Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 232

232 Event Turns Up

I've started to see this game like a protagonist of an RPG, to enjoy it to the fullest with 'retiring' as my end goal.
Due to all the mess and trouble I have been dragged into. It wasn't fun at all because it was always a 'loss' for me by the end.
If I kept my old mindset and ran into another chain of 'problems', it would only thrust me into another spiral of 'unfun'. I've gotta sever that.
I'm going to accept whatever happens, perhaps things would change for good and I could finally live in peace from now on, but even if I come across a problem I just can't overlook, I'm gonna try to 'enjoy' it. That should prevent the whole thing into becoming a 'minus' to me at least.
I'm altering how I see and accept things on a fundamental level. Whether you can put it into practice may be hard as a human. But that resolve was immediately put to test at the inn the old man guided me to.

"Please! Would anyone please accept my commission? Anyone! You will be paid accordingly! I beg of you!"

That was the first speech I heard the moment I arrived at the inn. I wanna cry, there's really no escape from this fate, heck it's like I'll always get swallowed into this whirlpool whenever I go.

This inn is called 'Dragon's Back'. A place of repose for mercenaries. Combining both a tavern and an inn in the same building.
Of course, she's making the appeal in the tavern part where many mercenaries gather.
I parted ways with the old man in front of the inn, and this was the first thing that jumped into my eyes when I opened the door.

"Give it up. That geezer got a sharp tongue. There ain't nobody who's gonna take you up."
"He's got skill and his gear's good stuff fer' sure. But he shooed me away when I visited his store the first time."
"Yeah, yelling crap like, 'Yer' too green for that sword!', told him that's gonna put the wrong idea to his customers, guy gonna sell nuthin'."
"Then he'd say, 'Not my fault that guy died'."
"His stuff's cheaper than other stores yeah, but I ain't bothering going to bat for that geezer."
"Not like losing a blacksmith or two's gonna be felt to this kingdom anyway. Heck, nothing's gonna change for us. We just hafta go to other stores if he's gone."
"That geezer's gonna shittalk us even if we found him anyway."

"I only need an escort until the mine! Please anyone! Lend me your help!"

Judging from these reactions, it's about an old man blacksmith that's not popular with people. Standing in contrast to that is a girl who's desperately calling for help.

(Ah, I'm guessing this one's is about the plea of a girl worrying over her grandfather's well being? Another classic.)

Yes, I won't deny that I quickly liken this to something out of a game in my mind. In fact, I wanna ask how else is one supposed to take this?
As that thought vaguely crossed my mind, I headed for a counter in the corner and asked the clerk there.

"I'd like to book a room for a night. How much?"

Monetarily, I'm flush with cash. The fund I got from Eltros is in excess. Not to mention the gold I took from all the bandits I took care of.
I can easily afford expensive inns as long as I don't go overboard.

"That'll be two silver and three copper coins. Dinner is served on the first floor as you can see, so it's not included. Breakfast costs you four pennies surcharge."

I paid the fare and hurriedly went upstairs next to the counter.

"Your room's the furthest in the back to the right upstairs. Oh and breakfast can be taken anytime before noon."

I raised my right hand to signal the clerk and walked up to my room as indicated.

231 Turnabout

I strolled aimlessly as I took in the sights.
Most things I saw was novel to me.
Can't be helped, I am a country bumpkin unfamiliar with the world after all. It's only been about a month since I left my rustic quiet village in fact. Of course I know nothing.
Someone who still lacks a lot like me thinking he could live 'ordinarily' in this world was really foolish. Not when I can't even understand common sense and sense of value of this world.
And the result was a total failure, piqued the princess's interest.
I must have looked like a clueless hick as I was resolving on changing my perspective on the middle of the street.
And of course some thugs caught on to that. Trying to broaden my horizon by looking at everything backfired.

(I can't be 'ordinary' yet. But I don't want to stand out. With my 'power' that is. What other option do I have then?)

