Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 128

Hunting Fest (5) Platinum Chicken Army Corps

Damn, this chicken's got no opening despite its size!
Heck, being small not only makes it hard to hit but the thing is fully utilizing its speed and size in its assault.
It's got twice my Attack power too, a direct hit would melt my HP.

"Damn, I was sure that'd hit! It dodged by a hair's breadth! How, it's just a chicken!"

"Just when it looked like we finally got it cornered, the thing zoomed away at incredible speed! This chicken can definitely use [Ground Shrink]!"

"Magic won't hit at this distance too, yet it keeps running away with Ground Shrink if you try to get close before immediately returning to attack back! This chicken is super irritating!"

"And it's too small to target and too fast to keep up!"

"Also, what's up with that smug attitude anyway! Chicken magic beasts should be clucking noisily yet this guy's acting so calm and composed, it's getting under my skin!"

『Cluck.』

That's about sum it up, thanks for the exposition guys.
It's exactly what they said, how our attacks keep missing is the biggest roadblock.
[Stairway to Heavens] looks to be a skilled party of four, their levels are around 30-40.
I'm sure they could have managed to deal with the chicken if they were still in a tip-top shape.
But worn down and battered like they are now, this chicken is proving too much for them.

I would constantly wedge myself between them right as the chicken went for the party and went for an ambush but it would get away with Ground Shrink every single time.
Also it'd dodge the party's attacks by a hair's breadth yet always make sure to deploy Ground Shrink to evade me.
I mean I guess narrowly dodging would be bad for the chicken as I could drive Pile Bunker from anywhere within my surroundings.
But I'm bothered by how alert it is to my attacks even though I haven't shot a Pile Bunker once. Is it its wild instincts or intuition working?
Hm, wait a minute? The fact that it always uses Ground Shrink when it's me attacking must mean...

....

This chicken might just be a dumdum. I can't say for sure yet but I think I've glimpsed the path to victory.
I don't think it'd go that smoothly but might as well give it a shot rather than keeping this stalemate forever.
There's still four area breachers left after all. With that said, I flew toward the chicken with Mana Flight!

『Cluck, cluck.』

"Ah, it went away with Ground Shrink again!"

"Hey you! That chicken's just gonna keep getting away, come up with a new move!"

The chicken kept dodging me with Ground Shrink while calmly clucking.
I'm getting booed somehow, but this is part of the strategy just you know.

I keep giving chase to the fleeing chicken with Mana Flight.

『Cluck.』

Chase.

『C-cluck.』

Chase, chase, chase.

『C-cluck!』

Chase, pursuit, keep on keeping close!

『Cluck, cluuck!』

Why does this chicken go out of its way to use Ground Shrink to deal with me?
Probably because it's wary of someone that's going as fast as it is, but I'm guessing it's also doing this as a form of 'training'.
Ground Shrink is an Ability of Ultimate Martial Arts Lv3. It probably had just learned it after evolving.
In order to master this new ability, someone moving as fast is the perfect sparring partner.
But an ability it's not accustomed with must mean it doesn't have a complete understanding on the downsides as well.

My Mana Flight consumes barely any MP if I'm just floating around.
Moving at high speed is simply me moving the mana wrapped around me, hence it also doesn't consume much as long as I'm not traveling over a long distance.
But what about the Skill Ability this magic beast uses?

Even the lesser version, Quick Step eats up around 5 stamina per use.
Then how about the upgraded version, Ground Shrink?
According to its Stats, each usage consumes around 15 stamina points, it has now lost about 30% of its max stamina after so many uses.
You're gonna run your stamina dry at this rate, how do you like that?

『Cl-』

『Cluuuuuuuuuuuuck!!!』

The chicken suddenly let out an earsplitting shriek.
A frantic cluck that's unlike its usual smug ones.
I thought it was finally getting desperate, but apparently it's something else.

"O-oy, what's the deal with that echoing shriek."

"G-guys, are you hearing some sorta of noise? It's getting gradually closer..."

"...No, was that a 'Call Howling'!? We're barely holding out against just one chicken too, hell no!"

...Menu-san, what was that shriek?
I can sense more than a dozen life force reading coming this way.

