Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 109

High Paladin

Around a dozen or so wolves all came charging at us.
Their stats are only slightly lower than us, but while a one-on-one fight is nothing to worry about, a direct clash against many altogether would be a toughie.

"Alma, don't try to take on multiple of them! Change the terrain with Spirit Magic and force them to engage one by one!"

"Got it!"

Walls created by Spirit Magic rose up all around me and Alma.
Save for one direction... I see, with this.
The wolves came in through the cramped entrance, but only one could fit each time.

『Guruaaaaaaa!! ...Gyahii!?』

They make for easy targets. We just gotta shoot Stone Bullets and Mana Stone Throw at the entrance.
Easier to hit than sitting ducks. OK, next one please, it's OK it's only gonna hurt a bit at first.

『Gyaaaa!?』
『Gabua!!』
『Gyain!?』

...What are they, lemmings? I'm lying if I say I don't feel conflicted at this.
But showing mercy might end up with us on the receiving end instead. We've got no choice.
In time, the wolves seemed to have wised up as well, they stopped getting in.
Well then, what now... Ooh?

『Guruaaaaaaaaaaaa!!』
『Gauaaaaaaaaaa!!』

Well dang, they vaulted over the walls in a surprise attack.
They must have combined High Jump and Air Step to achieve that height. These wolves are pretty ingenious with Skills.
Another wolf came in from the entrance at the same time. It's clear they're highly adept at hunting as a group.

"Hikaru! Please take care of the entrance--"

"Haaa!"

Before Alma could finish, I grabbed the entrance wolf with Remote Controlled mana and,

"Oraaa!!"

『『Kyain!!?』』

And swung the grabbed wolf with my Energy Control enhanced strength at another wolf coming from above, colliding them.
Got two wolves with one stone! Fuhaha!

"Eeeeh..."

"Alma, keep your focus, here comes another one!"

"U-un..."

I warned the twitching Alma to intercept another attack.
Come at us! I'll let you have a taste of this Wolf Sword (temp name)!

"Haa, haaa!"

『Gyaaa!!』

Alma dealt with the wolves despite her bewilderment.
She really can easily handle enemies around her level without breaking a sweat.

"Oraaa! Hmph! Toryaa!"

『G-gafu! Guruu!? Gyain!!』

Not losing to her, I swung around my new Wolf Hammer (KO'ed).
Seemingly shocked by their friends being used against them as a weapon, the wolves flinched every time I did.

"This strategy is super effective! Lots of folk must be adopting this--"

"Absolutely not."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

Oh ok.
But, this stuff is pretty legit you know?
I mean look, all those wolves are now reduced to only four, five left.

『Gyauuuaaaaaaaaaaa!!!』

Oh, the boss is finally making his move.
Well, it's not like he hadn't done anything so far.
He kept howling to instruct the other wolves or supported them with buffing Skills, but it looked like he finally figured that wasn't enough.
I could sense it's charging straight ahead along with its subordinate wolves, but they're not aiming for the entrance or above. They're ramming straight toward the Spirit Magic-created wall.
...No way.

『Garuua!!』

BOOOM!!

The thing just went and broke down the wall with Roaring Rush!
How bullish.

『Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!』

To top it off, he sent off flying slashes from his glittering fangs and claws.
Is this the fang and claw version of 'Mana Blade - Farslash'? Looks like they're gonna hurt a lot if they hit.
Alma bolstered her sword with 'Mana Blade Draw', an ability to reduce the blade's sharpness by coating it with mana, and used it as a mana shield.
I got through it as well, had my Wolf Shield (last one) to thank. My shield is done for now though. Good work, Wolf Weapon (?).

『Guruooooooaaaaaaaa!!』

"Uoooooooooooooooooo!!"

The boss wolf closed the gap while we were busy dealing with the flying slashes and attacked with its claws and fangs at tremendous speed.
It seems to use his Skill Ability at the moment of attack, allowing him to rival Alma's 'Mana Blade Gale' speed. I enhanced my senses with Energy Control, and blocked the attack with Mana Armor-clad limbs, but man this thing is pretty good at hand-to-hand combat.
Well, it still can't match Alma's speed when she uses Storm Sword and Qi Clad though.
Wait, this wolf just used Qi Clad at an interval, oh crap!

