Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 181

181 Nothing to It If It Doesn't Hit

Since I was planning to run away, I barely managed to dodge that first strike.
The whip was heading straight at me moving on its own even though Daria herself wasn't budging.
I narrowly got into 'Accelerated' state and saw that the tip of the whip was right before my nose, sending a chill down my spine.

(Ugh, no pain please... especially not to please this genuine pervert.)

Everything within my cognizance can be dealt with. But I can't dodge attacks from outside my perception.
I may have this 'power' but I'm just still a common man. Though I've been managing thanks to my love of fighting games in my past life and good enough reflexes.
However, the tip of 'Whip' can exceed speed of sound. It's too late by the time you see it.
Had that strike hit, the battle would turn one sided on Daria's favor.
Not even me could endure attacks that exceed perceptions.
I'd probably fail to focus after that first hit from the pain.

(Now then... Serena mentioned about her using wind spirit magic to freely control the whip... then she should have another trick up her sleeve. Wind is 'Formless' after all.)

I braced myself now that I missed the chance to escape. Instead of 'Whatever', it's now 'Whatever happens, happens'.

===  ≠===  ====

"Why won't my whip hit even once!? What's going on here!"

Hundreds of whip marks are left in the surrounding area.

"Just who is this guy!? Dammit! Get hit already! It's just irritating now!"

I kept dodging Daria's whip by a hair's breadth despite her yelling.

"Aah, geez! I'm gonna use my special move and turn you into mince meat! Blame yourself for making me do this! Repent!"

There's a whip moving around all over the place helped by wind spirit magic, and then now a black stripe is shot out of Daria's fingertip.
A ghastly whip that tears through everything it touches.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
Are you familiar with water jet cutter?
Pressurized water shot out of a small hole that cuts things up. The water is mixed with abrasive material and can cut even hard metal. Or perhaps shaving it down is a more correct term.
This pressurized water slices with high speed, dense and super compressed energy.

This wind magic isn't quite that powerful and yet close enough.
The inside of this black stripe is full of trash, sand, rock particles, spinning at high speed to shave down most things.
I have no idea how fast it's spinning. But it should be capable of cutting up metal armor made in this world with its terrifying power.
Naturally anything softer would meet an even more gruesome fate against this.

And Daria is controlling this. She doesn't care if I die as long as it soothes her vexation. However.

"But how! How come I can't even graze him with this!?"

Daria whose blood rushed to her head out of irritation shot out the densest looking whip thus far.
She's obviously way over her limit as the firepower gets lowered every time she shoots.

"Hit! Hit! Hit dammit! This can't be happening! This shouldn't be happening!"

Her confident attitude gradually lost its luster alongside her wind magic whip that gradually stopped moving.
The black stripe, 'Gust of Wind' magic also dispersed.
Daria was breathing roughly with her shoulders going up and down before long.
She slumped down the ground and admitted defeat.

"...It's my... Lost."

Then she stood up and staggeringly walked back to the gate. Her back looked awfully small.
A lone man came out of the gate as she passed.

"Heya, Daria. He sure got you good huh? I've never seen a human capable of dodging attacks like that. That prowess far surpasses any of us, none of the remainder elves would be a match surely."

Apparently the elder still insists on having the rest of the elven warriors fight me even though they have recognized my strength now.

180 Not My Thing

(Oy, how far do you lot intend to crush my dream...)

"Your next opponent... is none other than me!"

What came out was a woman in a full bondage costume like some sort of performer.
She's even got a whip. Looking exactly like a bondage queen. My image of elves is utterly crashing down.
And naturally being an elf, the woman is beautiful with sharp eyes that really fit the entire thing.

On the watchtowers, different elves from the ones who cheered Gadd earlier cheered, some from women, 'Daria-sama! You're simply wonderful~!' and several from men, 'Forget about that guy, lash your whip on me instead!'.

(...'Onee-sama' elves huh... There's some genuine M too, what's up with you elves...)

"Nobody can escape my whip! Ah... I'm so excited to lash this whip of mine not on some random magic beasts, but a human in the flesh!"