<<Magic Beast Skill Lv6 Ability [Call Howling] an ability to summon same type magic beasts located within the howl's range. The summoned beasts will act in accordance to the summoner's will.>>

...Seriously?
Our hands are full enough dealing with this platinum chicken!
Is it cause I drove it to the corner? ...No, it'd have used it either way once it felt threatened.

『Cluck! Cluuuuuuuuuuuck!!』

『Gluuuuuuuuuck!!』

『Gugyaaaaaaaaaaa!!!』

While I was lost in thought, chicken magic beasts came in drove from all directions.
14 of them in total.
There's six greyish ones, seven silver ones, and a huge one the size of an ostrich, colored gold.
The greyish ones must be the form before silver. Ah, they're called Iron Cock. Shouldn't iron come before bronze? Well whatever.
Seven silver is like having seven High Cave Bears. That alone makes this situation dire.
The clincher is the big sized chicken, Golden Cock. It's way big, and it doesn't even cluck like other chickens, is it even a chicken?

...What do, really what do I do now.
I should have told the four to leave while I was dealing with Platinum had I known this.
Then I could have found the right time to escape myself... No point in crying over spilled milk, let's check our hands and plan out how to overcome this.

First of all, let's see the party of four's strength.

A blond middle aged Swordsman [Gregguna] Lv43. No wait, he's a mid grade Job holder [Swordsmaster] not just a Swordsman. He's the only one who can possibly handle the golden chicken.

A silver haired shielder young man, [Hueytt] Lv38. He's also a mid grade Job holder [Wall Shielder]. Not only can he block attacks, he also has a Skill that draws aggro to himself, he should work as a good tank against mobs.

Blond haired mage woman, [Jesyferl] Lv36.  Offensive Magic at Lv9 huh... Too bad, just one more and she could have used advanced level magic. But she's apparently specialized in wind magic, capable of wide area attacks and high powered single point attacks to deal with a variety of enemies.

The last one is a long haired ponytail archer woman [Navicia] Lv36. Mid grade Job [Pinpoint Archer]. Despite that name, she couldn't even land a hit on that platinum chicken but I guess that thing is way out of her league. I'm sure she can hit other chickens just fine.

However, all of them are worn down with little MP and SP left.
Even if they weren't, they likely would have a hard time against this many beasts.
...No choice, there's no holding back now. Let's go at this with everything I have.

399 Things Left Behind and Speed

After meal, I brought the dishes to the counter.
Five people were standing at the ready there. The coachman spoke. His face was twitching a bit under the smile.

"G-good morning. We are ready to depart anytime, how would you like?"

A trifling matter crossed my mind yet again.

(Wouldn't shared stagecoaches like this usually leave behind people who oversleep? Or at least they'd wake them up by force, no?)

"Let's depart now. We've wasted a lot of time so things are probably not going on schedule. Guess I'd have to ask the ladies to bear camping out. Sorry about that, I shouldn't have overslept."

I bowed as I apologized. A 'gesture' I was all too familiar with in my past life.
Even though my body here should have been reset. I got reborn after all.
But it seemed to be etched on my memory, retracing it was effortless.

"Please raise your head. We don't mind at all. We're aware that it's not your fault."

Linda replied. I went back to standing upright.

"Ah, yeah, I've told some of those bandits to stay here and leave all their belongings and cash to the village as a compensation, is that alright?"

The coachman smiled wryly at this.

"We have no sway on that. You took care of everything alone after all. If that is your wish, I shall go notify the village elder. Please get on the stagecoach in the meantime."

The stagecoach was apparently parked in front of the village's entrance, so we walked there.
I'm sure the coachman would settle everything by then. Honestly, I was glad I didn't have to go.

(I mean they'd definitely question me about last night. That's such a huge pain. Also, that coachman seems to have an idea of his own anyway.)

An ordinary coachman wouldn't play messenger like this.
His job should start and end at driving the stagecoach. Normally, I should be the one doing all the negotiation while he's tending the stagecoach.

I decided to stop my unusually keen sense on this stuff and forgot about the whole thing by gazing at the tranquil scenery around the village.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
(Well, guess the man's got his 'duty'. I'll shut up about it.)