『Guooooooooo!!』

BITE! Boss wolf bit my right hand hard.
Even with Mana Armor, I would have suffered a serious injury if not for my HP buffer.
Then I'd be hemorrhaging massively, and likely dying in the process. The boss wolf would have likely won if it wasn't me he was up against.

But this is the end of the line. For you.

BAAAM!!

Activating Pile Bunker from inside the mouth.
Not even this wolf could withstand a direct hit from the insides as half of its head got splattered into pieces, instant death.
...I really can't let up against magic beasts over Lv30. Never would have thought it'd go for a bite.

"Are you all right, Hikaru?"

"I'm not. My clothes got a new hole torn open..."

"You're not hurt, that's good."

It's not. I don't have many changes of clothes.
I really have let all the level ups get to my head and act sloppy. Gotta pull myself together.
Wait, the remaining wolves came in from the entrance and started ramming at Alma at once.

"Alma! Behind you!"

"I'll be fine."

Alma readied her sword without turning around.

Splash splash splash SLASH

'Water' overflowed out of that sword and moved on its own as it reaped the wolves' necks altogether.
Eh, what did she just do?

"...W-what was that?"

"A new magic sword. I learned it with the Job Change just now. Looks like I've got more new Skills too."

A new magic sword!? Since when!

<<Magic Sword Lv3 Ability 'Oceans Blade' An ability that allows user to control a huge quantity of water around their sword, enabling area of effect attacks. Highly versatile for both offense and defense, each drop of water can be fashioned as a Mana Blade.>>

She must have leveled up from beating those wolves earlier!
Time to check her Stats out. Lemme see.

Uhyaa, her stats got some crazy boosts.
Not only her Attributes, her Skill growth is also pretty wild. The heck is Offensive Magic Lv8.
She's even got new Support Magic and Kempo Skills. Support Magic I get, but Kempo?

<<...Her Kempo proficiency saw an increase after the act of self defense from last time, thus the proficiency bonus conferred by this Job Change raised it enough for Almatina to learn the Skill.>>

Oh that. That really did a number huh, it was only a matter of time until she learned Kempo Skill...
My HP buffer would likely go puff if he used that vital kick boosted by Kempo Skill on me. Scaryyy.

Let's keep hunting for a bit more to check out her Skills.
...I'm happy for Alma, but I'm also feeling like I'm getting left behind with my lack of new moves.
The girls around me are all so strong, I might really turn into a sponge at the rate this is going...

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 380

380 Falling Behind

I had the underling talk while we made our way through the forest.
Apparently Linda is a tomboy who frequently visits the downtown. Making advantages of this, they took their time solidifying the plan and had an agent planted in Lolengus House bribed Linda's attendants under the table.
Once the feat was done, all they needed to do was to kidnap her out of public gaze. Irdis reported that the young lady went off somewhere when he took his eyes off her for a bit. Her attendants matched his story.
Then they simply brought her to a cave deep in a forest of the kingdom's old road that nobody uses. Extremely simple with no waste.

As for how Irdis got to this place. The underling was ordered to directly report to the House of Lolengus.
Yet only Irdis showed up. This needs an explanation.

"I went straight to Irdis at the mansion. I was free once I spoke the password then. Your order was so vague, the enslaved was free to interpret it as I did. Once I uttered the password and asked him to report to her father, my order was complete."

"Can you tell me what's going on at my house right now? They can't have not even sent a search party, can they?"

"Irdis only told Lolengus that he'd go fetch you before departing yesterday. They must have taken it as you playing around in the town. They prob only just started forming a search party last night or so."

Underling finished his explanation. In short House of Lolengus must be in an uproar now after our overnight camp. Even if they believe it's because their young lady spent a night fooling around, that in itself would be a huge issue.
There's also two ladies from different houses asides from Linda here. I asked the underling how that came to be.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"Those two are daughters of Kanedor's oppositions. We matched the operation day. Heard some real stuff went down. The fact that the search party hasn't found this place is proof how good a hiding spot it is. Kanedor musta controlled flow of information to sow chaos too."

