Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 350

350 How Do You Deal With It?

The gatekeeper approached me after I came back with the kids. His eyes full of suspicion.

"I heard what you said earlier. What happened at that hut you found in the forest? I might hafta interrogate you no matter if yer' a 'Second Class' pass holder depending on what you have to say. Let me hear the detail."

As I had nothing to hide, I told him everything.

"Oy... Is that the truth?! We have to contact the castle at once! Hurry! Sorry! Do you have proof for your testimony? Also witnesses. Do you have 'em?"

I pushed two men at him. The two thugs who narrowly escaped with their lives.
They apparently got some rotten luck as they were only knocked unconscious with no apparent injury. I tied them up and brought them here.

"These are the two thugs who got crossed. They'd probably lay it all out if you guarantee their lives at least? Probably won't get much though, these guys look to be disposable pawns."

"So you're saying that drug courier is the key. Why did you let him escape?"

"Hang on, that guy cast magic you know. How do you expect an everyday man like me deal with that? I only got out of it thanks to these thugs shielding me somehow. Guy knocked out two men just like that. Got him to give up and ran when I closed in on him somehow. All due to luck."

I came up with that forced lie. And despite thinking to myself that it didn't sound at all persuasive, the gatekeeper believed me.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"I see, ain't no way to know how the dice roll in that situation for sure... Still, so this is the reason for the recent slum kids' disappearances..."

Everything clicked including what I saw happened with 'Numbers' back then.

(Restrained... Will this lead to a war between the kingdom and the federation? No, it's got nothing to do with me, I'm just a commoner. An aimless wanderer...)

I don't want to get dragged into a gargantuan 'festival', aka war, that's gonna take place.
I tried asking the gatekeeper to see if he's got a solution for my current problem.

"Hey so, these children are victims here yeah? Can we expect supports from the kingdom then? Isn't there a system where you provide work and positions for these kids? You know anywhere that does that?"

"I feel bad for these children as well, but as you can see, I'm just a lowly civil worker. I wish I could do something to help them."

"No, I'm just glad you're a good person. That alone makes me feel better. And you're right, you have no obligation to help these children. Knowing that there's someone like you out there shows not everybody is bad in this world."

Having met all the worst kind of people splintered my heart a bit.
But my impression of this world got raised a bit with this gatekeeper.

(Guess there's always good and bad people no matter the world. It's all the same.)

That was when it hit me. A devilish plan.
However, no telling how long it'll take me to make sure all 45 children get a place if I keep being choosy on how to deal with this matter.

Hence, I'm taking my chance here. Which is.

"Hey so, are you gonna report this emergency directly to the prime minister? Mind delivering a message to the man?"

The gatekeeper had a mix of surprise and confusion on his face before sending a really dire glare my way once I said that.

Skill? Nee yo Sonnamon! Chapter 75

Stop Going for Vital, How Many Times Must I-

She kept running for a few more minutes before we killed the bear beast and had a break.
Reina bit on her pork-cutlet sandwich teary faced. Must be so good it makes her cry.

"Sniff, I mean it is super good yes! But that's not what these tears are for!"

"...Hikaru, that was too much."

"Forgive me..."

Immediate prostration. Pride? None. I've got none of that.
That'd be the least of my worry if Alma snapped. Played around too much.
Alma teased her too, something about gathering her bones, but she didn't think I'd have the bear chase Reina for real. Well, I guess normally you wouldn't...

"And I mean, what was that about anyway!? I thought I was done for when I couldn't run anymore but then there was this loud BOOM noise, and the bear's head popped off!"

"Calm down. I couldn't defeat the thing due to lack of firepower the last time so I devised up a new dangerously high powered technique, that was it."

"What do you mean by 'dangerously high powered'!? ...Well okay, I demand seconds to make up for your bullying."

"Here you go. The meat under the bread is deep fried, careful you don't scald your tongue."

"Whaai, looks so good, no wait, how is the meat fried when you didn't cook? Where did you take that out from just now!? It just appeared on your hand out of thin air!"