Who can say if me blurting something wouldn't end up with another addition to this journey. I don't need any more spark of trouble igniting.

"It is done. Let us depart."

The coachman came back, our stagecoach set off at once.
The animals pulling this coach is not exactly horses. I'm used to it by now.
Oft seen in fantasy they are four dragons.

(I couldn't help but laugh when I first saw them back then. I mean they look like camels but not really. Some parts look somewhat similar, while some are completely unlike. I'm sure I'll never stop being surprised by these things.)

The stagecoach is running faster than during our trip to the village, likely to make up for the lost time.
But it's still far slower than Chimera when it flew us to the kingdom.
That's probably why the ladies and underling look unfazed.
Unlike them however, the coachman had a tense strained expression on his face, indicating that this speed is not 'normal' in this world, enough for him to be on the highest alert.

"Oy! We might get in an accident if we're going too fast! Drop it to normal speed!"

I said that loudly to counteract the noisy clattering.
It'd be bad if this 'not normal' routine invited yet another trouble our way.
The coachman looked relieved when he heard me and slowed down the pace after glancing at me.

Hunting Fest (4) Cleaning Up of Red Area Breachers Begins

Crackle! Crackle! Crackle! Three volleys of Explosion Coral resounded.

It's a signal Alma and I had decided upon to indicate me requiring her assistance. We've checked that you could still hear the sound even separated over one or two areas.
Alma's icon immediately went toward the direction of magic beast after it was fired. Looks like she got it no problem.
She stopped for a few seconds before rapidly moving toward Orange Area. She's heading for the closest and most powerful magic beasts to her.
That's what we had agreed upon previously.

『Once you have confirmed the signal, please check with Mana Search. If I'm heading your way, please stay put where you are. But if I'm moving away from you, there must be multiple magic beasts breaching Orange Area, so please go to a separate magic beast. However, you absolutely must not take more than you can. If you're too exhausted to go, please stand by in Yellow Area.』

So I told her, but considering she's going, I guess she's still got some peps in her.
Oh, Alma's mana has been restored. She must have taken the mana recovery pills I gave her. She won't run out of gas easily now.

Now then, I'm currently hurrying toward a party that's under attack.
They're not only up against a powerful magic beast, they're also in a state of exhaustion.
You can replenish mana and energy with items and food but not fatigue. Wonder if Alma's gonna be fine.
Still, the timing feels amiss.
One or two breachers are one thing, but five of them all at once right when everybody is at their limit near the end is just weird.
...Is someone pulling the string behind the scenes? No way.

Now then, the party in question is finally in sight, time to deal with this magic beast.
The party seems to be having a tough time, just who are they fighting anyway.

『.....Cluck.』

Yet another chicken. Aren't there way too many chickens in this prairie?
That thought crossed my mind only for an instant, as this specimen is clearly on another level compared to your average chickens. I mean it's glittering in platinum color and all.
Right at Lv50, it must have just evolved. It's two stages above Silver Cock with an overwhelming presence you wouldn't believe coming from a chicken.
Unlike Bronze and Silver, it's the same size as the chickens you see on earth, but I can sense an enormous power emanating from this thing.
Its Attributes are stupidly high especially AGI at almost four digits, what the heck. In fact it's probably at four digits effectively when factoring Skills, scaaaary.
It's got two Skills at Lv10, two seemingly higher tier Skills, and two Master Skills. What's the deal with this chicken, how is it so strong. Heck, strength-wise, it's second only to that Slime so far! But it's just a chicken!

"O-oy! Something's coming this way again! It's flying!"

"Wait, isn't that one of the staff members, that Soarer mask guy?"

"It's our cavalry! W-we're save--"

『Cluck.』

Platinum Cock dashed at the party as they sounded relieved.
F-fast!? It's moving way too fast! My eyes could barely follow!

≪Usage of Ultimate Martial Arts Lv3 [Ground Shrink] Confirmed≫

S-so that's the real Ground Shrink. It's even faster than my Mana Flight at max speed.
...The first time I saw it used and it was by a chicken. It's kinda...

"Uowaaaaaa!!? W-watch it!"

