Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 49

New Power

So I get that we gotta be wary of that ghost-like triangle hat's high Offensive Magic level, but what are Support Magic and Spirit Magic?

<<Support Magic mainly consists of magic that temporarily buff your Status, while Spirit Magic allows one to summon Spirits that govern over elements, temporarily employing and making them work for you. It also lets one seek help from nearby Spirits to perform a variety of phenomena.>>

Sorry uh, can you start from explaining what those Spirits are? Are they like some sort spiritual beings of the great mother nature?

<<Spirits are not categorized as either humans nor magic beasts, they are akin to a being halfway between organic and inorganic. They are able to wield elements as they please, some powerful higher order Spirits are even revered by humans.>>

I'm still not sure I understand... Well guess it doesn't matter for now.
In short, this Spirit Magician can use magic that deploy Spirits huh.
Seeing as it's got 'Spirit' on its name, is this thing one too?

<<They have no common ground besides its Spirit Magic Skill.>>

Ah, really. Well, it looks more like a ghost than a spirit after all. No, I'm not talking about my mind ghost.
Now then, it would be best if we went with another ambush, but this thing should make for a good practice considering we've never fought this type before.

"That thing specializes in magic. It's got Level 6 Offensive Magic and also Level 2 Support Magic."

"Its Offensive Magic, is higher level than mine..."

...Huh? Is she feeling competitive?

"Err, going with an ambush is probably safer for us, but since we've never fought this type before and all, you up for a frontal assault? It'll be a good practice."

"Un. Let's do it. I wanna compare which one of us is better with magic."

Don't tell me, Alma actually has a competitive spirit.
She must have always felt inferior during her days as Apprentice Paladin, and suppressed that side of her thinking she'd lose anyway, but now that she's got her confidence, her real nature comes out. A good thing I believe.
Same with me, when people told me I don't have Skills or my Stats are garbage, I would... wait, I kept acting rash. Guess everything gotta be in moderation.

"Then first, I'll get in melee range to test the water, you can start shooting magic when the coast is clear. But if it looks dangerous, we're retreating to the portal at once."

"Got it. Don't be reckless now."

"Of course."

Time to get close.
I slowly made my way so the Spirit Magician would notice me.
Hello there, how do you do?

『!』

Oh, it noticed me.
I could tell it went into battle mode. Holding its staff aloft, ready to shoot spells anytime.
As I kept pressing forward, it emitted bloodlust and hostility before casting a spell.

<<Support SKill Lv2: 'Speedup' Temporarily buffs target's Agility.>>

First it buffed itself huh. Taking all the precautions to gain an advantage, this thing's pretty adept at fighting.
Then it proceeded to fly in a hard to predict trajectory, seemingly to avoid its movement being read.
Is this thing flying without a Skill? Maybe by controlling mana like me.

<<Spirit Magicians possess an organ that allows them to fly. Hence, it falls under a different classification from Skill or Mana Control.>>

An organ to fly huh. Well, I guess it's like those bird magic beasts, Bladewings and co. They didn't have Flight related Skill either.

<<The Skill 'Flight' does not exist. 'Sky Walk' ability from Ultimate Martial Arts Skill allows one to walk in the sky, however it does not enable its user to fly freely in all directions like by way of Mana Control.>>

Didn't know Skills like that exist.
Once I've leveled high enough, maybe I should pretend to have that Sky Walk Skill so I could fly around in public.
Whoops, the enemy shot out another spell while my thought was going astray.

A fireball in my direction.
Dodging that from this distance is easy peasy tho'. There we go.

!? Eh, it's homing in on me!?
Oh crap, can't dodge. Wrap my arms with mana and defend!

Beshi BOOM!

『!?』

"...Huh?"

...Beshi? What's up with that sensation.
I didn't have time to solidify my mana so I blocked it with a soft cushion-like mana wrapped around my hand, which then resulted in the fireball getting flicked away.
It hit and broke the wall into charred remains. My HP would have gone down a lot if that hit me.

The triangle hat was looking at me in confusion. Heck, I dunno what just happened either.
Could it be, the spell didn't combust due to lack of impact because it hit the soft mana cushion?
Hit me up with another of that please. Oh, here it comes.
I wrapped my hand with soft mana again and tried flicking the fireball.

Peshi BOOM!

One more.

Beshi DOM!

Another one!

Pashi DON!

Umu umu. Yep, looks like mana cushion stops those fireballs from exploding.
Got me a new way to defend against magic from an impromptu action.
Whoa, it's shooting a flaming javelin at me now, must think fireballs won't work huh. Don't think I could flick that away.
No wait, what if I deploy an even softer and thicker mana?

DOO! Bunyon

It worked, I caught the flaming javelin intact.
And uh, bunyon, it feels so weird to the touch. Like a sorta slime.
So I've got this spell in my hand, what then. Return to sender I guess, pooy.

BUUN ZUDOON!

『?!?!』

Tch, the thing dodged.
It was panicking after seeing its spells getting repelled one after another yet it managed to narrowly dodge that last attack.
I heard Alma sounding perplexed behind me too, 'Eeh...', guessing her mental state is similar to the triangle hat's.

『...!』

Oh, what is it now.
Triangle hat shot some sorta magic at the ground which then began to undulate.
Soon after, several spots on the ground turned into unstable sand pits. Is this the fabled Spirit Magic?