"Oy! Whaddya think yer' lookin' at huh!? Did you just glare at me? That ain't gonna do, ain't gonna do at all."

Why do these types exist everywhere anyway? Template? No, it's pretty much hall of fame now.

"Somebody! Save me! Call the guards please! I'm being mugged! Anyone please!"

I shouted out loud before they could get close. Then I kept repeating it endlessly.

"B-bastard! Shut the hell up! Shut it! Oy! Are you deaf?!"

The thug yelled. But I refuse. No stopping this train.

(Even if I stand out now, I'm leaving this kingdom soon anyway, unlike these guys who should be living here. Have at it, bask in all the attention. See how well it goes for you.)

To me the shame would be temporary, but these local thugs would carry it with them everywhere so long they stay here.
My shouting was super effective. I have my face hidden under my hood unlike these thugs so the longer this goes on, the more attention they draw.
Seems like it's a group of four thugs, as more and more people gather, all kinds of glances are being directed at them.
With little to no fun activity around, everybody who flocked here seemed to be the busybody type.

In the center of the crowd are me and the four thugs. They have swords hanging on their waists and leather protector on their chests. They're probably mercenaries.
I saw few people with similar equipment when I went to Mercenary Guild with Aryl, so it must be true.

"You bastard! What're you playing at!"

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"

"Shut up! Shut yer' trap!"
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
I apologized even louder than the yelling thug.

"I just left my village, I don't know anything! Please forgive me if I offend you! Please! Please! I beg of you please!"

I proceeded to prostrate myself. I bobbed my head up and down while shouting, 'Please forgive me'.
There's no stopping me. It's like I can't even hear them.

(I call this the prostrating strategy! The guards should show up after hearing the commotion. I just gotta buy time until then.)

How were I able to so easily do all this? That's because I don't accept this world.
You live your life through your own subjectivity. But to me everything is hazily between objective and subjective.
Yes, this is not my world, this isn't me. Therefore, it's got nothing to do with me. I can do anything.

My mindset had a complete shift again after coming here and running into another set of fantasy, hero? blade of light? a gigantic castle?
I'm no longer able to perceive myself.

(Might as well enjoy it then yeah? How about just living life to the fullest until I achieve my end goal?)

My previous way of thinking had always led me to loss, the frequency of getting into trouble was just too high. It's been nothing but minus, so painfully obvious.
Then all I need to do is to turn that mindset around. It's the Egg of Columbus.
By doing so, I can act unlike my usual self.

The thugs seemed to feel disgusted at me who kept repeating like a broken toy, they looked at me like I'm a filth and yelled their way out.

"Oy! Move outta the way! Get away! Tch! What a waste of our time..."

An old man came up to me who kept apologizing even after the thugs left.

"Hey, it's okay, it's all right now. Those guys are gone already."

I stopped prostrating at once and stood up like it never happened.

"Ladies and gentlemen. I beg your pardon for this ruckus."

I bowed at the crowd. And made a plea.

"I have just arrived in this kingdom and have no idea left from right. I would like to stay at an inn, does anybody know of a nice one?"

The crowd was taken aback by my complete change of demeanor.

"...Hahahaha! You got us good! Interesting! Come, let me take you there myself!"

It's the old man who approached me.
Seeing that, the crowd dispersed at once each with their own impressions, 'He sure got them', 'That was funny', 'Guy's got guts.'

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 230

230 Meat Buying

In a word, it's a magic beast meat. More 'material' than ingredient.
I'm guessing it's from that magic beast rampage at the empire.
Just like how all kinds of magic beast materials get to become gear, weapons and medicine, this Great Boar meat must be a high class ingredient. Kinda like in the world of 'Tori**'.
As I was thinking that, THUD, a lump of meat, no a thick slice of steak was put on my table.
It's the menu I ordered. The limited time one from the promotion.