"Hey, don't look away now! We've seen first hand how monstrously strong this chicken is!"

"I can't anymore with this chicken! It's so strong, tough, and small which makes it harder to land a hit!"

The party is seemingly quite skilled themselves. They managed to dodge that attack but they can't seem to last much longer due to exhaustion. I've gotta hurry and back them up.
For now, I'll try an ambush like with that Silver Cock earlier.
...The problem is whether my Stats can put a dent on it.

...The most important stats are about half of that chicken, kinda vexing.
I can explosively raise them above this chicken's if I use Energy Control, the Reina way, but it likely won't be enough.
I'm gonna have to work together with that party if the ambush fails.

I closed in on the chicken with Mana Flight.
Hit it with high powered Pile Bunker at point blank and--

『Cluck.』

!
It saw through my approach!?
The chicken used Ground Shrink right as I got close and managed to get away.
This isn't all due to its high Perception alone. It could precisely predict what's happening all around it.
No wonder the thing's Lv50. It must have an abundance of combat experience on top of high Attributes.

"S-so fast...!! How did that thing react to that mask guy's speed."

"There's no way we can beat that! We gotta run!"

"We would if we could! How do you expect us to outrun that speed in this vast prairie!"

Yeah, and I can't exactly carry them all off with Mana Flight.
Including equipment, four adults are simply too heavy for me.
Now then, what do.

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 398

398 You Mind You Lose

Now that the biggest annoyance is no more, I fetch the collar. The mage who saw that presented his neck without any resistance.

"Now swear to it. Remember what I told you? You must have seen many people tragically losing their lives to those bandits while you were with them, in exchange for your safety. From now on, live on while cursing at your helplessness to save them. Just think that it was all due to your lack of dignity despite having the power to heal others, isn't that reason enough to thank your luck surviving this?"

"...I will devote my life in a clinic hereafter. I will strive to help people while leading a modest life..."

Once he said that, the collar on his neck let out a dazzling light in this darkness before settling down.
It activated even though he never declared he would become a slave.

(What an unexpectedly lax system. Does it also activate if the person in question has surrendered from the bottom of their heart? Well, guess it's just how it goes with magic, yup.)

There's no point in trying to figure out the mechanic behind it. What's important is that declaration worked.

(I mean you know, magic? My image of magic is something to do with will power or something. It must have activated this time because the guy's mental state was at its lowest.)

I realized my mind got sidetracked again. I shook my head to forget that and started walking away from the square toward the inn.

"Ah, don't even think about running away. I'll have the villagers call officials here. You all are gonna be handed to them. And you, tell them about your collar and beg for forgiveness yourself. Welp, night then."

I warned the mage and hurried back to the inn to forget everything.
There's nothing left for me to do here. Someone somewhere would take care of the rest. I don't wanna be stuck doing the clean up. I kept walking without looking back, implying my responsibility is over now.
The innkeeper was surprised when I got back.

"A, ah? You didn't die?! H-how'd you even survive that? What happened to those bandits? Why you came back?"

He must have never doubted I'd get killed. He kept barraging me with more and more questions. Must be quite a shock.
I'm not gonna keep him company. I'm sleepy. Drowsy.

"I'm going back to my room and bed. I get you've got lots of questions, mister. Go to the square if you wanna find out. Oh, if you decide to go, tell the villagers everything is all right now. So yeah, nighty night... fa~a."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
As I yawned and entered my room, the underling looked stupefied which I ignored and dived into my bed.
I shut my eyes and lost myself in darkness.

Morning after, I got up just before noon. I paid for our rooms until evening so it's fine.
However, I still gotta apologize for oversleeping. To the coachman and the ladies.

"Aah, I had no time yesterday... Couldn't help myself."

I never explained to the ladies last night.
Hence, I went to the next door and knocked on their room while feeling slightly awkward.

"My bad, I overslept. Our departure's gonna have to wait, sorry about that. I'm gonna go prepare right away, wait a bit. I'll explain what happened last night on the stagecoach."

Linda immediately replied behind the door.

"W-w-w-w-we don't mind. Please take your time. The innkeeper said he will bring your meal to your room. We can depart once you're done, please don't worry!"