And now it's clear the underling lied through his teeth yesterday. He's always been Kanedor's subordinate.
All the stuff about revolutionary army and corrupt politicians are just smokescreens, a decided upon lie.
The setting they'd say if they ever get caught.
So the connection between Kanedor and revolutionary army would stay hazy. This revolutionary army is nothing more than his tool to shoot down his oppositions.

With guys like that throwing his weight around, the federation's fate is sealed, isn't it? My image of the country collapsed.

"Father will never yield to that complete coward. Not even if my life is on the line. He's sure to work something out."

Linda voiced out her trust in her father. I brought her back to reality.

"It's good to hold on to hopes. It's your prerogative to have expectations as well. To believe in someone is beautiful. But that won't do us any good right now. At least not until we've gotten through this forest. We still far from the exit?"

You can't expect a young lady to swiftly traverse through a forest. There's even three of them.
We already had to take two breaks while maintaining a snail pace. It's only normal for common people to quickly lose stamina walking in this great nature and all its uneven footings. Hence we're not making a good progress.

Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 108

Offensive Reorganization

Hello, I'm currently at the Monster Prairie along with Alma, in a deeper area than usual.
Reina is resting at the inn. She wasn't in the best shape due to overworking yesterday, so we had a change of plan. Maybe I shoulda brought her fewer magic beasts.
Reina won't last if we keep the pace for another day, and other adventurers are starting to look at us with censuring gazes, so the leveling is now done in a two day rotation with me and Alma doing the leveling on the second day.

This hurts Reina's leveling pace, but apparently most people don't go on killing magic beasts every single day in the first place.
Exceptions being those who need money quick or those who have to level up quickly, but culling magic beasts is not only hard on the body but it's also very mentally draining, so normal people take a break for two, three days after a session.
...That revelation means Alma and me had been really pushing ourselves. We delved in that dungeon for five days straight and only took a break for the remaining two days and all.
That would be considered pretty standard in Japan but apparently it's a complete sweatshop in another world... No, I'm sure Japan is just weird, that schedule is an exploitation too.
...Wonder how the factory I worked at is doing now. Probably the same unpaid overtime hell as ever...

Apparently the grass growing on the ground change color the deeper you go into this prairie.
The spot where Reina had her leveling bout had lustrous green grass growing, while this spot we're at is flush with pea green grass.
Oh, I see pear-like trees. Let's grab some. Yummy.
The magic beasts here are mostly in late 10s, level-wise. Clearly above our usual spot.
They're nothing but small fry to the current me and Alma though. We barely get exp unless the beasts are at least over Lv20.
We came across more magic beasts as we went deeper, but they were out of question. Nowhere near good enough as training targets or for leveling.
It would have made for a nice training if it were the us just after Stampede. Power inflation is real.

The vegetation further changes color to yellow as we go deeper.
The presences of magic beasts also become much stronger. This must be the next area.

"Let's make this area our base of operation today. I sense magic beasts mostly around level 20 here, it's just right."

"Un, they should make for a nice warm-up."

She sees magic beasts over lv20 as warm-up huh. How indefatigable she's become.

"I'll reach Lv25 in a bit and then I can Job Change. I'm going to do my best."

"Ah, figured the next Job Change is at Lv25."

"Lv10 is still considered rookie, and Lv25 is where you're seen as a full-fledged combatant... Many adventurers seem to only have that going for them though."

"And that's why we've gotta work hard so we don't fall in the same pitfall. Now then wonder if there's any good beast around."

Nn, I sense some presences that fit close by, wonder which to pick.
Hmu, one of them is heading our way. Guess might as well start with this one.
Huh? Its speed and mana reading, feels like I know this from somewhere...
Wait isn't this a Jet Boar? Man that sure takes me back.
The last time we fought one, we had to resort to using a trap and struggled till the very end.
Yet I don't even feel the least bit threatened now. Well, it's a lesser magic beast compared to High Cave Bears after all.

"Hikaru, let me take care of that."

"Hm, are you gonna be okay... Of course you are. You've got Spirit Magic and all."

"I won't use it. Not because of conceit, I think relying solely on that is limiting my tactics."