<<Spirit Magic Lv2 'Little Gnome'. Summons earth elemental spirits to manipulate terrain over a small area.>>

Small area, yet it's expansive enough to cover the entirety of this room.
Higher order Spirits must be overwhelming.
Wait then, are these mana reactions I'm detecting loitering around underground, Spirits?
Seems they used the mana spewed out by that triangle hat to change the terrain.
Let's see if I can grab them by cramming my hand into one of the sand pits.

Zubossuka
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

Oh my, it slipped right off. Guess it's not possible?
Hm?

<Guy just shoved his hand in.>
<He trying to catch us or something? Nope no way, we're like lumps of mana after all.>
<Can't touch us physically. What a dumdum.>
<Dum, dum. Humans are dum-dum~.>

...Hohou. They have free will huh.
I heard voices ridiculing me from under the ground.
Thanks for the hint. So magical means can touch you huh?
I enveloped my hand in Mana Armor and thrust it into the ground to catch the Spirits there.

ZUBO GASHI!

FISH!
I succeeded grabbing one of the Spirits.
Hm? The thing is invisible but I can tell mana reaction in my hand. This is a Spirit huh.
I was sure it would look like a bearded old man wearing a triangle hat since it's called gnome and all, but I can't tell the outline.

<Owawawawa!? What!? What's this!?>
<He got us!? What're you doing!? No, what's this human doing!?>
<What're you doing! Get away from him quick!>
<Can't! His hand's wrapped in mana! What's up with this guy!?>

They fell into panic. How does it feel getting caught by a dumdum?

<Let me go! What're you trying to pull off!>

"Ah, a small test run? Or something like that."

<Why the question mark!? This guy's scary!>

"Ah, well seeing as we can talk and all, mind turning the ground back to normal? It's hard to walk on."

<What do you mean 'seeing as'! Nuh uh, no way, we got some mana already!>

Hearing that reply, I picked up a pebble on the ground and crushed it with my Mana Armored hand.

"Please, will you grant my request?"

<<<<SIR, YESSIRE!>>>>

Persuasion success, the ground gradually turned back to normal.
Man, I'm just glad they're a reasonable bunch.

<<Your action is generally regarded as a threat, not a persuasion.>>

Ah, a quip from Menu-san.
Feels like Menu-san's starting to have its own will and not just reply to me in a business-like manner lately.

『...???』

Oh my, triangle hat is looking dumbfounded at the Spirits turning their back on it.
Well, doesn't seem like there's anything interesting left, guess it's time to defeat it together with Alma.

"Alma, the coast looks clear, you're up now."

"U-un... I just don't know what's what... Oh well..."

Alma who went past confusion phase straight to resignation phase entered the stage timidly.

『!!!』

Looks like it judged the odd wasn't on its side against two of us, it flew off toward another room at high speed.

"Ah, it's running away!"

"...I won't let you!"

Alma shot a powered up Stone Bullet at the triangle hat.
It twisted its body as a last ditch effort and managed to dodge the spell, but the Stone Bullet suddenly changed trajectory and homed in on the triangle hat.
Eh, what was that!? Did she come up with it after watching the fireball earlier? That's way too quick!

The spell pierced through Spirit Magician's head, crashing it down.
It disappeared into a haze, leaving only its staff behind.

"T-that was amazing. Can't believe you managed to change the spell's path."

"I've been training on the technique since quite a while ago. That was the first time I put it into practice though."

That was her first? Isn't this girl just incredible? Am I even needed?

<These folks are way scary. I wanna go home, let me go home...>

I could hear an exhausted voice from my right hand. Oh right, forgot I had a Spirit grabbed there.
Come to think of it, from what I've seen, you offer your mana to Spirits in order to wield Spirit Magic, wonder if I can do that too?

<<It is likely possible as long as there are Spirits nearby. However, it cannot be done without Spirit Summon Skill. Obtaining the Skill requires entering a contract with a Spirit.>>

Hmm, welp, I can't learn Skills.
How do you enter a contract anyway?

<<The condition is met when both Spirits and the Contractee agree to it. However, the Contractee must be capable of casting the corresponding Spirit's element as Offensive Magic first.>>

Oho, I see.
So say, if I suggest the little one in my hand to enter a contract with Alma, she's gonna obtain the Skill?

<<Affirmative.>>

"...Hey, Spirit-kun, I have a favor to ask you, can you please enter a contract?"

<Absolutely not! You're too scary! Lemme go home! Please!>

"No, not me, it's with that girl over there, Alma."

"Eh?"

Alma looked surprised at us suddenly referencing her.

<Eh? I mean, well, she's much better than you, sure...>

"For your information, I'm not gonna let you go till you agree."

<What the heck, how's this a favor! Where's my choice! I get it, I get it already, dammit!>

It gave its approval, sounding a bit desperate. What a kindhearted Spirit-san.

<<...>>

Oh, another maintenance run, Menu? Well whatever.

"Alma, you probably can't see it, but there's a spirit in my hand. So apparently you can learn Spirit Magic if you enter a contract with this spirit, what do you think?"

"E-eh...!? ...U-un, please, by all means..."

"Contract established, yep."

A dim light enveloped Alma and the Spirit.
Checking her Skill shows Spirit Magic Lv1. Looks like it went well.

<Oy, missy. We're gonna lend you a hand now that we're contracted. But make it reasonable, don't be like this guy here. Like, for realsies.>

"U-un..."

Alma replied with a twitching face... I guess I went a bit overboard from getting made fun of.
Think that's enough for today. We've acquired quite a bit of items, exp and Skills too.
Wonder if we'll eventually measure up to Demon King's underlings if we keep this up.

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 323

323 Is the Promised Reward, High? Low?

"So uh? About your shares in this..."