She sounded unusually restless. I'm curious but decide against asking why.

"Got it. I'll do just that. Later then."

I only paid tips for yesterday's dinner. So I thought Linda must have paid for it this time, yet she never asked me what happened. That bothered me a tad.

"What? What's going on? ...Well, whatever. I am hungry, I shouldn't worry too much. The faster we arrive at the commercial city, the better."

My top priority is delivering the ladies to someone trustworthy that will shelter them. No point worrying over trivial stuff.

As I got back into my room, underling also returned with food.
He silently put it on the table and bowed before leaving again.

"Hm? What's up with him? Why's he acting like a servant... well whatever, I'm hungry. Let's just eat. Gotta feed my brain. Best not overthink it."

You mind you lose, better off not knowing. As I desperately tried to convince myself that, I worked my appetite on the food.

Hunting Fest (3) Knew It

Whooaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.....!
Why'd I go and spout all that smug stuff....!
I feel so cringe now... I wanna die, so embarrassing.
What the heck is 'Justice without substance is worthless' even. Who am I trying impress? Am I dumb? A fool? Wanna die? ...I wanna die! Right here and nowwwwwwww!

『Kukyaaaaaaaaaaa!』

I mean you know? Wasn't he an annoying pest who falsely accused us back when we clashed at the guild? Yet guy risked himself to help someone earlier.

『Ku-kukyuuuaaaaaaaaaa!!』

Why'd he try to show his cool side now of all time. Like you know? I think the courage to save someone at your own peril is a great quality to have. In fact, standing up against an opponent stronger than you may be more commendable than fighting your match in a way.

『Kyaaaaaaaaaa!! Kukyaaaaaaaaaaa!』

But I can't just change my impression that easily. Why didn't he show that cool side from the beginning anyway. I'm getting really conflicted now. How do I vent this irritation.

『Giigyaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!』

Ugh

"Shut the hell up already dangit!!"

『Gyagubogya!!?』

[Storm Wing] an evolved form of Blade Wing had been buzzing around me in the sky, shooting magic my way in its attempt to appeal to me all this time.
It was getting so persistent when I was feeling irritated so I gave it a good whack with an Energy Control-boosted fist. The bird's head got squashed, killing it instantly. Oops, didn't mean that.
Aah, that was one magic beast less for participants. No points is awarded to beasts defeated by staff members.
Well, guess it was an act of self-defense?
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

"...Oy, that guy just killed a Storm Wing with one punch..."

"Not only can he fly, guy's also an incredible martial artist, just who in the hell..."

Some of the staff and participants were watching without me realizing, I feigned ignorance.
How long till the end now? I just wanna go home. Taking a break alone in my room.

<<Two and a half hour left until the end.>>

That's so long, it's only the midway point huh...
What's the scores like I wonder, Menu-san do you know about Pea Green and Yellow Area scores at least?

<<...Presently, the top spot in Pea Green Area belongs to D-rank party [Quiet Nights] at 21 kills. However, as they are a three-man party, their effective point is 7. As such, the real top spot belongs to Reinamiure at 19 kills. Followed by Radiasta at 16 kills.>>

Figured being in a party gets you high scores, but Reina is pretty bad news herself narrowly winning despite running solo.
Not to mention the green haired boy's guts trailing her by 3 points. Is he really a mere Daggerist? What an amazing kid.
Heck, 21 kills in two and a half hour is the same as our usual pace. Why'd people call us abnormal and stuff then?

<<...The top party has been perusing powerful Scrolls, irrespective of costs. Their pace will likely drop considerably once they run out of Scrolls.>>

...I didn't pay attention when hot uncle party mentioned it, but what's a Scroll anyway?

<<[Scrolls] are scroll-shaped one time use magic tools that contain sealed Skill Abilities such as Offensive Magic. They turn into a blank paper once those abilities have been used, losing their effects in the process.>>

So like disposable instant items huh.