"That's gonna be two silver coins. Thanks for your patronage!"

Looks like you pay when your meal is ready. A bit unusual, or maybe paying later is unique to Japanese people?
But it didn't take me a second to pay, not with this tasty looking lump of meat before my eyes. Dunno if two silver coins are too pricey or not.
I asked the server who brought my meal for additional order.

"May I have another one of this dish wrapped for a take out? I'll pay extra for the trouble. Can it be done?"

"Oy oy, I mean that ain't hard... but y'know, you gotta come to our diner if you wanna eat our food, that's the custom 'ere."

For some reason this burly macho server seemed hesitant.
I tried to solve this with money. Two silver coins on the table with extra five copper coins.
This server must be quite a penny-pincher seeing as he went all smile as he nabbed it, 'Thanks for your patronage!'. Despite saying it was a custom or something, his attitude saw a complete turnaround when money gets shoved on his face.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"Okay then, thanks for the meal." he went back to the kitchen unknown if he heard me.

Now then, the verdict for the meat itself; it rivaled the best steak in Japan. No, probably even tastier.
Their promotional line was no lie. It's cheap for what you get. Heck, I thought it was too cheap even.
The outside is well seared yet the inside has had enough heat transferred into, my knife cut through it surprisingly softly.
It melts in my mouth and fills it full of flavor and juice.
The more I chew the more it spreads seemingly endlessly as I swallow it.
The right amount of salt adds to the flavor instead of overpowering.
And the end comes too soon for this bliss when I come back to my sense. It even makes me wonder how my belly could fit that much volume.
My hunger vanishes along with the meat as I get wrapped in a sense of euphoria.
I never experienced anything like this even in my past life. It made me fearful.

I would sometimes come across people who unabashedly yelled, 'To life is to eat!', out loud. I could finally get them now, they must have got that inclination after experiencing this kind of sensation.
I didn't need to but I ended up getting them. Even though I'm not a glutton.

I left the diner after I had my fill. With a steak take out.
If you ask what this take out for, it's a gift for Chimera who did (?) most in the matter this time.
I don't see it right now, but it's sure to show up out of nowhere when I least expect it and this is for that time.
The steak is wrapped in something like paper inside an ivy-like basket on a plate.
With that on hand, I walked around the main street while taking in the sight and looking for an inn for tonight.

All without knowing about yet another trouble waiting for me at the inn I found.

229 *** of Solitude

Now then the way back is super simple. It's literally a straight path.
Walking straight out of the castle gets me to the main street, which is another straight road to the gate.
Initially I was planning to start over in this kingdom and yet here I am now heading for the gate.

(Oh yeah, I left Chimera again. Or more like, it sure was quick at turning invisible.)

As my head was filled with pointless thoughts, I focused on what to do now.
First, a review is in order. I've largely washed my hands off the royal family problems. Princess, the PM and their friends can take care of the rest now.
The castle will definitely be thrown into chaos as the princess undergoes class change into a 'Queen', I should be able to stay in this kingdom for a while. But the moment I see the earliest sign of them looking for me, I'm gonna run away pronto.
Well, I should have plenty of time until then though, the princess probably can't afford to mind me as she piles up achievements anyway.
She's pretty much guaranteed to accomplish stuff nobody would complain about. The PM and his friends are capable people after all. With them on her side and no opposition, the end result is crystal clear.

(Ah, what was that plump minister all about anyway? I saw the guy passed out foaming by the mouth when Chimera came out.)

I had no idea that was a minister whose sole job is to be a 'clown'. Can't blame me there. How would I know what those politicians are thinking.
All the more politicians in a fantasy world based on medieval Europe, there's just no way a mere commoner could even hope to imagine all the intricacies.

I pushed aside all pointless thoughts and began planning my next step.
But first, gotta fill my stomach to clear my head. Meal is important. Also, you can gather info in taverns and such.