Kidd spoke to me. I refused him outright.

"Remember our agreement? All you need to do is to keep your word. Don't worry yourself over my reward."

"Don't think we can agree with that..."

I don't have much desire in this world. Material, money, sex drive... are not exactly nonexistent.
However, I think they're below average compared to the people in this world. Quite far below.

(I must have left them all in my previous life...)

My 'body' and 'spirit' who stayed in that world must be living like he's always been even now.
Only my soul got forcefully dragged from that world.
Something inside me must have warped at that time, or at the time of my reincarnation.

(Perhaps this excessively mighty power has fulfilled me, or maybe I have no room left for other stuff due to it...)

"Okay, how 'bout a victory celebration feast! Drink and make merry all ya want! I'm even gonna hire some escorts..."

I cut Kidd short with a 'No.'
'Ugh', as Kidd stammered, Firuna followed up.

"We would like to express our gratitude. You have saved our lives in so many occasions. Back at the lake with the monster, and the matter with Wraith King as well as the marquis."

Under the strong unbending gaze of Firuna, I relented a bit.

"...Fine, then do one thing for me. There's a dwarf girl called Minya running a blacksmith store. A gramp at that store is a skilled blacksmith. Go buy their stuff."

"...Are you truly fine with that? There must be more..."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"Yeah, I am. Tell them about me then ask them to smith you stuff using 'that thing'."

I took off my hood and showed them my face. Kidd and Danku looked at me like it was unusual.
Melgis was, 'Oy oy...', seemingly realizing something.
Firuna had an astounded look with her eyes wide open.
Mary who already saw my face in the dungeon quietly stared at me.

"...I cannot pretend to know what's going on, nevertheless, very well. However, please know that we shall spare nothing should you need our help in the future. Do rely on us regardless of the matter."

Firuna lowered her head as she said that. Followed by the rest of the group.
Even the hard-headed Mary.
Dunno what's with the change of heart, but I replied nonetheless.

"Rather than getting all serious and lowering your heads, I'd prefer if you guys just keep your end of the bargain. That's all I ask. Forget about me. I'm not gonna involve myself with you guys anymore."

"...We will keep our promise from here on. That is definite. Heck, breaking that means making an enemy out of you, yeah? No amount of money in this world gonna help with that. Also, sorry for all the trouble Mary caused you. Hope you coulda overlook that one at least."

Melgis spoke jokingly yet his face was serious.
He's saying they won't 'betray' me.
Mary looked like she was about to protest at the 'cause trouble' part before immediately turned sullen and opened her mouth.

"I'd love to know what's your story. But I couldn't get your 'trust' in time. Guess that's that then."

Mary seemed to harbor interest in my background. She's probably eager to research more about my 'Black', but the kingdom is already within sight. There's no time left.

"If it weren't for you, forget conquering that dungeon, this kingdom would have been wrecked badly by that Wraith King. You have my utmost gratitude."

Danku thanked me still with his usual stout tone.

"It's a goodbye once we're inside the kingdom. And well, I had some fun too I guess?"

Hearing me saying that, 'White Fang' looked at each other before smiling wryly.

Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 48

To Dungeon Slaughter, Nay, Exploration Once More

I woke up to a slightly nostalgic familiar looking ceiling.
Ah, it hit me that I'm back at Daijel's inn seeing this ceiling.
Now then, time to wash my face and make breakfast. Today I'm gonna go with ham and eggs, miso soup and arorice.

As I was frying ham and eggs in the kitchen, Alma came by.

"Good morning... You look like you could use some more shut-eye, Alma."

"Morning... The moons bothered me so much, I couldn't get a wink of sleep..."

"Two full moons, the sign of Demon King's birth and Hero summoning was it... Hero aside, is Demon King that bad a news?"

"Well we only have records to go by but it's said that millions of people died before a Hero managed to defeat a Demon King."

"M-millions? ...The scale is way too big, it's hard to visualize..."

"But mom and dad once brought me to remnants of the destruction left in their wake. Stuff like a crater one kilometer in diameter, or ruins of a grand city where every building was abandoned."

"Uwaa... I can see why they're regarded as super dangerous."

"Told you, you took it too lightly."

Alma sat down at the table in the room next to the kitchen after saying that, looking slightly disgruntled.
...I mean I can't help it. I'm not from this world, getting terms like Demon Kings suddenly thrown around did nothing to me.
My imagination only extends to one being a last boss in RPGs at best. Like how they're offering half of the world. Who needs that.
Heck, isn't this Demon King more like an isekai terrorist, just on a massive scale? Or maybe a despot who wages wars on all countries without a care in the world.
...When I put that way, the situation does feel much more pressing. Maybe we should take shelter somewhere?

<<When a Demon King is born, a base under his rule also spawns on each continents. There is virtually no safe zone anywhere.>>

Ah, there's no escape huh. Dammit.
What a huge pain in the rear. Ain't Demon King-san way too belligerent toward humanity?
Are these Demon King's bases like? Some sorta castles inhabited by the Demon King's four executives or something?

<<Your take on the matter is apt.>>

I see. I'd have loved nothing more than to avoid them, but I guess it depends on their actions.
I'd probably die if we ever got to fight one. Zero chance of winning.
Gotta work on my strength so it doesn't come to that. Which means, food first thing first. I finished making ham and eggs while I was thinking. The miso soup is cooking nicely too.
Can't fight on an empty stomach. Time to dig in.
We usually ate in each our room before we formed a party together but nowadays we eat on the same table together like it's natural.
This way, I can hear her impressions on the flavor and such, also the food tastes much better than when I'm eating alone for some reason. Uumu, and here I was used to eating by myself when I was living alone.

