the guild for now.

...!!

Among the crowd at the other side of the crossing bridge from our ship, someone is emanating an aura as if it's an entirely different being.
Strong. It's overwhelmingly stronger than any people, no any creatures I've ever encountered. You can tell their strength from so far away.
I'm sure of it, that must be--

"Nice to meet you, Hero-dono."

Just when I tried to squint harder at that person, a woman's face appeared in front of mine.
She's staring at me with a mischievous smile.

"Uwaaa!!?"

"Ahaha, nice reaction. Seems worth training for, ma'am."

Who even is this ma'am!
Heck, who even is this woman!? It's almost like she showed up out of thin air.

The woman has long blond hair, long ears, extremely forged yet not at all brawny body, you could even say thin, with a beautiful body line.
Checking her Status, she's 300 year old, Race Elf. Her Base Level is 72, simply monstrous.
This person must be the S-ranked adventurer that will train us...!

"E-err, are you the person the guild referred to us?"

"Yup, sure am. The name's Aitserina. Don't be a stranger and call me Aina-chan now, okay~."

"...I'm Neo Raifu. Please call me Neora-san, Aina-san."

"Leviaria. Call me Levia, okay Aina-san."

"My name is Olivier. It's my pleasure to meet you, Aina-san."

"Auu, nobody's using chan. Onee-chan is sad yoyoyo."

Her jesting speech and behavior. Yet, her strength is immeasurable.
I mean, we're just chatting here yet I can't stop my goosebumps or my body shaking. I'm sweating bullet even.
This person will train us...?

Part of me thought this trainer thing wouldn't be of much help but man was I full of hubris.
Crap. This person is terrifying. Way too strong. Forget training, she might end up killing us instead.

"Now that's out of the way, time for a little chat about our future plan. Right this way, ladies."

"...I'm a man."

"...Eeeh, no waaay!? W-why dontcha show, this onee-san?"

"H-hey, wh, why are you trying to pull off my trousers! Please stop it!!"

"Fu, fufufu the guild told me it was gonna be a 'cute hero', was so sure it'd be a girl, nope, turned out it's a boy. This is gonna be hella fun fufufufu...!!"

"L-let me go! Ah, he, help! Heelpfh!"

Is this woman alright!? No really, is she right in the head!?
Seriously, let me go! They're tearing off! My trousers are tearing off! How is she so strong anyway!?
Are we really gonna be alright!? Physically speaking that is, got a feeling my chastity and such are gonna be in danger!

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 451

451 Epithet Holders

The soldiers made way for a lone man walking showily who then stopped before me.
The man is holding what I think a rapier. Then he named himself.

"I am the one and only, 'Swift Flash', Nigu. Well met. Now die!"

Immediately after he said that, he took a stance and stepped forward as he made a stabbing motion with his rapier.
That's fine. Fine and all, I was already fully prepared the instant he took a stance.
After all I only need a tiny bit of 'gap' to enter Accelerated State.
The tip of his rapier has stopped right in front of my heart. Completely frozen still.

(Ooh, damn this is some scary stuff! Guy had no wasted movement at all, and his rapier got way too close for comfort. This was dangerous even though I didn't let my guard down.)

My weakness is attacks outside my recognition. But this guy's blade handling was simply way too sharp.
I might have died had he another second.
Really drives home how my weakness could easily result in my death.

(I'm getting too sloven. This is why too grand a power can be troublesome...)

Having something this excessive tends to corrupt people. Like 'Everything will be fine, I have this power'.
There's no guarantee an even greater power doesn't exist in this world, I can't ever get careless.
My greatest enemy currently are those who are capable of killing my 'gap'.
The fact that I only narrowly escaped death this time is proof of that. 'Something' that can kill me may show up in the most unexpected way.

(But man, what the hell is Swift Flash... Chuunibyo? Hm, what did they say again about Epithet Holders? Ah, this guy is one of those huh.)

As I was thinking all that, I poked this Swift Flash guy's armor and undid Acceleration.

"How could this happen to meeeeee!"
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
Swift Flash drew a nice arc in the air as he yelled that loud.

"That Nigu got done in!?" "That man who never let his foe counter attack!?" "Wait! This is impossible for us..."
"I didn't see what Nigu was doing?" "I did! He took a step forward and a thrust! Then he got blown away right off the bat..."
"How? Did that suspicious guy do it?" "No no no no! All that guy did was standing still! How's that right?!"

"Ha! It's this great me's turn now! That feeble Nigu is nothing more than an opening act! I'm gonna flatten that guy dead!"