(Oy oy, this all looks more and more suspects by the minute... This woman's as bad news as she looks...)

This female elf called Daria was doing a monologue with an enraptured face before she started rambling in excitement.

"Magic beasts are such a bore with their wailing! But you, surely you'll give me nice screams as you beg for your life, won't you? At least let out a nice one for me!"

(...This woman's a bona fide S, ah man...)

"That Gadd and his stupid muscles are so boring too! He's way too sturdy, 'That's it? Hmph! I don't feel nothing.' he said, oooh, can you believe that?! Say that again after you dodged my whip once!"

She's not stopping and even starts getting irritated on her own. She's also been observing me from head to toe multiple times.

"Compared to him, your body has no excess meat yet it's not all bones either, really tender, looking flesh... ufufu... fufufu..."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
She smiled darkly like a carnivore at me.

(She's seriously bad news! ...Get me outta here!)

The loudest alarm bell rang in my head. It's not because I can't win against her.
It's a 'Sense of Impending Crisis' all living beings have, telling me to keep away from her.
But just as I was about to run, Serena gave her advice at the most exquisite timing yet again.

"Daria is a master of whipcraft as you may surmise milord. By combining her mastery with wind magic, it is practically impossible to read the trajectory of her whip. Please be careful milord."

Listening to her made me lose my chance to run away.

"Come now! Entertain me as best as you can! I'll whip lots and lots of cute screams out of you."

As she said that, 'hyu!', a sound of cutting wind was heard.

179 Contest of Strength

How strong I am usually?
Though I don't know how heavy they were, I did carry those magic beasts here without even feeling the weight.
I'm able to control my strength when I'm not in 'Accelerated' state. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to lead a normal life.
But I've never gone all out. I mean you don't usually need to if you live normally.
I have an ideal opponent to test that out here. Nothing to lose from giving it a go.

(But if I ended winning against this Gadd guy, wouldn't that mean I well truly am a 'Monster'? That's just deflating...)

It's frankly tough to admit that I'm no longer just an ordinary man, but I prop myself up as it's important to know my limit. Bit too late for that anyway.
It's pretty clear I'm way out of ordinary after everything thus far.

"Alright! Let's have a lil' go then!"

Gadd opened his right palm and offered it to me. He's probably asking for a grip match. A pure contest of strength.

"Please take it easy on me. I'm not really into tightly grasping man's hand though."

As our hands interlocked, Gadd gradually increased his grip strength. But.

"I haven't started yet! Tell me if ya can't take it anymore, yeah? Imma let go right away. But try to keep at it till the end ya hear? Ya gotta entertain me."

Gadd kept increasing his grip strength as he said that, but I feel nothing at all.

(I can't feel a thing... This body's just way too crazy...)

Seeing me unfazed, Gadd raised his power the blood vessels on his forehead popped.

"Oy! Yer' pretty dang good aren't ya! Let's go with two hands then!"

Since he offered, I took it up.
With both our hands interlocked, Gadd looked towering over me.
The difference in statures is so huge it looks like I'm being attacked by a bear.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"To think you could stand against my power, interesting! Gonna go all out now! Imma power myself up with mana, make sure yer' ready or else yer' gonna get crushed, ya hear me?"

This Gadd elf seems quite gentle. Considering how he kept warning me to be careful, guy must be an attentive older guy you can rely on.

(And here I am completely unaffected by this aniki going all out... Just how high is this body's specs...)

Even outside 'Accelerated' state, this 'Normal' state body is abnormal. Honestly, I don't think a being like that should exist in this world. And that being being me, I really don't think anyone needs this much power just to live.

"Can't believe ya could withstand this! But simply enduring my power ain't gonna do! You come at me too!"

"Well sure, I'll go at it a bit then. Slowly."

I'm able to control my strength when I'm not in Accelerated state.
I put more strength in my hand little by little. Also a bit on my wrist to counter attack.

"Guh! Guuuuuuuh! Uoooooooooo!?"

Gadd loudly groaned in surprise. The elves who are cheering for aniki on the towers also all commented, 'Aniki, but how!?'