After breakfast, I went downtown to relax and do some shopping, there I could hear the populace throwing the terms, 'Demon King' and 'Hero' here and there.
They must have seen the two full moons last night. A lot of them looked anxious.
Think Alma and I should focus on leveling up our basic and skill levels, upgrading our equipment and training on mana control, lifeforce control and such.
We already handed over Jet Boar mats to the store, we should have our new equipment soon. I'm gonna get strong enough to solo that thing.

Guess this means we gotta head back into the dungeon for leveling.
I took a quick look on the currently available commissions at the guild and most had nothing to do with magic beasts so it'd be hard to level up taking them.
For the sake of dealing with stuff relating to Demon Kings, pure strength is currently a more pressing matter than cash.
So yeah, time to resume our the hobgoblin and high kobold slaughter...
Also, won't the treasure chests start dropping rare items just about now please. I'm even fine with vanisoi beans.

Good grief, even an exceedingly simple goal of living while having fun and eating good seems so far-fetched now.
Mostly thanks to Demon King. Damn you, hope you get your just desserts one day. By the hero. No way for me.
...Say these Demon Kings were born by the law of this world, the question would be why.
Considering they seem hellbent on massacring humans, you'd think they want to make humanity go extinct, yet they never succeeded.
I mean of course it would be thanks to the summoned hero, I guess.
Or maybe it's the demon king's duty to reduce the number of humans in this world until they get defeated by the hero.
Like a way to prevent resource shortage from a population explosion. Just a wild idea of mine though.

<<...>>

Hm? Did you just display something, Menu?

<<Nay. T'was merely a test message for maintenance purpose.>>

Really. Menu's got a lot of handy features, guess it needs regular maintenance huh. Thankfully it's done automatically.
Time to cut my delusion time short and get ready for some dungeon delving.
Getting down too deep is dangerous, but after our experience with Jet Boar, I think one floor down than the usual is reasonable.
...Hopefully that's not enough to raise a flag.

And here we are at the dungeon.
The last time we stepped inside was before the village commission, yet I don't feel at all nostalgic since the structure inside is ever changing.
The magic beasts on each floor get stronger the deeper you go, but they're below level 10 up until floor three, with only some occasional hobgoblins and high kobolds.
Alma and I can beat goblins bare handed now, with weapons we can even easily defeat mere hobgoblins and high kobolds without Skills or Mana Control.
Apparently starting from floor four and below, magic beasts above level 10 start showing up so we're planning to conquer floor four today.

We passed through the escape portals on floor 1-3 and arrived at floor four.
Now then, this is probably as far as we could go not using our MP at all.
The goal may be to get stronger, but we can't be reckless still. Dying now would be like putting the cart before the horse.
First we should find the portal on this floor and then use that as a base of operation while we go around hunting magic beasts and treasure chests.

Ooh, found a villager, I mean a magic beast. All four of them.
Three High Kobolds with one strong-ish mana... Wait, that's a Werewolf, last time was at the Stampede huh.
A frontal clash could prove a bit tight with their number so I'm having Alma shoot the reinforced Stone Bullet while I ambush them with Pseudo Ground Shrink + Mana Pile Bunker.
3, 2, 1, GO!

BOOM, as Alma shot her Stone Bullet at a High Kobold, I zeroed in on another High Kobold with Low Altitude Flight.
As my palm touched it, my Pile will... Oh wait, oh crap, I mistimed.

BASH, my palm hit the High Kobold chest and sent it flying a few meter ahead.
The Pile Bunker misfired. My Mana Flight came out faster than I expected, making the timing go all wrong.
...Huh? It's dead? I mean yeah, that should deal damage seeing the speed I crashed into it but how's that enough to kill it. Kinda let down.
Alma made a hole on the another High Kobold's body, killing it.
It's clear since the village, but Alma's really such a good sharpshooter.

<<Conjecture, the primary cause is her Throwing Skill boosting her accuracy.>>
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

Ah, so Throwing Skill affects magic accuracy too huh. The so called Skill Combo.
She must have thought it through if she learned the Skill with that goal in mind. This girl is really a genius.
Now then, Werewolf. Guess we can go with the same old tactic of me holding it down and Alma putting the finishing touch.

BWOSH, I closed in on the Werewolf and grabbed both its arms.
...Huh? Is it just me or is this Werewolf physically weaker than the previous one? No, looking at its Stats, it's actually stronger.
Ah, right, I've been leveling up so my attributes are higher than last time. Even the previously super intimidating Werewolf looks so harmless now. Inflation of power is cruel.
Then, Alma struck it down. She didn't need to use Magic Swords.

"They went down much easier than I thought. Guess we got stronger thanks to all the level ups."

"But no letting your guard down. We'd be in trouble if a foe as strong as a Jet Boar showed up."

"Right on. Let's find the portal quick and set up a safe zone there."

Yeah, wouldn't want to face that thing again for a while. We barely made it out that one time.
For now, let's resume the exploration while staying on toes for traps.

We prowled floor four for a while and found it was indeed an overall upgrade.
For example, items from treasure chests are slightly better than the ones on floor three.
Potions get to mid level, equipment aren't of iron or rusted variety, they're mainly steel ones now.
Looks like we won't have to worry about money. I get why adventurers would venture deeper.
Getting ahead of ourselves gonna kick us back in the nuts though, gotta be careful.