"You can't fight on an empty stomach. This is no battlefield though. Now that I'm here, might as well have a taste of Kingdom's local cuisine."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
I can't help myself having these monologues. I am lonely. There are two possible ends for people who spend a long time on their own.
Either, 'Cease to speak', or 'Speak to themselves as a distraction.'
Apparently I'm the second type. I've always been accompanied by someone thus far. No denying that. My family at my village, then Aryl, Eltros, elven attendants, Chimera at the empire and then the princess here. I count Chimera even though it's a magic beast. It seems to understand my words, it being able to react is huge.
However I am 'alone'. In solitude. Due to me being an irregular in this world.
I almost forgot, but that fact would never leave me. For as long as I'm unable to come to term with this world, I live in solitude.
Living for my own sake may be a lonesome thing, but that's the only way I know how. Because there is nothing in this world I 'want to do'.
People may call it a despair, but it's not like I've got a choice but to keep walking forward. The reason for my recluse life plan.

I got to the main streets where many people are promoting their stores.
I asked a gatekeeper when I was having a monologue earlier. He suggested me to go to the main street for meal.
It goes without saying he commented on my black hair, 'That's pretty rare', he smiled wryly as I left. Gatekeepers are bound by their duty to protect public order. He must have called out to me for that reason. But that soldier sure is nonchalant about it. No, everybody who talked to me had the same attitude. Despite saying, 'unusual', there was never a nuance of 'suspicious' in their words.
They're quite placid, or you could say they have no sense of crisis. But what occupied their mind was probably, 'no point in dwelling over it'. As long as it doesn't bring them trouble, the matter is only good as a topic of conversation. A perfectly normal attitude to have.

"Come on in, come on in! Have a feast at our diner! Today's special is limited time meat! We only have little left! Feast your eyes on this Great Boar meat smeared with plentiful sweet lard! Witness it transform into mouth melting tender meat by the hand of our master cook! But wait there's more! The richness that leaves a lasting impression! You'd want to savor it forever! Swallow it! And once it passes by your throat and settles down in your belly, who knows when you can have another! We guarantee no regret! Come now, those who wish to feast on this bliss, get behind me! To the 'Belly Less Diner'!"

That unique promotional yell caught my attention. Not to mention that naming sense for the store.
I couldn't help but smile at the description of that meat.
I walked through the door before I realized.
Somebody spoke behind me as I did. It's the lad who was doing promotion in front of the store.

"Welcome! Please take your time to enjoy the supreme bliss!"

228 Memories Inside Story

"What are you...?" the princess talked back. Man, I'm kinda fed up with all these 'what' thrown my way.
Nobody seems to notice that here. The PM added to her inquiry.

"Princess Katrina is known for her haughty and arrogant attitude as well as her unwillingness to listen to other. I confirmed her infamy myself when I welcomed her to this castle... What are you plotting?"

A shame that he's getting wary of me again. I'm gonna have to explain stuff once again now.

"Aah, better to hear it from the horse's mouth. Princess, tell him everything."

"...Very well. I have been taught by my mother to play the part of a fool to trick my enemy. Thus I have been manipulating the impressions people have on me in order to defend myself even before coming to this castle."

The PM seemed to understand what was going on just from that, he shared another inside story.

"I remember now, your mother was a concubine. She was targeted by the queen and almost lost her life from the attempt. She managed to escape and left the castle. I recall I sent a contingent of soldiers to help her. She was a wise and clever lady. The queen did not fancy that. Thus I lent her my aid. Although I kept my identity strictly in the dark."

The PM narrated like it took him back. So the attack was due to some worthless envy. The truth is dull at time.

"Her wisdom truly was worthy of respect. Her biggest misfortune was having the king, that garbage take a liking on her. I just had to help her when I couldn't stand watching it anymore. Every single mistresses besides her was the same trash who cared nothing but to get ahead in the ugly race. It's like a gathering of carrion scavengers."