"Oh yeah, haven't told you about my Item Bag huh. I can use an Item Bag like function without external assistance. It's got unlimited capacity and time stops inside. How handy is that?"

"...Even just that completely breaks the rules, is that not a Skill?"

"Apparently not. My Skill tab on my Status still shows unobtainable."

"...Hah, did you use this to win that eating contest, Kajikawa-san?"

"That's cheating, I don't do that. I ate all that food fair and square."

"Ah, then, wait that makes it weirder... How many portions did you eat back then anyway."

"Reina, just think that anything goes with Hikaru and you'd have a much easier time processing what he does. Thinking deeper only tires you out."

"That's just giving up..."

I'm aware how incomprehensible I am sometimes but isn't that too much.

"Well, putting that aside."

"Ah, he's so obviously changing the subject."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

Reina kept staring at me.
I mean it's gonna take us hours if we keep going on about my absurdities...

"...Now that you've learned energy control, it's time to move on to mana control, or so I'd like to but let's stop for today after another light spar."

"Eh, why?"

"First you need to be able to use energy control in actual combat. Mana control is gonna take you quite a bit of time while you can learn how to defend yourself relatively quick with energy control."

"So like a last resort for when I can't run away?"

"Yeah. Probably not enough against Combat Job people, but better than nothing right?"

"Hope I never have to use this last resort..."

I hope so too. At least try to avoid fighting humans until she's graduated from Apprentice-class Job.
Weak magic beasts are one thing, but human enemy are on a different level. Demons are even worse.
Well, I haven't been in many fights against people myself. At best, it was against Dasomething, and those two Skill-deficient guards of pig noble... Huh? Am I even qualified to teach her?
...We could ask guild veterans to teach her proper self-defense but that's gonna limit her to average techniques. Although it's probably a good idea still once she's grown enough.
I'd like something that are usable against stronger enemies. Reina's arsenal is presently limited to some low level Skills and energy control.
And also a dagger made from High Cave Bear fang. Its ATK rivals that of Alma's mithril bladed steel sword, way too strong. Think it's about time to upgrade Alma's weapon. But our budget.

After an aftermeal break, I have Reina spar with me.
I said spar, but it's intended to check her techniques and more like a play fight.
Reina has her dagger, I'm barehanded. Frankly, I'm scared but with my whole body wrapped in mana cushion and my HP buffer, I should be fine.
I also wrap myself in soft mana whenever I attack Reina, she shouldn't get hurt much either.
Then when she's practicing with Alma, I plan to make them use wooden weapons. I can heal them even if they get hurt though, no worries.

Peshi pashi

"Kajikawa-san, don't you have any advice for me?"

"Eh I dunno, I mean I'm neither a martial artist or a dagger user. Can only give you this: practice makes perfect."

Bishi bashi

"There's no feedback whenever I hit you, they even get repelled sometimes."

"Well when you're so obvious, I flick off those attacks with mana. A head-on attack whenever you see a chance is easy to block, you gotta mix in feints and quickly strike with energy control added, be creative."

"Oh really, I got you!"

Gosu!! Bishii!!

"Ow ouchhhhhhhhhh!!?"

"Also, if you aim for my balls just because it won't hurt me thanks to my mana armor, I'm gonna flick your forehead raw, mana cushion omitted... Like seriously, quit it with that. My HP's gonna come crashing down if I get hit for real."

"T-that hurt so much... That was no normal forehead flick..."

"Yeah and I held back. I'm gonna keep increasing the power if you keep aiming for my balls."

"I won't do it again..."

This training involves no pain or wounds in general, might be a tad soft but it should be fine for a starter.
...Well, we're gonna need to gradually introduce pain over time though. For Reina, Alma and me.
Oh man. But you can't not get hurt in real combat. Gotta bear with it. Oh maaan.

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 349

349 Trouble Come and Go

The kids had their meal. Their gazes were fixated at me.

(Oh crap... I went and overdid it again... They've gotten attached now...)