Oh, found the escape portal.
We haven't really fought for real today, let's keep looking around before heading back...?
Hm? I feel quite a strong mana reaction from the room next to the portal's.
I peeked inside and saw a suspicious-looking humanoid wearing a triangle-shaped hat floating.
Status check.

Oh, a magic-focused magic beast.
That's a first, we've only fought physical type thus far. Bladewings didn't have strong magic in their arsenal.
Against a magic-type, I guess we should stay within melee range and block it from casting magic. No wait, dodging a Stone Bullet at point-blank range would be difficult.
Coming up with ways to fight different types of enemies is pretty fun. Now then, what do here.

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 322

322 Until Return

Crumble rumble rumble rumble....

The sound of something collapsing somewhere deep underground is filling the air.

"Guys? Isn't this bad news? Like for real."

I know 'earthquake' from my past life. I dunno if it's also a general knowledge for the people in this world, but if this vibration comes from the collapsing dungeon, isn't this place quite unsafe?

"It will be fine. This always happens. Let us focus on finishing the required procedure."

Apparently this wasn't anything unusual according to Firuna. The way she phrased it sounds like they've conquered a lot of dungeons already.

(Then the spectacular collapse of the tunnel dungeon back then was not the norm...?)

'But why?' I cursed inwardly as I recalled that time I escaped the tunnel dungeon with the blacksmith gramps.
The crumbling sound continued on for a while before eventually settling down.
My curiosity piqued, I went to the big hole where the dungeon entrance was located and it had turned into a flat ground with absolutely no trace left. You really can't tell it apart from some random ground besides the impromptu guard camp set around it.

(Made me wonder if I'd just dreamed it all up...)

Wish I could have seen the moment that hole vanished, can't be helped though. I had to go with the White Fang after all.
Who could've thought it would be gone so soon.

(Fantasy, full of mystery, full of wonder.)

My understanding cannot hope to match the common sense of the people living in this world.
As I was thinking that, somebody called out to me.

"Oy! We're gonna head back to the association now! Come with us!"

Kidd did.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
(Well, this expedition isn't over till our return... or something.)

I plan to go back to the kingdom once anyway, might as well going along with them instead of parting ways here.

"Anything else we forgot... guess not. Then it's time for our triumphant return! Let's go and tell everybody there ain't no dungeon threat no more!"

Kidd seemed awfully excited. What, does he like being a hero or something?

"Take it down a notch Kidd. I agree that it's a good thing the threat is no longer present. However, this is far from the zenith we seek out."

"Yup, this expedition really showed how much of greenhorns we really are. And that's why we're gonna get enough power so we can stand up against anything."

"Yeah but, there's no harm in taking a little breather just for a lil' bit, don'tcha think?"

"Yes I agree. Although, we could not conquer this dungeon through our powers alone, it's all thanks to him."

Firuna giggled. Her smile was very dazzling. She must have finally felt at ease now. Up until this point, she always had this complicated serious look on her face.
Her smile which embodies 'cute makes right' gathered a huge number of gazes from the men around.

We already did the procedure to leave this ex-dungeon spot which was turning into a festival.
White Fang got on a wagon that had been prepared for them.

"That felt quite long yet also short...? Now then, where to go from here...?"

None of them heard my mutter. I followed them into the wagon.
Afterward, the wagon took off, slowly advancing ahead, rattling all the way.
Inside the wagon, White Fang started discussing what to do about their income this time.

Idle Talk (3) Hero, Summon

(Um, is the past hero still alive?)

She told me that there's one earthling living in that world.
If they've still got a hero alive, where's the need to summon me?

<<No, the previous hero has passed away of old age. The earthling presently in that world is not a hero. He was transported there due to what could be said to be an accident.>>

(An accident?)

<<...Yes. Unfortunately for that person, he cannot use a single Skill nor can he choose a Job. His initial Status was completely nil yet he was thrown from Japan into a magic beast territory.>>

(U-uwaa. 'Unfortunate' isn't cutting it... And he's still alive?)

<<Yes, as a result of many overlapping miraculous coincidences he's normally... Normally? Living there.>>

(What, what's with that weird question mark placement!?)

<<It's just that, this person has committed so many absurd feats, he might even turn out more dangerous than the Demon King in the future...  Fortunately, he doesn't seem to have any intention to make that technique known to the public, but if he did, there wouldn't be enough resources to... Ah, my apologies, I am not at liberty to disclose the matter further. W-well, the man himself is not at all a bad person, in fact he's been going around saving people in trouble. I believe he won't be hostile if you come in contact with him.>>

(Eh, what? Did he come along bringing in technological cheat or domestic affair cheat or something?)

<<No, that's not the case... Forgive me, I simply cannot divulge this matter. There are some extenuating circumstances...>>

(O-oh really.)

That person sure sounds like he's got a lot going on. My fellow countryman, what have you been doing over there.
...Feels like it'd have been easier if she told me that he's a criminal and I gotta be careful. It's just eerie now.

<<Now then, I believe it should be about time, do you have any more questions?>>

(Two last ones. Where am I getting summoned? You won't drop me in some random magic beast territory like that person, will you...)

<<Please be rest assured, I shall be sending you to the summoning altar under the kingdom's management.>>

(You will, thank god... Last one, I know it's late and all but are you sure you're fine with me as the hero? I'm nothing more than a part timer with no remarkable talent...)

<<And that's precisely why. You say you have no talent, but from another perspective, it means your ability is not slanted to only one aspect. And that's not a flaw but a virtue for a hero expected to master all kinds of Skills. You are more than fit to become a hero.>>

(Is, that right... Thank you, so much... For choosing me...!)