Vultures of a feather flock together huh. Guess their children take after their parents too as PM said, beyond saving.

(That's exactly why I recommended the princess. Just gotta hope this settles everything. Though people not involved in this whole debacle are going to raise a ruckus for sure.)

It should be no problem to the PM who managed to take control of the castle, but it's for sure going to be a source of more worry. All thanks to my recommendation.
Other members of royalty would have protested if they heard it here.

"We're getting nowhere if we keep reminiscing, so let me propel us forward, this princess is pretty capable, you know? I mean she even managed to rejuvenate the village she was handling so quickly."

"Are you talking about that village the princess forcefully took charge of? I believe today would be her second visitation. And you're saying it already bore fruit?"

'Oy, what were you thinking princess?' or so I kept that to myself. That ain't something a royalty does. And it sounds like she rushed headlong on her own too.
How long was the period between first and second visitation anyway? I don't know how much materials, goods, tools and manpower they provided her, but since the princess said the village is okay now, I don't think she's lying.

"Go ahead and check it yourself later. So yeah about the princess, she's been studying all this time and she's got the caliber of a ruler I say. Girl's got spunk and prudence too, me think she's gonna be a great queen, see?"

Charging into this castle and leading the negotiation to guarantee her safety was all the princess's initiatives. Well, she's got the luck on her side too.
My 'power' only helped bring her here. All the chaos that then led to not giving them time to think it through came after.
How the princess believed in that and decided to head straight for the throne shows her courage and caliber. I see the making of a monarch in her.

"We shall send an investigation committee along with an additional delivery of goods... I will personally take charge of assessing the princess."

This PM is pretty good too with his quick response. Innate talent as well as all the hardships he went through must have resulted in his present capability. Ironic it may be.

"I am well informed on the goods needed. Please allow me to be part of the committee."

The princess resigned to her fate or perhaps she saw this chance to take a step toward her 'dream', she started making an appeal.

(Hmm, I guess this matter is pretty much off my shoulder then, no? Now, I just gotta find the right time to...)

The ministers still in audience chamber began making their moves.
Assigning staff and moving toward conference room. Discussing and reporting to each their posts.
It's the start of a project. Eh what was it again? Darkest before dawn?

I waited until they all took their eyes off me and used 'Acceleration' to skedaddle out of the place.

227 Hard to Convince, but, Reality is Harsh

"Oy, what did you just say...? What does that mean?"

The prime minister couldn't process this, he asked me back in agape.

"Exactly that, no string attached. You've got nothing to worry about anymore on that."

I took a glance at Chimera but it was nowhere to be seen.
Must have gone invisible and off somewhere. It's as if it was never there.
However, the tattered Arcane Blade, or rather, Hero (lol), lying on the ground is proof that Chimera was indeed there.
He's still twitching so he's not dead at least.
The PM who also turned his sight at Hero spoke after quivering.

"Where has that otherworldly gigantic magic beast gone to...?"

Having the most dreadful being he ever saw suddenly vanishing must be every bit as scary.
I ruminated a bit whether to answer that.

"Probably left after it's got its fill? Putting that aside, do you believe me?"

Likely not. I wouldn't if I were in PM's shoes. I mean I get it. There's no way he could have simply accepted when someone suddenly blurted that the single biggest issue that propelled all the upheavals has already been taken care of.
Not unless it's an intel he can trust. On top of that, the one who brought the news is a suspicious man of unknown origin, how could you trust that.

"I do believe you. I do not see any reason why you would tell lie after everything that has transpired thus far."

The one who readily understood the importance of this info was the princess.
The PM put on a bitter look when he heard her. This matter was what compelled him to remove the king, naturally he couldn't just say, 'Thank goodness'.
Even if the issue is no more, the mess from banishing the king still hangs over.
The problem simply transfers over to another spot.