It must look like I produced meat out of nowhere from their point of view.
When in reality I went around looking for prey in Accelerated state for around an hour.
Naturally they couldn't have known, their eyes popped open as I threw all that meat in the pot.

I gathered lots of fruits I put all over the hut as well.

(Now then, what now... They're no longer in danger at least...)

First, I made the weakened and starved kids eat the meal and let their condition stabilize in the hut.
They're looking fine now, not in immediate danger anymore.

"What do I do about this? Should I take them back to the kingdom? Shoving them on Raine... might be too much."

I'd have liked to just disappear from this hut but I'm not that heartless.
Neither am I cold enough to just toss them back as homeless kids.
I mean I just managed to avoid having to take care six children and it all went faster than expected, might as well drill these kids on survival handbook too.

(Stuff like fruits and edible plants. Wonder if there's a river or a lake nearby?)

Might be a bold plan, but this wouldn't be my first rodeo.

"Alright! You kids, look here. Memorize these fruits well. Here, c'mere here. I'll tell you how to identify this one. Gather round. We've got edible plants too."

Afterward, I drilled the knowledge about food gathering to these kids for about two hours.

(Also how to secure protein... and cooking... which means I should leave my cooking utensils here?)

There's no end to stuff that needs preparation if I start thinking what happens after I leave.

"Ha~. We just parted ways and all, but I guess I should go tell Raine and the other kids... and push this on them?"

I left the kids in the hut. Instructed them to wait there as I call more people.
Also told them to make their own food if they're hungry.

===  ==  ===
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
Thus I waited for about 30 minutes in front of the gate. Raine and the six kids showed up.
Why was I even there? Acceleration.
The gatekeeper told me they hadn't come back when I asked if he saw them.

"Eh? Why? Or rather, what's the matter, you look troubled..."

Raine wondered. The kids themselves don't seem particularly ruffled.
I have no idea why they're standing in a neat row saluting me though. Guess I shouldn't call them kids anymore since I told them they're independent now.
Thus I gave them the name, 'Numbers', in my mind.
The prey they hunted can be seen bulging out a sack they're carrying. Three of them.
Getting this result in just two days, I tremble at their skill. Is it cheat?

As I tried not to overthink it, I beckoned them to where I stood in front of the gate.

"I'll make this short. I'm asking you to take one more group of children under your custody. They're in a hut a bit farther ahead from the place you got attacked. There's 45 kids in total with the same circumstances as these guys."

Raine kept flapping her mouth open and shut without making a sound.
Not sure how long she froze, meanwhile the kids didn't even budge.
Once she came back to her sense, Raine panicked.

"I can't take any more kids! I only have debt to these six you know?! I can't take any more!"

Fair point. Hence, I asked her this.

"Do you have any good idea how to help them? Like recruitment drive at the hunter guild, or maybe you know hunters looking for pupils. Anywhere that needs manpower?"

I'm not asking someone to care for the entire group. It's fine if they go separate ways, normal even.
Hence me urging Raine about it.

"...I'll do all I can to help out, but I can't guarantee every one of them will be getting help... I'll ask around if you're fine with that... Just don't expect much okay? They're like these kids right? There's nobody eccentric enough to care for slum kids..."

Thus I turned to Raine to look for good places. It seemed hopeless though. Told her to stop if she can't find anybody willing to take those kids in.
The six kids are going to register at the hunter guild so they can support themselves. With Raine as the guarantor of course. Seeing the game they hunted, the guild's probably gonna welcome them with open arms.
I ended up going back to the hut to fetch the kids back to this gate.

Kajikawa-sensei's Jolly Lecture on Energy Control

We summed up our story so far to Reina.
How we were active in Daijel, got involved in a Stampede and got ourselves in trouble with the pig noble which prompted us to escape here.
Also how I'm a human from another world, can't use Skills at all and can directly control mana, lifeforce and energy instead.

"...To be honest, it's hard to believe any of that, but when I imagine how it's all Kajikawa-san's, I can sort of see it."