<<Don't mention it, please don't cry.>>

I would have cried out of joy had I a body.
No talent on anything, no drive to do anything, and yet she deems me worthy.
I think that's a first in my life. No, my life starts now.
Despite my rude thoughts like saying it cliche or template, I feel nothing but gratitude to god.
Thank you. I'm definitely going to meet your expectations and defeat Demon King.

<<Once the Demon King has fallen, you are relieved from duty and lose the ability to be revived. Afterward, I hope you can enjoy your life to the fullest. Well then.>>

The pure white space is filled with golden light.

<<Welcome to the world of 'Paralecia'>>

I couldn't sense god's presence anymore after she said that.
The light gradually dimmed and once it was black all around, I suddenly felt my feet touching the ground.
I have a body. It's such an obvious fact yet I feel a huge sense of relief.
...Huh, haven't I gotten a bit shorter? Ah right, I got summoned here as a 15 year old.

There was nobody in the altar, I could see a magic circle-like thing on the floor and a big dress mirror up front.
Oh, I've really gotten younger... Wait, who the heck is this hot guy!? I ain't no blondie with blue eyes and silky hair!
Heck, he looks so androgynously handsome, I couldn't help but suspect if it's even me for a moment. He's more a hot boy than a hot guy.
....Wait, don't tell me my son's not there. Ah, it is. Thank goodness. I can tell it's there even under my clothes.

<<Oh, god made some adjustments so you can score yourself an easy harem, I see. I say you look both cute and cool, yep.>>

...What's up with this raving incoherent text shown on the Menu screen.
Is this that Menu Function thing? It's kinda different than what I expected. Never thought it's got a personality.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

<<Ah, nice to meet you. I am the artificial personality installed on your Menu Function. Please just call me Menu. Oh oh, you can even add Chan at the end if you want you know?>>

"Nice-to-meet-you-menu-san. And now will you please shut up. It's getting on my nerves."

<<So cruel! You're gonna make me cry! You want me to fill up your screen with crying text you won't see what's in front you!?>>

"Hell no! Quit that, seriously! Heck, what's supporting about you, sure you aren't here to get in my way!?"

What this thing's deal!? This Function sounded super handy when I was told about it, but this installed personality thing totally ruins it!

<<You have to set out alone at first after all~. The default Menu Function only responds at absolute minimum, it's so boring. Feel free to thank god for this service.>>

"Who the hell needs that!!"

Dammit! I knew it all sounded too good to be true! At this rate, my Status must be a mess!

<<Ah, you wanna see your Status? Here you go. Aren't I useful? Fufufu, you can praise me now, capiche?>>

"Sheesh can you be quiet for one sec! Just show it to me!"

Geez, how am I so tired just trying to see my Status.
Ah, but it does the job. Let's see.

...I get that I've got lots of skills, but are those attributes strong?

<<Your attributes are around the same level as an average Combat Job at lv10. Uwaa, so many Skills. Isn't god being too generous with you. Wait, 'optional display', there's still more, I can't believe it.>>

...Looks like I'm pretty strong even at my initial state.
I'm sure I'll get stronger and obtain more Skill with level ups.
...Oh crap, I'm getting excited like never before. Can't stop smirking.

<<Uwaa, he's smirking to himself. Scary. Guard-san, it's this guy over here.>>

"...Would have been perfect if not for this thing..."

Well, I'm sure I'm gonna get used to it. Hopefully, surely.

I don't have a name yet. Might as well put on a new one.
A new life, no, my true life.

"I'm set on my name, it's Neo Raifu."

<<So simple. That will be Neora-chan abbreviated then I guess. Kind of girlish if you ask me, ah ow ow! Please don't pull on the screen! How come you can touch it!?>>