"Well I don't actually care whether you believe me or not. What are you gonna do to the king? I'm sure all these bigwigs here are 'related' so your words hold power over them, PM-san."

I thought the princess would butt in here, but she kept her silence.
I was sure she'd press on the PM to release the king, yet she just stared at him.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
(Well, that king's beyond saving if what the PM said is true after all. Pretty clear it is seeing these ministers' expressions and body language.)

"Is the king even alive? Is he dead?"

I tried asking the important question, the PM sounded like he still had grudge as he replied.

"We have him confined while keeping him just above starving without dying. He still has some use alive. However, he'd scream non stop if he had stamina."

That was a reasonable enough treatment for a VIP, but you could tell most of it stemmed from all his pent-up resentment.

"...We were currently brainstorming to choose the next king. What an ironic twist of fate. After some scrutiny we have established that the princes and the princess are all uneducated lowlifes. Fruit never falls far from the tree, truly."

Birds of a feather flock together huh. But we also have an ugly duckling here.
I tried to give a pointer.

"A suggestion if you will. How 'bout making the princess over there a 'Queen'?"

226 Serious

Something didn't click right with me. After watching that, this PM seems to be a serious straitlaced individual.
This episode he had was just because his fuse was finally lit up. Even if it was a fuse to a huge bomb.

(The PM ordered to have the princess killed? No... What was it again? Earl Orc Rye? Solo offense huh.)

The one who sent assassins the princess's way was a noble belonging to the PM's 'faction'. The guy may be in his faction, but that doesn't mean he's been reporting everything he does to the PM.

"PM-san, you were after the princess's life weren't you?"

"...? Quit with that nonsense. She may be that scumbag's daughter, but such thoughts never even crossed my mind."

"But those five knights went in for the kill though."

"I never gave that order. I received a report of the princess heading for this audience chamber while blowing away guards, thus I ordered them to peacefully bring her here, or to detain her if that's not possible."

"...So PM-san, you absolutely have no intention to get the princess killed."

"Oy, what does that mean? What are you talking about?"

"The princess overheard a talk about replacing the throne y'see. I thought that was the reason you were after the princess. I mean the guy we captured let that name out, uh Earl Orc Rye?, of his mouth and all."

"...I have Oaklay gather all the good for nothing nobles under his wing and crush them in one go."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"What if the princess saw him making an illicit deal or some sorta scheme....?"

"You're saying Oaklay realized that and made an attempt on princess's life."

The PM put his palm on his forehead as he muttered, 'Every single one of them...'

"So PM-san? Weren't you worried when you found out about the princess assaulting this castle? I mean she's known as this arrogant haughty princess."

I tried asking straight. I mean the first thing she uttered here was, 'Where's the king?' after all.

"Regardless of her personality or what forces she controls, there is simply no reasonable chance for the king to be rescued anymore. All the more for a lone powerless girl who has just been called to the capital recently."

"The princess has no chance of saving the king. As in zero. It's not even worth entertaining huh."

That was it. Everything finally clicked together.

"PM-san. This clinches it, that Oaklay guy's been distorting your orders."

"...Haa. Somebody, go and crush Oaklay right away. It is a blunder of mine. As it turned out he was one among the garbage himself. Forgive me."

Four ministers started walking and left the chamber after given that order.
I think the princess has finally gotten her 'guarantee' for real this time. I'm sure there's nothing more they missed nor will this turn into an armed uprising.

"Now then, let's get to the core of the matter."

I forcefully set us back on track after getting sidetracked so much.
The PM looked perplexed.

"Is there more? ...The empire's weapon of war, is it?"

"Sorry for getting off track before finishing that."

The PM looked quite refreshed after his outburst earlier.

(He must have it bottled up tightly. Was it really a good thing for him to let it all out here, or not.)

I feel a bit sorry to the PM knowing what I'm gonna say is putting more burden to him.

"The matter with that weapon of war at the empire has been dealt with. It's a non issue now."