The table has been turned. Gadd got cornered so much he fell down to his knees.
I relaxed my strength and undid my grip. The match is already over.

"Are you for real... Why'd anyone need strength this excessive... Normal is just fine..."

I couldn't hide my surprise at this discrepancy. Elves are stronger than humans. Gadd whose pure physical strength stands on top among elves, and me who easily subdued him like a baby.
I'm not complaining at winning. But this makes for another new reason to hit this world's god.

(Why am I not 'Normal'? Damn it...)

"Well dang! Ya got me good! I admit defeat! Heck, you never went all out, did ya? There really is always someone better out there eh! Well that makes tempering this body all the more worth! Gahahaha!"

Gadd turned around and went back while looking jovial, 'Got a new top to aim for, heck yeah!'
His broad back makes any feeling of bitterness vanish.

(Well, what's done is done, no point in lamenting over it, gotta stay positive. Guess I gotta try reverse my line of thinking...)

As I was thinking that, my next opponent came out in Gadd's place.

178 Unexpected

My image of elves is that of 'Calm', 'Pastoral', 'Harmony with nature', 'Archers', and 'Intellectual'.
And yet everything is going in the wrong direction.
Heck, it's like I'm in a battle manga, I've no idea what's what anymore.

(What is this world if not survival of the fittest. Or so that full body bandaged samurai said...)

Despite insisting that they shouldn't mingle with the 'Black Clad', the elven elder is still willing to listen to me if I demonstrate my power because they have no idea how to deal with the dungeon core.
Only those with strength are worth listening to, or something. Hubris of the elves who put strength above all else. But they're not wrong. They're far stronger than humans after all.

I guess this comes with the territory since the resident elves in this village have never seen me fighting.
All of this only happens because of my decision not to flaunt my power.
Enormous power like this attracts attentions of people wanting to make use of it, for both good and bad deeds, it's best to keep a low profile.

"Ah, crap, I want to escape this reality. What a pain in the butt... I just wanna go and leave everything behind..."

"Milord, we beseech you to save us with your mighty power. I have tried my utmost to persuade the elder, but he will not budge. However, us elves will succumb before the existence of raw strength. I believe showing off your power is the best method."

"I just want to negotiate. Yet they're not even willing to lend an ear. I'm not even demanding anything outrageous..."

The word succumb is way overboard. But the six elves I saved did succumb on their own volition.
There wasn't even a 'Negotiation' as they unconditionally agree to everything I say. Just goes to show that this is the best method, I guess.

(But I don't want to add more obligations! I've calculated everything so far just to get them off my shoulder! What if it piles up instead?)

I've left the dungeon core in a far away spot. Chimera is housekeeping the thing.
It seems to understand my words seeing as it 'Meow'-ed back.
According to Serena, the core absorbs and emits a huge amount of mana.
That seems to be akin to breathing to Chimera, it was in a good mood when I told it to watch over the core.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
I looked up at the sky and muttered.

"I just wanted to live a life of someone below mob... Limiting my contact with other people to absolute minimum..."

The gate opened up and one man came out. Short spiky hair looking like a refreshing handsome guy. But his body is that of a beefy muscular elf who introduces himself loudly.

"The name's Gadd! I bear the strongest muscle powers among all warriors! Imma make a crumple out of a scrawny human like ya!"

(...Macho? My image of elves is fast crumbling down...)

This Gadd guy started doing a one man bodybuilding show. He's taken off his coat, half naked now.

"Aniki! I'm losing it!" "Your bursting body is too dazzling!" "The carving of your life on your back looks so somber!"

Apparently there are some fans of Gadd in the watchtowers. It's like I'm watching a real bodybuilding show from earth.

'Front Double Biceps' 'Side Chest' 'Most Muscular' 'Back Lat Spread'.

I'm getting a headache at all these poses he showed off in succession.
Adding to that is Serena's commentary from the sideline.

"Gadd is said to possess the highest physical prowess of any warrior in history. But his strength is nothing in comparison to milord's might."