"Oh and the Soarer I mentioned in the Stampede story? That's me. Found out I could fly around while I was testing mana control, so I participated under a fake alias."

"By fly, like in the sky and stuff!? I dunno if I can believe that one..."

I floated myself while staying in a lying down position.
I'd probably look like some sacred guru had I crossed my legs.

"...See? Or what, want me fly around somewhere unpopulated?"

"Eeeeeh.... How are you doing that anyway. I want to think that I've grown accustomed to Kajikawa-san's common sense breaking antics, but this is just..."

"Un, it's like what's even going on here. I could only laugh when I saw him do that the first time."

So that was when Alma laughed for the first time. I thought it was when we formed our party for sure.
...What's this immeasurable sense of disappointment I feel.

"That was when we defeated those Bladewings huh, sure takes me back. We don't need a Spark Wolf Horn to get over that situation now. Anyway, forget about the past for now. So, while I don't expect you to fly around, I want you to learn direct mana, and energy control to help you in battle."

"...Eh?"

"Your training is far from over. You've got the Skills for your of age Job yeah, but your actual combat ability is too low. Which is frankly expected at your stage, but then any trouble could put you in danger. Your Status won't see a drastic change even after you've come of age. So now, your priority is to obtain the means to defend yourself, even if we have to break the rules a bit."

"Hikaru, obtaining instant strength when you still lack combat experience does not truly make one strong."

"Agreed. Hence you'd be training with me and Alma on the sides. It's gonna be much tougher than ever, can you endure it?"

"I won't survive this world if I can't endure it, right? Then 'yes' is the only answer."

"Oh, you do get it. That means tomorrow we start, don't break a leg tho'."

"Ooh~."

"What's up with you two tension. Wait 'don't break a leg', are we doing this seriously or not?"

"Well I don't mind if you go hard at it, but you might end up dying for real if you made a mistake adjusting energy control. You'd probably want to take it easy."

"This training sounds way more brutal than I imagined!? I'm getting scared now!"

With mana control, you only pass out when you run out of MP which can be replenished.
But using up your energy turns your State into Starvation where your HP gradually decreases, let this be for a long time and you'd die.
Not like it's easy to use up energy though. Once SP gets to 10, the speed in which it naturally declines slows down drastically, so you won't die of hunger that easily.
However, apparently the cost of energy some Skills use won't change, so one must take care not to use those Skills when you're low on SP.
Well, she can learn all that during training. Time to get a shut eye.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

The day after.
Presently, we're in an area with relatively few magic beasts inside the magic beast cave, linking hands in hands to help Alma and Reina in their energy control training. It looks a bit surreal, like we're forming a human ring.
I think energy control is relatively easier to learn than mana control.
Mana control requires you to image a precise control of your body, while energy control is less stringent.
I mean, the concept of both mana and energy control are very vague in itself. Better that way though since thinking too deep about it would negatively affect your control.

"Nn, I've gotten a good grasp on it."

"So fast! I still can't do it right at all!"

"Well, Alma has learned mana control after all. The principle behind them are similar. No surprise she learned energy control quick."

"I'd like to learn lifeforce control as well."

"No. That one reduces your life span, unless it's me."

"!?... Are you alright Hikaru, haven't you used that a few times already!?"

"Yea. The HP shown on my Stats isn't really linked to my body so I don't feel a thing, no pain or even a tickle, when it's reduced. But if people besides me do that, the act of healing with HP is akin to taking a chunk off your flesh and transferring it elsewhere, even if you don't feel it yourself."

"No pain even when your HP is reduced, Kajikawa-san is really a bundle of wonder..."

Well, she could probably use Lifeforce Search without any issue, but the risk is still too high to teach her.
Alma has no need for it once she's learned recovery magic anyway.

"Is there a reason you're prioritizing me to learn energy control over mana control?"

"Yeah, mana control is a bit more complex than energy one. Also, your current MP pool is too small, while SP gives a huge temporary buff even when you use relatively little, lets you to flee from dangerous opponents."