"Do you now. But don't worry about that and just use it if things look dicey."

"Un... It's, here."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

『BUUGAAAAAAAAAAA!!』

A red boar is charging our way while roaring out loud.
Straight ahead, the very definition of rushing headlong without any gimmicks like Horn Rabbit's zigzags. The most obvious pattern there is.
However that's precisely why it boasts a tremendous amount of power. The thing will even uses 'Roar Rush' once it gets close enough, explosively boosting its attack power. Even the current me likely won't come out of that unscathed.

Alma used 'Quick Step' to zero in herself.
Looks like she boosted the ability with Energy Control, her speed was almost equal my Mana Flight.
The boar flinched when it saw its target coming for it instead, slowing down instead of using 'Roar Rush'.

"Hmph!"

STAB!

Alma didn't overlook that opening and used 'Mana Blade Gale' thrusting her Ogre Eater Shark Fang Sword in the boar's forehead.
This would have been the end if it were an ordinary magic beast.

『GUGUBUUAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!』

The boar roared angrily, refusing to die despite having a sword stuck on its head.
But we both knew this thing wouldn't die from this wound from our last fight.

BWOSH, a blue flame erupted from the boar's head.
The same tactic as before, she used 'Flame Sword' to burn the insides.
There's no electricity running on her sword this time so she's not gonna get scalded. The red boar's HP quickly depleted to zero, dead.

"...You really did it in without Spirit Magic."

"Un, I'm glad that it really feels like I've gotten stronger bit by bit."

I don't think you can call beating an opponent we barely scraped a victory against just a month earlier without breaking a sweat 'bit by bit' though.
Well, the same goes for me.

"...My level didn't increase."

"Well, there's plenty of magic beasts around, let's work on it piecemeal by piecemeal... And here comes a new challenger."

"...Un."

I sensed multiple magic beasts coming in our direction after Jet Boar was felled.
They must be going after its meat.
Judging from their four legs, body contours, and running speed, they must be wolves.
...Uwhao, on top of every single one being above Level 20, they've even got one leader-like wolf.

Oy oy, isn't this area supposed to be exclusively inhabited by Lv20s magic beasts.
Is this tough luck or just luck, running into a beast stronger than High Cave Bears.
I'm guessing one wolf in the pack evolved into that thing but instead of going into a deeper area, it couldn't let go of playing boss so it sticks around.
It's like when a high schooler OB punk keeps hanging out with a gang of middle schooler punks... Oh boy, that analogy makes this magic beast seem lame.

『UOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!』

Ah, it's as if the wolf inferred me thinking that and howled out loud to direct its pack here.
...Fine by me, come at me you wolf punks! I'll rehabilitate you personally!

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 379

379 No End in Sight

We spent an uneventful night of repose. The three ladies shared a tent, it might get a bit cramped in there. I had another tent all to myself in peace.
Linda ordered the underling to sleep in the cave.

(Haa~, who could've thought things gonna turn this complicated. When am I ever gonna reach the federation?)

I chose the old road from the kingdom cause I thought the journey would be a smooth one.
Events always crop up whenever I come across other people, hence why I picked a road less traveled, yet this was the result.

I drowsily got out of my sleeping bag and groomed myself.
I poured all the waste from the portable toilet into a hole along with the hardened waste sand before burying it.
Apparently this sand will naturally dissolve into nature. What a handy stuff. Good for Ecology and etiquette.

In the meantime, Linda woke up.

"Good morning. We will be in your care today."

I replied back curtly at her bowing, 'Morning'.
The two ladies were still sleeping so I started preparing our breakfast.

"Now then, this early in the morning, it might be hard to find a game. Hunting would take too long. So y'know? Mind if we settle with a wild plant soup?"

This is a rich forest. It's easy to make a healthy soup from all the readily available plants.
I'd have liked to make something more filling to get us prepped up for our forest trek, but there's only so much I can do about this.
Linda didn't object.

"We wouldn't even know how to provide for ourselves if it were only us. We're thankful we can even eat. We won't dare complaining."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
With that said, I headed for the forest right away. Going around all over the place looking for fruits as well, sweet ones if possible.
We can replace protein with sugary content instead. Good for energy.