Honestly, I'm not happy with that praise.

(Hm? Wait? I can use this to test that out.)

I recalled one thing I'd like to try with this chance, lessening the headache a bit.

"Alright, let's go with a test of strength then. I don't care if I lose."

177 Discussion and Gambling

I had Serena go on ahead to inform the village of our coming.
They're gonna turn me down at the gate if I don't make an appointment.
They already did once though.

(Wonder if I could smoothly present this thing? They've gotta be willing to hear me out first... So I guess not?)

If what I have in mind is right on the mark, it should go well.
I don't want to rely on it but I've experienced just how deeply fantasy-like this world is.
Doesn't that mean my wild imagination is actually spot on? I have a rough plot thought up in my head.
And now I can only hope the dice rolls on my favor.
Like gambling, betting everything on luck. But keeping around this mana crystallization, a Dungeon Core of unprecedented size would be suicidal of me.
Gotta win this bet. The biggest barrier is convincing the elven elder with eloquent words.
Nothing more suitable than elves to push this huge matter on. If I can't get them to supervise this massive burden, it's definitely gonna develop into an even bigger problem in the future.

(Now then, looks like we've arrived at the gate. Will he be there to welcome us.)

I told Serena to tell the elder about what happened in the cave and that I have an important matter to discuss with him.
If he thinks this Dungeon Core is an issue for them too, it won't be weird for him to wait at the gate.
But if he kept his attitude from yesterday and insisted that the core has nothing to do with them, I'd have lost my bet.
Aside from all that, if he feels the slightest bit of gratitude to me who solved their problem, he should at least turn up.

However, none of my guesses was correct. Since Serena was the only person waiting at the gate.

(Ah man. Back at first step huh. Well, guess that's that. What now?)

As if waiting for me to feel down, a hoarse voice called out.

"You there, Black Clad, halt! We can establish a conversation from where you stand."

The voice came from a tower. By an old wrinkled elf.

"Milord, that is our elder. He is willing to listen but not let milord in, as such he has opted to wait at that tower."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

"Ah, nice to meet you mr. elder. I am grateful you could spare your time."

"...I wish to ascertain your strength. I may hear you out once that is done. According to Serena, the ones who defeated Goblin King were none other than us elves."

"Elder! What are you saying now? Without milord and his wisdom, we couldn't have possibly defeated that Goblin King so swiftly! And that's not all...!"

"I get it, Serena. That's precisely why. He must prove his strength. A human who should be below us solved the crisis and even saved you lot. However, I have yet to witness this human's unshakable 'Strength'. Elves are one with nature. Therefore one must first demonstrate their strength before words."

"I wanna end this quick though? What do you want me do?"

"It's quite simple. You are to fight against five of our strongest warriors."

Okay, this is really going in the what a pain 'Whatever' direction.

(Why does this template development keep ambushing me anyway...?)

I could feel my face gradually turning expressionless as things developed on their own.

176 Crushed Zenan

"Ah, waitasec. Nature's call, gotta go."

Just as Zenan drew his sword vigorously, I nonchalantly said that.
Now that I'm full after meal, the urge came rushing in.

(This guy's definitely gonna make this longer than needed, gotta do my business now when I still have chance.)

===  ===  ===

I was regretting getting too worked up over this insignificant man.
He dared to leave right after I drew my sword and said 'Come at me!'
And that's not all. He left his sword in its sheath when he came back.
This guy's making fool of me. I must not stand to this.

"Bastard... What are you plotting..."

I blasted my full bloodlust at him. An ordinary human would have fainted bathed in it.
Yet this guy is acting normally as if 'Something like bloodlust does not exist'.

"Losing your cool over a trifling matter, guess that's what you amount to."

That almost made me fly into a rage. But it had the opposite effect, calming me instead.

(This man must be attempting to rile me up in order to make an opening... Cunning indeed.)

Even though elves have far a superior physical strength than humans, a technique-honed hit could still prove fatal to us.
I shan't let him land a single blow on me. Otherwise, it will without a doubt get to this man's head.
A moment of carelessness could mean life or death in battlefields.
I must keep my guard up and avoid any hit at all cost. Thus I remind myself.