"So I'm still running away in the end..."

"Don't think you can fight for real at least until you're of age. Honestly, even a Lv1 goblin is a good match to you right now. You really don't wanna get surrounded by multiple of them. They're seriously scary, like for real."

"You ever been surrounded, Kajikawa-san?"

"Sure had, it was super terrifying. I'm still traumatized even now. I'd have been dead if not for Alma, my attributes were all zero back then."

"Despite of that, you punched those goblins dead, I had always been curious about that."

"To me Kajikawa-san is curious enough now..."

"Quit saying it like I'm some sort of monster or a weirdo."

"Aren't you?"

"Aah, I sense three High Cave Bears deeper inside, wanna test out your mastery on Energy Control by playing tag with them? I'm sure you'd get really good when it's a matter of life or death."

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!!"

Thus we chatted about nothing while continuing our training... training? Wonder when she'll learn it for real.
Mana control aside, having her master energy control asap is what's good for her. I might have to go spartan if she's not making any progress.

"Ah, seems one of the bears is coming over. Welp, there's no way you coulda outrun the thing without energy control~ What do now~."

"Hiiie!? I'm so so done playing chase with bears!!"

Reina ran off explosively while yelling out loud. Fast.
Whoa? She's buffing herself with energy as she yells. This kid's got a bright future ahead of her.

"Yep, that's how you do it, keep maintaining the buff while you run or else you might get eaten up."

"Noooooo!! Save me before it comes to that!!"

"Reina, go get 'em, I'll gather your bones if you let up."

"Alma-san, please don't go along with him!!"

"Hahaha, what a peaceful day."

Alrighty, she's getting the hang of it quickly.
Next up, mana control. Guess we can take our time for that one.
Now then, I'm sure she's starving after all that running, I'm gonna go prepare our lunch once I take care of that bear.

348 Getting Dragged Just the Way It Is

'When did he...', the courier man whispered as he glared at me. Sound of someone swallowing saliva resounded.

"Uh well? I just did? Forget that, are you gonna answer my questions? Or not? But well, I get you've got your own circumstances so even if you won't, no, can't give it to me straight, I don't mind. I'm not gonna force it outta you either way."

The courier man seemed to interpret my reply as me being reasonable, he put on a smile as he straightened his back.

"So you will let me go if I give you intel? I shall tell you anything if you abide by that. What would you like to know?"

I did want to know some things. But I thought better of it.

"...Hm? Thinking again, hearing your story means no turning back isn't it? I don't want to get involved in this mess. So yeah, you can go now. Your plan ends in failure. Just be grateful you're not dead at least."

I've got the rough gist of this matter, I don't need to know the whole story.
That's just gonna set up a flag.
No point to it anymore. I'm probably getting dragged in this mess whether I heard it or not.

(Aah, what to do with all these kids... I guess I gotta take their collars off at least, and also give them food?)

What's the federation plotting up to kingdom? Probably a war. If what they said is true.
All without a good reason, or a declaration. A blitzkrieg. War of aggression.
This must be part of the strategy. A plan which was crushed by someone as insignificant as me.

What's more important is the children, I can't just 'Okay then. Run along now.' and abandon them here.
I lost interest with the courier man as my head was filled with the children's safety.

The courier man used that chance to ran out of the door in an jiffy. His movement was fluid.
As fluid as his parting threat.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"Damn you! Don't think you'll get away with this! I've memorized your face! Dead to all pest! Your day is numbered, cower in fear until that time comes!"

Man, do these types of baddies always have to have the last word or something?
I ignored him and turned at the kids.

"Line up kids, I'm gonna take off your collars... Don't be afraid. I'm not here to... Well whatever."

I couldn't afford to make any more verbal promise recklessly so I shut my mouth and touched one of the kids' collar. It came off just like that.
The children reacted quickly when they saw that. They lined up in front of me without any argument.

"Are all slum kids trained in this stuff or something? I can't find the punchline..."