The gathering was done in an instant. Well, the time I spent under Acceleration was about an hour.
But the world itself experienced it all in a literal flash.

"...I will not question anything anymore. You won't give me the time of the day anyway."

It must have looked like I produced all the wild plants and fruits out of thin air from Linda's perspective.
But I'm not explaining stuff. No point fussing over it. Waste of time. Nothing to be gained mulling over this 'power'.

The other two ladies got up while I was making breakfast.
I gave them their soup and explained our plan.
Of course I gave underling his portion as well. We need him to guide us to the highway, would be a problem if he passed out along the way.

"Our goal today is to reach the highway. From there, we will be traveling to the commercial city. I know someone I could ask to safeguard you ladies."

"...Okay. Going back to the federation now doesn't seem like a good idea. But I would like to send my father a letter informing him of my well being. Do you perhaps have a paper and a pen?"

"We'd be better off keeping this to ourselves. The important part is having both your fathers and Kanedor in the dark. Do you wanna live on? If the answer is yes then a third party is your best bet. All the better if it's somewhere far away and nobody's the wiser. Write your letters once you know you're safe. I'll deliver them personally."

The goal was supposed to be delivering these ladies to the safety of their houses, yet that goalpost is gradually shifting.
I'd like to course correct, but I just know that there's no way out of this.

(I'm probably stuck on this ride to the very end... But once I've reached that goal, is it really the end? Can't see it...)

Seemingly catching on what I was going for, the ladies looked at each other with serious expressions before nodding once.

Transport Leveling

Detecting magic beasts' life force readings, the hunt is on.
Most of the readings were that of Horn Rabbits, though there were biggish ones mixed in. Not just wolves, they're quadruped with more rounded bodies, are they pigs? Gotta get them too.
Well, I'll start with the rabbits mostly. Mixing in some wolves here and there.
Oh, found some close by. Wait for me, I'm gonna make you mine.

Several hours since then.
At first, the rabbit passed out during transportation because I was moving too fast, then it fled right off once it came to... I felt sorry for it, I overlooked that one.
There was no more problem once I lowered my speed from second rabbit on... Save for my clothes smelling like wild animals.
It was a simple routine of transporting rabbits (and some wolves) in between breaks and lunch. A bit boring I admit, but it's nothing I can't endure for Reina's leveling sake.

"Here comes another one~, Reina, your stamina and mana still looking fine?"

"Wheeze, wheeze, I-I'm OK, but my real stamina, is about to run dry..."

"Hikaru, let's stop for today."

"Hm, you're right. How many were there again?"

"M-more than 50..."

"Ooh, you've been going at it huh, Reina."

"How wouldn't I with you bringing in so many one after another, Kajikawa-san! You didn't even see the situation here and kept transporting more beasts, so I had to go up against multiple at once!"

"Err, uh that was for your training against mobs, I definitely didn't just miss how you were doing and I'm sorry I just wanted to throw new ones in whenever."

"You gave up making excuses and apologized midway through!?"

I mean she kept defeating those magic beasts while I was out looking for more anyway, it was never dangerous.
Eh, that's not the issue here? Sorry.

Once she defeated the last magic beast I carried here, she plopped down on the spot in exhaustion.
Lying face down on the ground while muttering, 'I can't move a finger...', guess I'll piggy back her home.
Kinda reminds me of that time I was training mana control with Alma, though Reina's pretty light and there's nothing touching my back... Is it just me or do I sense bloodlust behind me, I gotta keep that to myself, yup.
But it was all worth it, she's leveled up a lot since we first started.

...Isn't she getting way too strong?
This little girl shot up to Lv7 in just two days. Scary.
Her AGI, DEX, and PER even broke triple digits. The hell kind of Cheat Job is it.

<<Ninja Job puts emphasize on AGI growth, however her training in Mana Control has helped bolstering her DEX and PER as well.>>

Speaking of which, Alma's DEX and PER also grew way high ever since she started Mana Control training.
Guess that happens when you have to sense something your five senses can't and take control of it.

"Uuh, my body felt so heavy from all the fatigue. Have I really gotten any stronger...?"