"Hmph! Your cheap provocation is fruitless. You shan't see me leave the slightest bit of opening."

"Ah? Sure you can say that after dropping your sword?"

After hearing those words, I felt something off. 'Thud', I heard the sound of a heavy object falling on the grass below.

"!?"

My sword has fallen off my hand without me realizing. It cannot be. I have been focusing on this guy all this time. I should be fully on alert, mind and body.

(Wha! What? How and when did I drop my sword!? Wait! This slight numbness on my hand...?)

It simply cannot be. This numbness feels familiar. But how do you explain that happening again now.

"Oh, looks like I'm getting the hang on controlling my strength. Alright. Pick up your sword. Or what, you wanna go bare handed?"

"What manner of trickery have you done? You must be using one. Truly fitting thing to do by a coward such as you."

I never let my eyes off the man while I picked my sword.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"The hell you're going on about. You didn't even notice me knocking your sword. It was a head-on action y'know? There ain't no trickery anywhere. And besides, if it were really one, you failing to see through that only shows your ineptitude."

He got a painful point, but there will be no next time. I take a stance with my sword, facing him straight. This should let me deal with anything.
An instant later, my sword fell off my hands. Numbed again.

(How!? How is this possible?! That guy hasn't moved a bit! And I should have perceived when he knocked my sword!)

"Now then, you should realize the gap between us, would be great if you stop making trouble for me in the future. What do you say?"

"Bastard... What did you how..."

"You think I'm gonna tell you? Just kidding. I just did and you forgot already, are you going senile, man. I walked up to you and knocked it down, all frontally. Didn't you see me doing that?"

"Cease your insult at once. There was nary a moment you as much as hit my sword. In fact, you never moved from where you are standing...?"

Something feels off. I have just admitted that I did not sense him hitting my sword. The same as admitting my defeat.
But that's not what's important. Why did I say that he didn't move?
Elves live with nature. We possess eyes that can track down prey we are hunting.
My eyes are urging me to look at what's off on the ground.
I focus there and realize what. Footprints. Man's footprints.
They're walking paced steps coming from his direction and then back.

"I-it cannot be... Unbelievable... Inconceivable..."

I felt terror at this fact. A phenomenon my eyes cannot perceive has just been proven by what's left on the ground.
I do not know why my eyes cannot catch the act. But the truth is on this earth.

"Alrighty, I'm gonna try to make the next one visible. You ready?"

Surprised by that, I quickly readied myself. Waist lowered, and legs relaxed ready to move out anytime. I point my sword tip at him.
I fully focus my eyes on him with sharpened nerves as to not miss a single movement. My mind won't overlook the quietest sound coming off this guy.

"What the heck is this..."

He suddenly showed up right before me with his sword lowered. All my concentration only brought me that.
The sword in my hand fell for the third time. No, it was dropped too when I clashed with Serena. This is the fourth time.
I wasn't focused on this guy back then? No that's not it. I am incapable of even perceiving him moving. That is the answer.

"How does one attain such power...? A mere human like you... Besting elves... No, I understand. I shall interject no more on whatever you do... Do as you wish."

===  ===  ===

Zenan uttered his defeat quicker than I anticipated. With a really bitter look on his face.

"Thought you were gonna hold out longer. That'd have taken us longer to get back to the elven village though, so I'm fine with you retiring early."

I'm feeling a bit dissatisfied since I was just about to grasp the knack on controlling Accelerated state, but considering the discussion I'm gonna have later, I consider this a win.

Ah, of course I put Chimera down and handed it to Serena when I did my business. No telling what's gonna happen if it's still there when I enter Accelerated state. Scary, scary.
Don't wanna see a splatter on my shoulder.

175 Provocation

We finished our lunch without any issue. Zenan ate with us.

"How could a campsite lunch be this luxurious... Just what?"