<<Perusing Scrolls allow one to use Skill Abilities regardless of their Job types, however Scroll creation demands high cost making them fetch for as much as 10000 en even for one Lv1 Offensive Magic Scroll.>>

That's pricey alright, well I can see some people still opting to purchase Scrolls that contain powerful offensive spells.
Pea Green Area should have either Reina or green haired boy as the winner. It turned out to be a good match for her, good to see that. Just gonna hope she doesn't overdo it and hurt herself.
How about Yellow Area.

<<Presently, the top spot is held by Almatina at 34 kills. She has hunted multiple Orange Area breachers hence her kill quality is also excellent. Second spot is held by [Wars Roses] party at 20 kills. It's a party of three, hence the effective point is at 6-7. Third spot is a solo archer, [Welkanus] at 18 kills.>>

...Alma-san's got a huge lead over the second spot. She's really not pulling any punches.
On top of that, she's been proactively going for area breachers so even if she loses by points somehow, she'll still take the lead from kill quality. She's simply on a whole different level.
Of course her strength plays a big role but being able to use Mana Search and Energy Search must have been a huge advantage. I mean she can keep making a beeline to magic beasts.
As you'd expect though, both of them are exhausted now, they're currently having a meal. Mana is restored with a level up, but not energy. Make sure to eat well girls.

Afterward, more magic beasts breached through the line in all areas, but only the woman Blue protected ended up dropping out of the fest.
...Actually, no magic beasts from Red Area has breached Orange Area yet. This is probably... no, definitely the pattern where the breach happens late.
We've decided on a signal for Alma to help me in case of emergency but who can say it'll reach her.

One and a half hour passed since then.
Everybody moved around even more erratically during the last spurt.
Where'd they get all that energy from, they must all be exhausted by now.
There's much fewer magic beasts around too now. Isn't this environmental destruction? Is it gonna be okay?
...I suppose there's a danger of Stampede like half a year ago if they don't get culled this excessively. Guess overhunting is what you want.

<<Warning, confirmed magic beasts breaching from Red Area.>>

...Knew it, had a feeling it was just about time, dangit.

<<Five magic beasts confirmed breaching their area. Each is located far apart, going after them alone would be difficult.>>

Oy oy, even just one is bad news, and you're telling me there's five of them!?
And they're all separated ways away. This can't have been done on purpose, can it!?
...What to do.

<<Currently the closest party to the area boundary, [Stairway to Heavens], is under attack. They are in a state of exhaustion, they are unlikely to deal with it.>>

...Blast it, who could've guessed the breach from Red Area would happen during the endgame.
These participants might have a chance if it was during early and mid stage, but it's a different story now that they're all exhausted.
Even Alma only has half of her MP and SP remaining. Alone might be tough for her.
Nevertheless, I cannot not ask for her help. It's impossible for me to do this alone.
...Ah, I'm really a magnet for trouble aren't I, damn.

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 397

397 Fourth Time

I flicked the incoming fist with my finger. While being conscious not to put power behind it.
My 'consciousness' seems to affect what happens during 'Acceleration', even if I thought I shouldn't, the strength of my action would still bolstered if there was 'I wanna beat them up' somewhere in my mind. It's obvious now.
Hence I'm lightly warding off the fist while focusing on the mage instead.

(I'll break his nose first before I get rid of him.)

I still couldn't let go the want to torment the bandit boss due to my anger.

Once I undid Acceleration, the bandit boss's fist missed me by a hair and hit the ground next to me instead.
A depression of around 30 cm in diameter got created with his fist in the center.

"I missed!? That shoulda hit 'im straight!? Tch! Fine, I'mma mince you with a barrage!"

I had already made my move by the time the bandit boss lifted his arm.

"Wha! What the crapppppppp!? My arm! Oooh!? The crap didja do dammittallllllll!?"

His arm was cut off before he could lift it up. On the same exact spot I cut it thrice before.

"Oy! Magic!? Heal my arm! The hell you gawking for!? Get the hell to itttt!"

However, the mage wouldn't move. It wasn't only due to the pressure from the physically boosted bandit boss, but also at me and how easily I overwhelmed his powered up boss.
The mage gets that it was me who cut the arm. He would after the fourth time.

"I said you should go to the afterlife all while cursing yourself, but that's too good a fate for a small time villain like you. Well, whatever. Wait, what am I acting so self-important and spewing out those cheesy lines for?"