"You're fine, you're speeding up at incredible pace. It should feel obvious after a good night rest."

"What's my Level now?"

"Base Level is at 7. Your Dagger Arts and Martial Arts Skills reached Level 2 too."

"...It is indeed fast. Abnormally so."

"Well, it's Kajikawa-san's idea after all. No way it wouldn't be abnormal."

"And what exactly do you mean by that, hey."

Stop saying it like I'm always coming up with the weirdest ideas. Eh, but isn't that true? I guess.. I guess?
Well, other people will have a hard time mimicking this method.
Even if the enemies are moving in a very simple pattern, countering foes whose Attributes aren't that far off you with a single thrust of dagger isn't at all simple.
The fact that she can easily do that routinely is mostly thanks to Energy Control.
To compensate her small stamina pool, she instantaneously boosts her Attributes at the exact moments the Horn Rabbits and Wolves go in for the kill.
She'd occasionally tests Dagger Arts Skills but ran out of mana soon due to her still small mana pool, however it was no issue with me and Alma refilling it.
She also mentioned how those magic beasts were far slower than Alma and me during our spars... I've been getting plenty of surprises seeing her reacting to my true speed lately.

This girl is talented for sure. Both Alma and Reina blossomed the moment they escaped their unfortunate environments.
...What special things do I have compared to them? I can't even publicly use my only original technique, Mana Flight.
Well whatever, rather than envying others, I should focus on finding out my niche.
So yeah, gotta finish our business at the guild and make dinner, one of the few niches I have. Wonder what to have for dinner today.

...Hm? I sensed mana readings of people from deeper inside the prairie.
Must be another party taking on culling commissions.
...Maybe we should greet them or something. But I wanna return quickly.
Forget it, they might have the wrong idea if they saw me piggybacking Reina, gotta get outta here before then.

We got back to the guild and had the receptionist confirm our commissions when she looked at Reina like she couldn't believe what she saw.

"4-41 Horn Rabbits, 8 Mad Wolves and 4 Rush Pigs... How many did you hunt anyway!? I was sure she would be power leveling with the help of those two in the back, but she's done all this on her own!"

"Fu-fufufu... Aren't I amazeishng..."

"Reina, don't try to talk and just get some rest."

"Making her fight to the point of total exhaustion, are you a demon..."

"...You're right, I might have pushed her too much. I'm sorry, Reina."

"I-I'm finesh... It's ok, it's oksh..."

"You absolutely don't look OK! Are you tormenting her!? What are making such a small girl do!"

"I'm not smallsh..."

"Let's take it down a notch from tomorrow on. You've done well today, I'll make you a dessert for today's dinner."

"Fuoooo! For realsies!?"

"S-she perked right up... What's up with this girl too..."

Reina's face lit up the instant she heard dessert. Just you know, it's not gonna be anything as grand as your birthday cake.

"Those two made a little girl work super hard by dangling food at her."

"Demons, they're demons..."

"Or more like, brutes?"

The peanut gallery has something to say about us it seems.
I admit the first part, but that nickname is going too far.

But it's true that making Reina do all the culling is not a good optic, Alma and I should go hunt in the prairie depths once in a while too.

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 378

378 Declaring Intention

We're deep inside a forest. It gets darker much faster than in towns.
As the setting sun got hidden between the trees, the temperature dropped to a rather pleasant one.
I'm done preparing our camp ground. All that's left is cooking our meal.

"There's still leftover soup from this noon, just gotta warm it up. Ah why are we standing around like this, let's all sit down."

The only spot to rest inside that cave is at the very end.
I'd like to avoid staying in somewhere with no escape routes. That's gonna restrict our movements. If anything happened we'd be deadlocked.

(My 'power' can easily break through that, but there's no need to willingly put ourselves in that possibility.)

What's worrisome to the common people don't work on me. But I don't want to flaunt my power.
I only do that when I go with the flow, which is akin to getting dragged into the flow.

"May I ask you one thing? Oh but feel free to ignore me if you don't want to talk about it. I'd like to know just who are you really."

Linda asked me a question that's all too familiar to me.
Thus I gave her the same tired answer.

