592 With Enough Training
The ice block flew at Jido drawing an arc in the air, moving very slowly.
Hence, it was easy to counter.
"Crucible aboil, melt all creations."
A round shield made of magma, three meter long in diameter--bigger than the ice block.
It manifested mid air and met the flying ice block head-on.
The ice melted into water before instantaneously getting vaporized into steam.
It was a steam explosion. The area was filled with a booming sound before pure white mist set in.
(Oh crap... Magic is scaary... What's up with that destructive power...)
Nothing will left if that hits someone. A head-on collision's gonna turn them into pieces.
There was something amiss when the mist cleared up and visibility was back.
The challenger is nowhere to be seen. I didn't watch the match in Accelerated state.
I wanted to watch this supposedly flashy match raw.
So I missed the moment the challenger vanished.
He was behind Ultimate Mage Jido the next time he showed up.
(No way!? A mage doing close quarter combat? My image! My image of magic battle!)
He had a knife in his hand he thrust at Jido's back.
A clever scheme using the steam as a cover to pull off an ambush. This must be his ultimate plan.
It's a common belief that mages don't do well in melee.
In stuff like character parameters in games, they tend to have low STR and focus more on INT and MAG.
But in real life, that weakness can be conquered by simply training yourself.
It should be possible to use magic while fighting in close quarter as long as you train your physical ability.
I mean even in games, classes like Magic Knights exist. It should be doable.
The champion is said to be a master of magic. That name must come from years of him devoting himself in magic.
Can someone like this deal with melee combat in a moment's notice? Normally you'd think not.
This is the end, or so I thought. But as it turned out, I was mistaken.
'Clank', the sound rang. The sound of the incoming knife stopped by a staff.
The elderly Jido moved superbly and blocked the attack.

Jido's next moves were just as refined.
Kora who almost lost his balance braced his legs and quickly swung his knife horizontally, but Jido easily dodged such a desperate attack.
He had already taken some distance away from Kora.
Jido took a stance with his staff like he was wielding a spear and slowly thrust at Kora. Hit on the shoulder, Kora lost his balance again.
Jido immediately raised his staff high up and swung it down. Hitting Kora's shoulder once again.
Jido didn't stop his assault as Kora stopped moving and groaned from the pain.
While holding the staff part 1/3 from the tips with overhand and underhand grips, he swiftly spun around and hit Kora with both tips. A double strike.
We'll I'll be. Those are trained moves. He's been training despite his advanced age. On the art of staff.
"You will get stronger. I too shall be stronger. Or perhaps you do not believe these old bones can reach a higher height? Nay, human can do anything as long as they put their mind into it... O soil, push away the obstacle before me."
The challenger who couldn't keep his calm from the pain was unable to cast a counter spell and got shoved away from the ring by Jido's magic, ending the match.