I finally regained my composure. There's no need to let this bandit guy live for one second longer.
I slowly approach him as he tried to stick his arm.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"Get the hell awayyyyyyyyy! Uwoooooooooo!"

In desperation, he swung his right leg back in an attempt to kick me.

"Nothing easier to dodge than such an obvious attack. No need for Acceleration."

I easily sidestepped the furiously swung leg at the right timing.
It was just a basic karate move as I then proceeded to slash at his torso horizontally.

"U-ugee?"

The bandit boss fell on his knees while yelping. It didn't cleanly cut him in half but with my blade sunk into half of his torso, blood gushed out.
Yet he still clung on to life as he kept groaning.
I offered my help here. With his neck now hung helplessly, I simply swung my katana down there.
A moment later, the bandit had his head parted from his body, leaving only the sound of crackling bonfire in this place.

(Ah man, I'm completely dyed in this world's color. Who the hell wanna lead a life full of bloodshed...)

I delved in martial arts in my past life. But who would have guessed I'd end up having to use them in this world?
And for it to eradicate evils at that.
I'm not an ally of justice. I do feel disgusted and indignant of evils. But only at an average level.
It's now far from average with all this constant vortex of trouble I'm pulled into.
Someone must have laid the 'groundwork' for it, my head is aching just thinking I'd keep finding my way into trouble.

Meanwhile, the one mage who saw everything in full detail from start to finish kept laughing 'Ha, ha, hahahahaha...' like a broken puppet as if laughing at my woe.

Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 125

Hunting Fest (2) Uncharacteristic Sermon

...It's been an hour since the start of the fest.
All participants are spending a lot of time seeking out magic beasts, most have hunted 5-6 beasts on average.
Yet, this pace is still considered fast relative to normal.

By the way, presently Reina's tally is at eight, while Alma's at 16 because she ran into, no, more like she kept zeroing in on packs of beasts.
Reina aside, it's likely taking Alma longer to retrieve the bodies than the battles themselves.

There have been several more magic beasts that breached their areas but thanks to the staff members as well as the participants themselves dealing with those beasts, nobody was hurt badly.
Yellow area in particular has Alma going out out her way to rush toward those breaching beasts, it's probably the most trouble-free area.
Just hoping she'd still have energy left for the latter half...

The period of beast culling is to last for about five hours. Dunno if that's long or short.
Each participants are free to choose when to take a break, have a meal, drink potions or do maintenance on their weapons. Even now there are people who are taking a breather and those who are running around looking for beasts with a bread in their mouth. You're gonna throw up.
Alma seems to be conversing her energy well, she's still got 80% on MP and SP. Quite the leeway she's got.
Reina's got her MP at 90%, and SP at around 60-70% mark, a bit slanted on SP consumption. She's gonna run herself to exhaustion in 1-2 hours.
Well, she could take a break and have a meal midway through I guess. This is nothing compared to her first two days of leveling.

Magic beasts breaching their areas may be bad, but participants aren't actually prohibited from doing so.
They pick which area to hunt in at the start and only get points by culling beasts found there, but them crossing over between areas doesn't break any rule.
There may be no penalty on killing beasts located in areas outside their pick, but they get no point in doing so.
Also, picking a different area once you've started is not against the rules either however you will have to start over from zero point.
This puts you on a time disadvantage over other participants, hence, almost nobody does it.
Those who give up mid way, or suffer serious wounds can retreat to safe zones set up in every area for treatment and such.

Some participants spread out individually all over the area, while some are staying close to each other.
If I had to say as a staff member, it'd be nice if they could stay together like that as that'd make it easy to handle things when magic beast breaches happen.
We won't say it outright as this is a competition after all, but getting attacked by a strong magic beast when you're alone poses a huge risk.
That's why us staff are here though.

...!
Speak of the devil, a lone participant has just been attacked by a breaching magic beast.
Signal bead confirmed, I'm the only staff member heading there, 30 seconds until arrival. Make it in time!
Hm, there's another participant nearby. Guess they saw that signal bead and went there.
They were much closer, and got there before me. Should be fine then.
...Wait, the first victim's been knocked out! Must have been hit bad!
The person helping could be in danger now, I've gotta hurry.