Yet another person shoved away the clattering soldiers and stepped forward.
A bear-like old man holding a big, a really big shield is standing before me now.
He's grinning full of confidence as he's ramming at me while brandishing his greatshield.
It's what they call a shield bash.
He's slow but the attack boasts extraordinary power. The shield is so big I have nowhere to run.
Anybody would easily get blown away if that hit. Which would be fortunate of them. This attack should be dangerous enough to kill someone if it hit their head.
Many bones will definitely break too.

But that applies to ordinary men. My body is abnormal. Even outside Accelerated State.
The sheer strength it possesses is simply monstrous. Stopping this greatshield's advance by just holding one hand ahead is not normal no matter how you look at it.

I'm doing it the 'normal' way without Acceleration as a show of force.
The gap in our strength should make these people understand they're no match for me. The plan is to have the remaining forces lose their fighting spirits.

The greatshielder old man shouted, 'Uoh!?' as he found himself getting pushed away instead.
The clamoring front row soldiers lost their word after witnessing that.

Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 183

Position and Will

I dragged the two assailants into the workshop and started a 'talk' with them.
The program includes grinding dustcloth on their arm until it's dripping red liquid and then rubbing Lightning Pepper on it. No I guess how it's done doesn't matter.

Julian's two assailants are both High Assassins at later half Lv30s. They're relatively strong yet they got knocked out just from me bumping into them by accident. Looks like they're not accustomed to being ambushed despite being ambushing specialists.

"Why did you attack Julian? Is it a grudge, or are you two hired hands?"

"..."

"...Pe."

One is silent, the other is spiteful. Looks like they're not gonna talk huh. Hoou.

If that's how you wanna play, then I too have my ways.

I took the head of the ogre I headbutted to death a few days ago from Item Screen in front of these assailants.
I was planning to get it made into a new equipment at Gen's Workshop, but they couldn't accept new order yet.
Due to the counter headbutt I did on it, the head looks real gory I can't bear to look at it. Belch.

The assailants' eyes popped wide when they saw it.
Afterward, I took Explosion Buster, the exploding great hammer from Item Screen.

"You guys wanna turn into this? You have the resolution to brutally kill people, of course you're prepared to get brutalized yourself, yeah? Let's do this, heave-ho."

"H-hiiyiii!! P-please waiit!"

"I-I'll talk! I'll talk, don't do it!! Someone hired us to attack! The client is the second son of Duchy House of Febronia, Ivarad the family head."

As I swung explos-etc like a golf club and stopped short on their heads, they confessed just like that.
...Hold out a little more won't you. Of course I was just threatening you.

"Hey hey, take it outside if you're gonna do it. I cannot have my workshop get any dirtier."

Julian shrugged his shoulders as he watched us.
Uh, I think there's a more worrying thing here.

Apparently these two received a specific instruction on how to kill Julian from their client.
Which is some nasty stuff.
『Do not kill him outright, do not deign him an easy death. Cut off his arms, and make that good-for-nothing taste despair as he's dying a slow excruciating death.』
So they said. What a poor taste~.

"Duchy House of Febronia huh, are you familiar with it, Julian? I don't really know noble houses."

"...Umu. That is my former family house."

"...Wha?"

"I am aware that he loathes me, but to think he would go as far as sending assassins... I am no longer an heir to the house, he could have left me alone. Quite tenacious this kid brother of mine, truly."

Eh, wha, what? What's that mean?
Former house? Kid brother? ...Oy, oy, he must be joking.

"Are you telling me, your little brother hired these guys to kill you...!?"

"That appears to be the case. That is if we are to believe these two are not lying but the word 'A slow excruciating death' sounds exactly like him, I do not think it's a mistake... I do wish it was."

Uh, what kind of kid brother is he anyway.
Is that even possible when the elder brother is like this.

"...What? Did you do something so bad to get your brother hate your guts that badly? What kinda grudge is he holding..."

"Come to think of it, have I ever talked about my former nobility days?"

"No, I just heard about it offhand."

Guild receptionist Furoina-san mentioned it, but I never imagined it to be true.
I mean considering his normal behavior, you'd think he's just a random oddball or a lunatic.

"...I had been receiving tutelage in order to become a proper heir from young age. Territorial management, the right etiquette to mingle with other nobles, you name it. I never questioned such education no matter how tough it was."

Uwah, this guy started monologuing.
Is this gonna take long? Ah, it looks like it is.
...I shouldn't have blurted out that sarcasm.

"On the other hand, my kid brother... It was decided that Ivara was to be wedded to a daughter of a duchy house, he was to support me as a connection to that household. But my brother was a prideful man, you see. He always grumbled how he was treated like an extra."

"Well, guess you'd hate getting told to live your life as your brother's support without a say on it. I would."