Oh man, I'mma beat the crap of this thing! Dammitall!
The mood's spoiled now!

~~~God's Point of View~~~
...It appears the summoning went well.
Perhaps I overstepped my bounds installing a personality on Menu... W-well, at least he won't be lonely now, y-yep.
...But I'm really such a bad gaslighter.
Both Demon Kings, and Heroes are existences necessary to maintain order of the world.
Demon Kings are created to stop humans from proliferating too much and consuming all available resources, essentially an Arbitrator.
And Heroes are summoned to this world in order to defeat them, in name. Their summoning brings in the enormous resources from earth dwelling in their body, they are Couriers.
When you put it that way, it's as if I'm toying with the lives of people... No, I am in actuality. What just took place in the summoning earlier was me hiding my true intentions behind made-up reasons.
...I do feel sorry for the people and the hero I am deceiving, but there is simply no way to wash my hands off shady means if I wish to maintain this world.
Had he known the truth, he would surely deride me...
The earth god seems to have abandoned his duty to maintain the balance there.
Despite its enormous resources, that world is on the verge of exhausting its physical resources as well as food and yet he doesn't seem like he is going to intervene at all.
That said, it's not like he's apathetic of humans, it's the opposite in fact. He loves humanity so much it borders on abhorrence.
He would observe the lives of every single humans, more than seven billions of them, regardless of who, every single day without fail.
Evil men, neutral men, good men, geniuses, fools, incompetent men, sagacious men, madmen, it doesn't matter who they are, to him they are an object of love and observation, never missing a moment of their joy, sadness, tears, grief, anger and laughter.
A bankrupt ideology where he would never question those people even if their decisions brings about their downfall, which is only a matter of time.
...I would have never chosen to interact with him if not for my need of resources.
And yet, I can never assert that his choice is wrong either. After all, I have brought about the end of many innocent lives through Demon Kings' hands in order to maintain the world.
Ultimately whose choice is the correct one I wonder. God would surely laugh at me.
I do not even have the courage to face my choice.
Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 321
321 Sense of Liberation
It's the exit. The outside is still bright. I squinted at the sunlight after having lost touch of it.
"Oy! We're back! Come and check! We also have some questions!"
Kidd yelled to draw the guard's attention.
The guard noticed and hurriedly put down a ladder before climbing down. He was followed by two more guards, they all stopped in front of us.
"Are you guys adventurer party 'White Fang'? Please sign over here..."
"Please wait a moment. There is something we need to inform you."
Firuna told the guards about how we got raided by 'Ring of Light' as well as the marquis inside the dungeon.
The guards asked what became of the marquis, and she just said that he 'died'.
In order to bury him in the dungeon regardless of his status.
"I can't believe it... But then... We must report this matter to the Adventurer Association. We have to dispatch a corps to investigate..."
"There is no need for that. The association's protocol should also state that matters such as this is to be left unattended. Regardless of the other party's position."
She's pretty much telling them to give up trying to search the marquis's body.
He's getting treated like some random bandit.
"And besides we have no time for that."
"Wha?", the guards looked dumbfounded.
"We have conquered the dungeon. Here is the evidence. As such, this dungeon will collapse once we step out."
She showed them the bag from that time. The guards' face turned pale when they saw the content.
"U-understood ma'am! We will prepare the procedure at once, if you could please wait a moment! Oh, please sign here first!"
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
The guards' attitude had a u-turn. Just goes to show how revered dungeon conquering parties are to the public.
All the more with the size of the core, enough to turn them dead pale. From this exchange alone, I get that White Fang is gonna become even more famous.
(Well, it was me who defeated all the monsters though. Also, these guys are probably gonna faint if they saw that mana crystallization at elven forest.)
Later on, I found out that this was the fastest ever dungeon conquest in recorded history, a huge topic enough on its own but the current me didn't care about that.
In just a bit, six more ladders were set up. Apparently we're to climb them all together.
"If I may ask, was there anybody else who entered the dungeon after the marquis?"
"No, marquis-sama has ordered us to stop any adventurer going in after him. The request was accepted through a formal warrant as well."
'Isn't that an abuse of authority?', I kept that thought to myself.
That marquis must have been the one who forcefully muzzled all previous adventurers. I realized and decided to stop further thinking about that.
This dungeon expedition is over. All that's left to do is to exit this place.
"Heck yeah! This moment really gives you the best sense of liberation."
"Oy, Kidd. Don't let up just yet. You forgot what you said already?"
"Yep, save that until we're done with everything at the association. I do so get you though."
"Let's get a move on. First, gotta finish the procedure here, no?"
"We have arrived at a good stopping point indeed, but it's still too early to relax. After all, there is no guarantee they would believe us."
She must mean the matter with us getting raided and Reidas XII.
I paid it no heed since it got nothing to do with me. Kidd must be feeling excited from getting bathed in the sunlight at last.
I'm in the same boat, so I won't dig at him.
And then, a bit after we climbed up and reached the surface, that event took place.
Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 46
Idle Talk (2) Isekai Guide
<<The biggest difference between this world and earth is the concept of Status.>>
(Status... You mean stuff like strength, speed, and sturdiness?)
<<Yes I believe your understanding is apt... You truly are perceptive.>>
Well, Status is like the bread and butter of RPGs after all.
I'm currently in an interview to decide whether I wanna reincarnate to another world to defeat the Demon King or not.
All the explanations I heard are all so cliched and templated, which makes it easy to understand if I'm being kind, but also boring if I'm being brutally honest.
<<...Are you disappointed?>>
(Ah, sorry, forgot my inner monologue leaks out in this soul only state. Not at all.)
Having your inner voice leaking to other is not nice.
I believe both farcical and true intents are the foundation of communication between people.
To summarize the explanation on Status.
First, for Attributes.
HP (Life Force): Exactly what it says. Signifies one's Hit Point, entirely losing this means death.
MP (Mana): The point necessary to deploys the aforementioned Skill abilities and such. Overusing it leads to making you feel sick, you pass out when it reaches zero after which it'll take from 24 hours up to a week before you wake up.
SP (Stamina): Energy point, some Skill abilities consume this point instead. It's akin to Satiety in roguelike games, eating food will refill it. When it turns to zero, you enter a state of starvation and your HP gradually decreases. Scary.
STR (Strength): Signifies the person's physical strength, usually the basic of attack power. There are weapons and tools unusable until your STR reaches a certain point, so it pays to raise this attribute.