They had all their collars removed smoothly. It took quite a bit. Some of the freed kids wept, some hugged each other.
There's 45 of them in total. Quite a lot. Some of these kids are losing strength from malnutrition as we speak.
Having no choice, I started making soup on the spot.

A stock soup using the leftover bones from yesterday's Forest Seekers.
The kids were staring at me without making a sound as I cooked.
I went to gather some wild grass outside as the fire settled in. To get as much garnish as I could.
Can't let the soup just be water and bones. I spoke to the kids who looked like they still had some strength.

"Oy, go gather these wild grass if you have strength left. You'd help your stomach by helping me."

I gently taught them what the wild grass looks Their eyes were serious.
The older kids' survival instinct kicked in and several of them went out to gather the grass.
I opted to tend the boiling pot and scoop out the scum.

(Good thing I kept the bones I guess? But eh, saving them just to make broth is a bit~.)

I stirred the pot while vowing this is the last time I do it.
Then I put in the wild grass the kid gathered. The pot still looked lonesome so I had the bright idea of looking for meat.
I'll get back in an flash by employing Acceleration anyway. The water is never gonna boil past the pot mouth even with the fire on.

(Alright let's do it, I'll make it my meal as well.)

'And some fruits as well', at this point of time, I never imagined I'd end up going too far.

No Turning Back Now

Afterward, we dragged the drunk old man to the guards and got him thrown in the cell.
He barely resisted after he came to, probably due to all the kicking on his vital.
He tried to utter nonsense at the guard station, 'I'm Reina's father, I'm just trying to take my daughter back from those black haired pair', but as there were several witnesses watching him punch Reina as well as Reina's own intense revulsion of him, nobody took it seriously.
Well, the guards did warn Reina that she went too far even if it was for self-defense, otherwise, it all went smoothly.
The drunkard is gonna be in confinement for a while. Apparently he's got several offenses besides punching Reina, so he could end up spending years in jail.
Dunno if that's light or heavy but eh, I'm just wasting my time overthinking stuff about that trash.

We got back to our inn and had dinner before reconvening in my room to talk about our future plan.
The other guests were staring at us when the two got into my room, I ignored them. Not like we're doing anything dubious.

"Have a seat you two. Don't just stand there."

"Un."

"...Yessire."

Alma and Reina sat on the bed.
...No no, we're not doing anything dubious okay?

"First off, Reina, are you fine with that? Isn't he still your father, despite everything?"

"...Yes, it's fine. He 'was' my father, but I can't even bear to look at him now. Reconcile? Please. Just remembering all the terrible stuff he did after losing his arm makes me sick to my stomach. I still hate his guts even now, but I just want to have nothing to do with him no more."

"...I see."

It's heavy. Too heavy.
The mood will only get worse talking about this topic, let's change it.
Eh Alma? What are you doing hugging Reina?

"...Just say it if it's hard. Don't bottle it up."

"A-Alma-san..."

"You'd keep doing rash things like Hikaru if you try to solve everything on your own, rely on other too."

"...Thank you."

Reina tearfully hugged Alma back. How precious... Forgetting Alma's nonchalant dissing for a moment.

"Aah, so uh, can we get back to the topic?"

"Y-yessire."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

It's a bit awkward but I forcefully course corrected.
I mean they'd keep at it forever if I don't, and it'll be a new day before we know it.

"Despite what I told you earlier, it's not actually binding if you swear to forget everything I said and did including powering you up. Your future is in your hands. You can still turn back now, what do you say?"

"...."

Reina kept staring at me in silence.
Hm, guess it's not something you can decide right away.

"You don't need to give your reply now. There's still time until your come of age, you can think all about it until-"
"I won't swear."

Reina interrupted me.

"If you two leave me, I'm gonna talk to everyone that Kajikawa-san can't use Skills yet easily beat up magic beasts, and that he can buff people Status too."

"Wha, R-Reina...?"

"So please let me join your two party, I'll do stuff like chores or anything. It'll be a headache if you don't you know~?"