Zenan was stupefied by our mealtime. Starting from the time we were preparing food.
We bought a lot of seasonings in the empire. I'm sure you'd normally eat simple stuff like jerky and stiff bread deep in a forest like this. But not us.
Utensils, table, chairs, magic beast meat, salt, pepper, fresh vegetable soup, actual meal, all at the ready.
Then once we were done with aftermeal tea, they all got stored away.

"...How could you bastard afford to be so calm? In the first place, we should hurry and report this matter to the elder."

Zenan seems flustered. The biggest issue, Goblin King, has been taken care of so there's no need for that. All that's left to do now is the clean up. You won't come up with a good idea if you rush it.
But since we're not on friendly terms enough for me to tell him that, I replied with this instead.

"Man you're pretty forgetful aren't you. What did I say again? It was Serena's group who asked my help. This got nothing to do with the elven elder. I do what I want. I don't need anyone's permission if I deem it necessary. That's what it means to be free."

"Zenan, what have you even done to lodge a complaint to milord? This forest would have fallen into a crisis if not for milord's guidance. And yet I never heard a word of gratitude to him from you. You have learned nothing even after coming this far. What a disgrace to elves."

Zenan could only utter 'Guh!' when Serena reproved him.

I've put the Dungeon Core away from our resting spot. It's periodically pulsing blue lights. Quite beautiful.
Next to it, Chimera is blissfully grooming itself.

(Guessing that feels nice to mutated beings? It was jumping all over my shoulder in good mood when I came close to that core inside the cave after all.)

Chimera who usually flopped on my shoulder looked to be in high spirits near the dungeon core.
'Meow', looks like it had enough and came up to me.
It flapped its little wings as it floated up before perching on my shoulder like usual.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"Well, think that's about enough rest, let's get a move on."

"Oy, where do you plan on going? You cannot possibly mean to leave this forest, do you?"

Zenan asked while emitting a prickly aura. He's super wary of me, the sole person who can transport the dungeon core.
We tried other methods like tying the core with a rope and pulling on it. But it wouldn't even budge even though it's just floating in mid air.
Yet I can easily move it like it's not even there.
That fact means I'm the only one who can carry the core around.
There's no telling what kind of effects it would have on elves if they get close. No point in crossing that line right now.
I guess it's only natural to get suspicious of me when I mention being free.

"I'm going to negotiate with elves."

Everyone voiced their surprise in unison.

"Whaaaaaaaaa!?"

Zenan was the loudest. The other elves are quietly panicking.

"U-umm, milord?" "Eh? But why?" "With those people who treated us like that?" "Just what...?"
"I cannot fathom...."

Serena was the only calm one, standing serenely like usual.

"Milord's thinking is simply beyond ours. All we need to do is to follow him."

"No no, tell me what you think. Who can say if I overlooked stuff, you know."

"Just what are you bastard scheming!? I may have to cut you down here depending on your answer! I shan't show any mercy to those who intend to harm elves."

"Okay, I'm done with you and your constant nitpicking. So how about we prove who's on top here."

"Hmph! Underestimate me at your own peril! I won't lose to mere human!"

"After you lose, you have no right to complain on whatever I'm doing or saying, deal?"

"And my victory spells your banishment from this forest, forever! I know not how strong you are, but the only reason I dropped my sword back then was because I wasn't focused on you. You won't see me drop my guard this time. I shall crush you here!"

(Oh so that's been on his mind this whole time huh. Well doesn't matter. Let's smash his pride to pieces.)

This guy is way too simple to get this heated up from a mere provocation. Without knowing or trying to find out his opponent's strength, only looking down on them through sheer conceit.
I'd like to impart him the saying, 'Know your enemy and yourself, and you need not fear the result of a hundred battles'.
An impulsive guy who always nitpicks on everything is the most troublesome. If I don't shut him up here, he's gonna crash my discussion with the elder.

"The match is over only after one of us admits defeat. Is that fine with ya? No killing. This match's whole point is to know each other's abilities and to admit superiority. Agreed?"

Zenan laughed out loud when he heard me.

"Bring it on! I'll slice and dice your pride to pieces!"

"Good, you ready? Let's start then."