"Not telling, I've my own circumstances. You may not like that, but that is your ego speaking. It's human's nature to wanna know the unknown. But expecting to always get an answer is arrogance. I understand that knowing my identity will give you a sense of relief in this situation, however, I am under no obligation to comply. Isn't this enough? You're safe and sound anyway. If you're still not satisfied with that, it's on you to bear, not me to care."

I might sound too brusque here, but I'm fed up with her constant pushiness.
I've got the impression that Linda won't back down otherwise.
Thus I opted to outright reject her, and that seemed to be working.

"Seeing as you're going as far as saying that, I can't exactly pursue the matter as the rescued here. But you will accept my reward since you have agreed to take my 'commission', won't you?"

Or so I thought, turned out she hadn't relented yet. I pulled myself together and rejected her attempt again.

"I'm not a merc y'know. I never agreed to taking on your commission. Therefore, I have no reason to accept your reward."

My refusal ended up giving Linda a piece of information.

"You're not a registered mercenary despite your strength? I'm more and more intrigued with your identity..."

This brought a chill down my spine for some reason I couldn't fathom thus I gave her a warning.

"Keep probing my background and it's a good bye. I'll be on my way, you lot can stay here."

Looking visibly panicking, Linda took back her words. All while the other two ladies were sending her censuring gazes.

"Forgive me. I won't say anything uncalled for anymore. So please could you give it another thought? We wouldn't know what to do left behind in this place."

Silence ran afterward. Unable to bear it any longer, I took a drink from a cup I took from my bag and started warming up our soup.

I also brought out a barrel full of drinking water from my magic bag without thinking much about it.
I had no idea how unusual that was, nor did I know that intrigued Linda even further.
From this point on, Linda would keep observing my every move until our parting, but I simply had no way of realizing that.

Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 106

Seafood, and Tasty-looking Meat

Good evening, I'm currently making our dinner in the inn kitchen.
We'd have liked to eat out but the food were all stupid expensive.
5000 en per serving, what are they, fine dining? They're your ordinary restaurants too, as much as rip-off as the ones in Ginza.
We can't afford to spend that much per person every meal so I'm resigning to cooking our meal myself. Walking around sampling food like back then is only for special occasions.
Forgive your dad for not earning enough. Eh, quit it with the farce? OK, let's get to it.

Today's menu is tempura served over a bowl of rice. Feels like I've been making nothing but fried stuff lately, wonder if our cholesterol level is alright. It should be fine since I use vegetable oil though...
I was planning to serve sashimi but the two girls have never eaten raw fish and not really big on the idea so... Well, there's no rushing it.

I cut white meat fish, ring-cut squids, cut a bit of the un-veined shrimps, rub them with a mix of water, starch and sake before leaving them for several minutes wrapped in a clean cloth to take off the moisture.
If I don't do that, oil will fly everywhere when I fry them. Might make the stove catch on fire too... I recall that time I fried stuff for the first time in Japan. All the flying oil, it was hot and made a mess of my kitchen...
In the meantime, I mix egg and water, add in flour to make the batter for tempura. I heard leaving them not too mixed makes it crunchier.
Then I add in the cut fish, squids and shrimps onto the batter before sprinkling more flour on top and putting them into a pan with oil heated up to 170 c (with Menu's help).
Once they've stopped bubbling, I take them off the oil onto an oil draining tray before making cuts on the surface.

Once I'm done with the seafood one, I mix the remaining batter with cut Rock Onions and Red Carrots, before frying them as to balance our nutrient intake.
Raw vegetables are probably better. I'll go with a lighter one tomorrow.

Then I boil dried seaweed in water, take it off once the water starts boiling and add in sugar, soybean-like thing, and sake to make a mirin sauce substitute.
It's done once it's turned viscous enough.

Lastly, I put tempura on top of a bowl of aro rice and drip the mirin sauce on top. Done.
I add bowls of premade miso soup I had on Item Screen, to make it look like a set meal.

"Dinner ready, I've got more sauce if you need more."

"Uwah, so many fried shrimp and squid!"

"These won't lose to restaurant dishes..."

"Thank you, it's worth making them hearing you girls say that. Let's chow down."

""Let's.""