"Then just as my brother kept piling up his discontent, anger and grudge on me day by day, I stealthily went to read the closely guarded hero's note my family is responsible of. I ended up reading it. And found out about the existence of all those wonderful weaponry."

"I can't catch up with the rapid development. How'd it go from your kid brother to you reading the hero's dark history, cough... Hero's note."

"Now now, just listen. Thereafter that moment on, I could not hold the urge to get those weapons reproduced and bear witness to them wielded. I tried to order their creations from blacksmiths and magic tool makers, but nobody was able to turn them into reality. It's not simply a matter of Skills, you cannot make hero's weapons without an understanding on the idea, or rather the concept behind them."

Well, I can't imagine there's a lot of people who can understand those insane weapons. They're too jam packed with men's romance, many parts are just inefficient.
That might be different to people who are familiar with games, manga and fictions, but to the people of this world... I'm not one to talk for matching well with these weapons and these weapons only though.

"As days went on and my irritation grew from being unable to find the right maker, I found myself gripping a hammer in a quest to reproduce hero's weaponry by my own hands. I would spend a whole day training to engrave magic tool formulas."

"Uh, what about your nobility tutelage. Ain't no way you got time for that."

"Umu. Naturally my parents were enraged and warned me to cease such gambols at once. Indeed it was perfectly reasonable of them... And yet to that, I would ignore their plea and continue to strike my hammer and engrave magic formulas."

"...Talk about filial piety or lack thereof."

"Fuhaha, you tell me about it. Then as I kept at my endeavors despite everything they told me, they were finally fed up of me or perhaps they sympathized with their foolish son's plight. My parents made the decision to expel me from the household, and for me to go independent before coming of age. Well, to keep things short, I was disinherited."

Julian laughed at himself as he narrated his life story.
I could tell a hint of loneliness and nostalgia from his expression.

"The last person who saw me off was my kid brother. 『You good for nothing. Never again shall you show your mug before me.』 was his last word to me."

"What-a-wonderful-kid-brother-you-have."

"...Indeed, he is too good for me."

――――――――――――――――――――――

"Aniue, tell me one thing. Is your life as an heir to a duke household such a trivial matter to you? What does the position of duke family head mean to you?"

"Mu? Hm, nothing?"

"What...?"

"Umu, now that I think about it, this household might have never been that important to me. I feel like that has now finally been made clear to me with your inquiry."

"...You, what are you."

"'I must become someone fit to be the family head', 'I must strive hard as to not disgrace myself before our people', I bore such a sense of duty as I lived, but looking back, those were what I was told to be, not what I truly wanted to do myself."

"I wish to create the weapons designed by hero with my own hands and to witness them wielded. Inconsequential that may be, that's what I truly desire for the first time in my life."

"And now that I am aware of my own desire, I cannot see the fascination on becoming the heir to a duchy house. I am aware how selfish that is, but please forgive your brother for departing."

"Don't screw with me! Just how much do you think I coveted this position you deem as worthless!"

"Haven't you always spoken about wanting to live your life as Ivarad Febronia himself, not just as my support? That too is your own will. With me no longer in the picture, that wish shall now come true surely. What is bad about that?"

"I do not wish for a position aniue cast away! How could you so easily crush the thing I yearned so underfoot!"

"Ah, sorry. It's time to board my wagon, I'll have to excuse myself... Take care of yourself, Ivara."

"Hold it! Don't you dare run away! I won't forgive you bastard, ever! Die, die a slow excruciating death as you taste despair, you good for nothing!"

――――――――――――――――――――――

"...Ever since that parting, we never had any more contact."

"At least talk properly with your brother to the end..."

"I would like to but if I missed that wagon, I would have to wait a full week for another to come by. Returning home and staying there for another week right after I was set on leaving wouldn't do, would it."

...Uh well, I guess that would be awkward.
But I dunno about that resulting in his brother setting his sight on his life.

"Uumu, I managed to escape death this time thanks to my customer, but Ivara would surely send another assassin my way once he found out about my survival."

"...Excuse me."

I dropped my fist on the two assailants' heads.

"Sooi!"

"Adaa!!"
"Gyaa!!"

Taking that head-on, the two got knocked out. RIP. Don't think bad of me.
Julian looked at me dubiously as he spoke.

"...Pray tell what are you doing?"

"I wanna discuss our future plan. Can't have prying ears listening in now."

"That's quite a polite way to induce drowsiness. They are not even twitching, are they even alive?"

It's fine, it's fine, they may have lost half of their HPs, but they're not dead.
Good grief, we're gonna get busy if we wanna get out of kid brother-san's ploy. What a pain.
...A yandere-like grudge from his own kid brother. What layer of hell is this. Even got goosebumps out of me.