ATK (Attack): The same as STR but added with weapon's offensive capability. The sum total of your attack power.
DEF (Defense): Strongly affected by STR, the more you have the better you defend against attacks. When your DEF is far higher than the opponent's STR, their attacks get nullified.
AGI (Agility): Signifies your swiftness. The higher it is the easier for you to dodge and land attacks. Strongly affected by STR as well.
INT (Intelligence): Signifies your information processing throughput as well as the strength of your magic.
DEX (Dexterity): Signifies how skillful you are with your hands as well as deftness. The higher it is the more effective you handle weapons. Also makes it easier to craft superior equipment and tools.
PER (Perception): Signifies the sharpness of your basic senses, affects your ability to perceive your surroundings and search for enemy. The higher it is the better you react to sudden changes of situation.
RES (Resistance): Signifies your resistance to abnormal status effects such as poison and paralysis. Also, the higher it is the shorter such abnormal status last on you.
LUK (Luck): Your luck. Higher value makes the contents of treasure chests correspond better to your wish and give better drop rate from magic beasts. In battle it makes you easier to gain an advantage in 'Momentum'. Your critical rate so to say.
That's so long.
Well they're pretty much the same stuff you see in most games.
Raising your Basic Level also raises your Attributes, the rate of which depends on your Job. Efforts aka training will also raise them.
Next up, Skills.
Skills are abilities a person can use, they grant a variety of benefits by consuming MP.
For example acquiring 'Swordsmanship' Skill makes you wield swords better, some of its Skill abilities enable its user to unleash a strong repeated slash attack, expand their reach through mana blade, or even send out flying vacuum slashes.
Each Skill has its own level, and raising Skill proficiency by honing them raise this level.
Activities like swinging swords around or using Skill abilities will raise Swordsmanship's proficiency. The rate is better when done during real combat.
By the way, not all of Skills are combat related. There are also Production type Skills like Cooking and Manufacturing, however people with Production Jobs can't learn Combat Job Skills in most cases.
You can choose to learn one Skill you wish regardless of type once your Basic Level reaches 50 though, wonder if I can afford one with my duty to defeat Demon King looming.
As for Jobs, apparently the Skills people have at the time of their coming of age will be the basis for the Job they get, then they go on to take up employment that fit their Job.
By the way, coming of age is at 15. Some kind of ceremony maybe? Oh and I'm going to restart at 15 when I get summoned there. A little bit of redo.
Every single human in that world possesses at least one Skill when they're born, and that Skill usually becomes the basis for their Job.
It's possible to be born with a Production Skill yet choosing a Combat Job or vice versa, but it all depends on your effort to learn a new Skill that fits the Job you want before coming of age.
Your Production Skills will disappear if you pick a Combat Job however.
Also, it's possible to do a Job Change once your Basic Level and Skill Level reach a certain point as well as meeting certain conditions, in short, a Job Evolution.
Apparently my Job is 'Hero'... Me, a Hero huh. What a joke. How'd a mere part-timer get to be a hero.
Hero can use all types of Combat Skills, and their attribute growth rate with each level up surpasses even advanced Jobs, the so-called cheat.
Also, ordinarily, Jobs that deploy magic can't use weapons aside from wands, but this limitation does not exist for Hero. Dang how advantageous is this Job anyway. Good for me though.
Nevertheless, there's still a small fraction of Skills even a Hero can't use, but she told me not to worry over it since they're all super minor... Which only makes me all the more curious.
It's also possible for 'Hero' to undergo a Job Change, with a catch. There's only one choice and the level requirement is very high compared to other Jobs.
I also need to obtain several 'Titles' as a prerequisite. So many elements to speedrun.
You can get this Title thing by completing some conditions like achieving a feat or reaching a certain Basic Level or Skill Level.
There are even Titles that have Passive abilities that affect your attributes or Skills.
As an example, killing a certain number of a specific magic beast will grant you that specific magic beast 'Killer' title which gives a small boost to the damage inflicted on those magic beasts.
There are several Titles required for a Hero to Job Change but she won't tell me about it, saying it's a confidential information. I mean it's more fun to figure it out yourself I guess. But uh, isn't this a world crisis?
Magic beasts are kind of like animals on earth, most dangerous creatures fall into this category.
There are some humanoid magic beasts such as goblins, orcs, and ogres but they're not that intelligent... Classic to the very end huh.
Not all magic beasts are harmful wicked beings as you can obtain food or mats for tools from some of them.
The issue is 'Demons' under Demon King's rule.
Demons are on the same level of intellect as humans and speak the same language, they can also use Skills and they look similar to humans outwardly.
However, they are extremely hostile toward humans and demi-humans, and would commit destruction at human inhabitants through cruel means.
There exists a huge moat between humans and demons that can never be filled up. There is simply no possible path to reconciliation, only a battle to death can result when two sides meet.
They also clearly take pleasure in killing humans so much so that it's likely more about differences in mental make-up than anything else, hence the futility of both sides ever coming to terms.
...I don't intend to swallow this piece of information whole. I'll decide what to do when I witness them myself, I'll move on to elimination if it doesn't seem possible.
<<A Hero will keep getting revived in the form of re-summoning until the day they defeated the Demon King. In case you form companionship with other people, they will also enjoy the privilege.>>
(Return from death huh. Sounds like it's gonna come in handy if I wanna go back from some faraway places, ahahaha.)
<<I can't see your face yet I can tell it's twitching...>>
(How do I check my own Status?)
<<You shall be granted 'Menu Function' when you are summoned to this world. It's a function only people summoned from another world can make use of, hosting many features such as Status Check and information retrieval. The features you can use are limited until you gain more Levels however.>>
(It all sounds more and more like a game.)
<<You may not be able to check your own Titles at low level, thus you may ask those with Appraisal Skills to verify them for you. Is there any other question?>>
(Err, were there other people from earth before me over there?)
<<Yes, several Heroes in the past hailed from Japan even.>>
(Ah, so there were past heroes... Demon Kings too?)
<<Yes, Demon Kings are born in a cycle, they are more akin to natural disasters or calamities than kings. Each time, I would have a Hero summoned to save the world.>>
(And now's my turn eh. Aside from past heroes, is there anybody from earth currently staying in that world right now?)
<<....There is, one person.>>
There was a silence for about 2-3 seconds before she committed to an answer.
Eh, what's with that pause.