After saying that in a chorus, we bit on our pick.
I start with shrimps. Umu, shrimp tempura is supreme after all. The crunchy sensation is unbeatable. The sauce has just enough sweetness too, I should leave a bit as a sample.

"The fried vegetable is so crunchy and sweet, it goes well with the sauce. So good."

"The fish, squid and shrimps all have different textures and taste too, yet they go nicely with the crunchy batter! I can't stop my spoon!"

"Chew them properly, the food isn't going anywhere."

"Speaking of spoons, Kajikawa-san you always use those two sticks whenever you eat. Are those 'Chopsticks'?"

"They are, are you not familiar with them?"

"Frankly speaking, I've never seen anyone using those before Kajikawa-san. I know stories about heroes-sama eating with them in the past though."

<<Chopsticks are not commonly used in this world. Some people who revere heroes may try to use them during meals, but most do not know the proper way to.>>

So you're telling me I look like I'm trying to mimic heroes?
...Maybe I'd better start using spoons and forks. But it feels too late.
Well, we've gotta get up early tomorrow, I should get to bed after showering.

The day after, we took the same herb gathering and magic beast culling commissions before heading to Monster Prairie.
By the way, our receptionist, Naima was taking a day off as a consequence of appraising all the herbs I brought yesterday. Sorry 'bout that.
...The substitute receptionist handed over our commission cards with a twitching face. Guess I should settle with only 30 pieces today.

"I can already deal with rabbits no prob now. This stuff is easier than I thought~."

"No being careless. They may be weak but a right hit on your vital may prove fatal. Don't let up."

"Yes ma'am~."

Looks like they're doing alright over there. She should reach Lv10 in half a month time at this rate.
But losing half a month of leveling for me and Alma is a bit painful. Yet we can't just take Reina along for the ride.

<<She has had practical experiences in Magic Beast Cave, as such she should be fine as long as you do not go in too deep.>>

...Well, she's gotten strong enough to play tags with High Cave Bears, I suppose she should be fine if she's careful.
But just to be safe, we should spend around 10 days safely leveling at the outer circumference first.
Waiting until she's got enough practical combat experience shouldn't be too long.

Hm, some Horn Rabbits are coming my way.
Go to Reina, not me you guys. Turn into her exp fodders.

『Kiiyii!』

Stab stab

The horn rabbits kept charging at me while I dug out herbs.
Due to the gap in our Attributes, it doesn't hurt at all, my HP doesn't even decrease by one but it's so annoying, stop that.

『Kiki!』
『Kiii!』
『Ki!』

Stab stab stab staaab

Quit with with the incessant assaults. You can try attacking me at the same time all you want, there's no point.
But man, these rabbits sure don't look cute at all. The one I kept as a pet in my elementary school days had a cuter face.
But they sure seem fleshy. Their meat must taste good.
...Maybe I should give rabbit meat a try for today's dinner?

『『『!! Kiiiyiii!!!』』』

...They ran away at full speed the instant that thought crossed my mind. Our precious exp and meat...

"Hikaru, don't intimidate those rabbits into fleeing just because they annoy you. Divert them here to Reina."

"No I didn't intimidate or anything you know? I just thought those rabbits looked like they'd taste good for dinner."

"That's probably even scarier to those rabbits..."

Umu, what a shame.
I've gotten plenty of herbs already, nothing to do now.
Ah, right.

"Rather than waiting for magic beasts to come our way, how about I transport them here by sliding just above ground."

"...You'd normally think that'd end up badly to the transporter, but you'll probably be fine considering earlier, might be a good idea."

"Please don't bring me anything too strong. I feel like Kajikawa-san's gonna come out with a bear in tow or something."

"Oy oy, I'm not gonna play around for your leveling. It's a matter of life or death."

"O-of course you won't, sorry..."

"At most, I'll just grab some wolves."

"No no, wolves are bad news enough! Please keep it to rabbits!"

She took care of 15 magic beasts on the first day which is probably enough, but there's no harm in making it even more efficient.
With me transporting the beasts here, it should double that amount.
That enables a high pace leveling without damaging her practical combat experience.
Alma and I can refill her mana when she's running short.
Now then, time to go look for some handy-looking magic beasts.