The first thing I saw at the site was a silver haired woman lying on the ground, and a chicken magic beast with an awfully lustrous silver fur. Ah, of course the name's Silver Cock.
And the person standing guard between the chicken and the helpless woman was Blue, aka that Willclause guy.
...So you were the one helping. I kinda look at him in a new light now.
The silver chicken is a Lv35, while Blue is Lv30, might be a tad tough for him.
Would be a cinch if he could use Energy or Mana Control like Alma and Reina, but Skills alone would only get you so far.
In fact, his HP is gradually getting chipped down every time he blocks the chicken's attacks with his sword and shield. I gotta help.

As I'm fast approaching with Mana Flight, I wrap my right arm with Mana Cushion and Mana Armor, produce explosive liquid and a Mana Stake at the tip and--

『Gugogeeeeee!!』

"Kuh! You! ....Wait, what is that!?"

I get next to the beast and detonate!

BOOOOM! Mana Pile Bunker hit its target and exploded with a loud booming sound, blowing the silver chicken's head to smithereens.
Hm, alrighty. The body didn't get pulverized unlike that time with Red Demon in Vinfitt. Aiming only for the head was a good decision. Its meat and feathers look of good quality, I can get them with this.
In cases the staff members intervene like this, participants don't get to collect the mats or points. Not a good result to them surely.

The unconscious woman seemed to have been kicked by the chicken, she managed to defend against the attack but hit her head when she fell.
Fortunately, her injury isn't serious. Only a bump on her head and slight bruises on neck.
Done confirming, let's get her to the safe zone. I don't wanna get involved with Blue, heck he might suspect my identity.
Ah, seeing as he helped, I guess I could throw him a wound salve or something.

"...Sorry, I got here late. Here's some medicine... Or perhaps you didn't need my help."

"...No, you were a great help. I alone wouldn't have been able to save her."

Blue took the salve and smeared it on his wound.
He's unexpectedly honest, quite different from my impression of him.

"May I hear how things got to that point?"

"...I saw that woman being attacked by a breaching magic beast and rushed to help, but I failed to protect her and she got hit in the process."

"Then, I came in the picture while you were guarding her."

"Yeah... You're, incredible. Killing such a powerful beast in just one blow. Look at me..."

And now he's getting depressed. Well, guess he got through a lot of shock today alone.
First, Alma dumped him... No, she probably didn't even pay him any attention. Huh wait, isn't that worse? ...Well whatever.
...It's not my style, but I guess I could give him some advice.

"...Trying to help someone without the strength to back it up is indeed more akin to recklessness than courage. You might get eaten along with the person you tried to save instead."

"...! But I'm...!"

"Justice without substance is worthless. You might end up troubling the people you try to help instead. Does that ring a bell?"

"...W-what do you know about me...!"

He looked sheepish despite his rebuttal. Well, of course that rung a bell.
Even though I'm sounding high and mighty, I'm only using this chance to get back on him for that matter at the guild. Man, am I petty.

"However, it is true that I might not have made it in time if you didn't come to her rescue. I am not saying your justice is entirely wrong. Nobody would object as long as it's backed with substance."

"...What is, substance anyway..."

"That's for you to ponder. Perhaps it's intellect, or connection to go against unreasonableness, perhaps it's might to defy violence, it's your ideal... Forgive me for this sermon. I have to carry her to the safe zone, if you'd excuse me."

It may look like I'm running away, but the woman really does need treatment. I've healed her with Lifeforce Control though.
Now then, fall back, fall back.

"O-oy! Tell me your name--"

Blue said something, ignore!
I ran off at blistering speed not unlike Alma earlier. Bye bye~.
Ah, guy is dumbfounded again. Eh, just gonna leave him alone.

Haa, that sermon sure wasn't like me.
Acting so high and mighty when I'm nothing great myself.
How do even define 'substance' anyway. Is it red bean paste like anko? ...Man I haven't had one since I got here. Wonder if there's someone cultivating red bean somewhere out there.
The fact that I'm always falling back to food related topics shows my substance. Ah, I'm hungry...