...Of all things, this girl decided to threaten us. I get that she's just half joking though. She's pretty tough.

"Kajikawa-san is super kind, you're thinking seriously about my future. But you should ask about my opinions too. To me, the path I want to take is an adventure with you two."

"Are you even aware about our goal? It's nothing grand you know?"

"You want to travel to all kinds of places, eat all kinds of food and live life to the fullest right? That's just the best. I can't think of a better way to live. I wanna be a part of that too. So, please. Take me along with you two."

She's full in on our aimless goal huh. Are you sure.
Thanks to all the trouble the demon king and demons are causing all over the places, that goal is needlessly tough now too. Damn you demon king, break a ribcage will ya.

"...There's no turning back. Are you sure?"

"Bring it on."

"Then let's register you in our party in ten days after your come of age. Nice to be working with you from now on, Reina."

"Y-yessire! Thank you for giving me the chance!"

"So now it's time to tell you about us and what you gotta do from now on, fufufu."

"H-hiie, y-your face's scaring me!?"

"Hikaru stop making that face."

I'm not scary. Really truly.
Joke aside, now that Reina is poised to join our party, it's exposition time.
No turning back for me too. Gotta steel myself since if she betrayed us, there'd be lots of painful stuff to do.

347 What is Adept?

"Who goes there!", the two thugs shouted again.
Contrary to them, the courier man is looking at me with zero reaction.

"Hm? What's the point telling you that. Didn't you hear me? Shouldn't it be clear to you lot that I'm not on your side?"

I'm standing in the doorway blocking their exit. I won't let them escape.
There's only one window here and it's not big enough to fit an adult.
Besides, the thugs probably never had any chance of leaving this room to begin with.

"You... What're you doing here..."

The lanky man quickly took a knife from his bosom pocket. The big man equipped knuckle duster-like objects.
The courier man is observing calmly. Like he's not perturbed at all.

"Who is this man? I take it he's an obstacle to our plan. You two seem to know him..."

"This guy got in our way during our last brat hunting. Guy's pretty good... Caught us off guard that time, but that ain't gonna happen again..."

The lanky man replied to the courier man.
The courier man seemed to have inferred that I'm alone. Must have deemed that I'm no threat.
But he grew a bit more wary when 'pretty good' word was thrown out.

"Then I shall lend you an aid in order to dispose of him for good. I'll let you take the front."

There's not much space between them and this door. I'd have to get out if I want to dodge the thugs.

So the courier man must have assessed. But he's miscalculated one thing. I have 'power'.

The two thugs gradually approached before rushing in at once.
And just as the thugs got between me and the courier man.

"Blow away! Eliminate all that stands in your way! 'Destroyer Sphere'!"

The magic 'cast' by the courier man was intended to blow me away along with the two thugs.
The man had never planned to let the thugs go for sure.
Part of the plan. He was waiting for the right time to execute them and deemed my entry to be that time.
Three birds with one stone, the right amount of power and range. The magic should have been more than capable to kill all three of us.
Should have been, as I don't plan to go along with it.

(I mean it's so predictable. The courier man is obviously more a bigwig than the thugs.)

Same old story. Employ dregs of society in the land they're bringing chaos to. Sweet talk them into following your orders.
Then once they've outlived their usefulness, remove them from the picture.
The difference in 'air' and 'elegance' between those thugs and the courier man is so obvious.

(It's a classic development. Why did I never consider the possibility of finding myself getting dragged into one after all the crap I've been through?)

This must be one of the 'template' developments, no? But I'm not obliged to follow it to a T.
I'm no longer in front of the thugs. I've accelerated and gotten away.
None the wiser, the courier man grinned as if saying, 'That went well'.
I'm still inside accelerated world right now, which affords me to observe him.
I'm also using this chance to observe the mass of blue magical light that has stopped midair.

(Hmm? Well well... Is this simply a dense form of mana that exerts a physical property?)

That 'magic ball' thing you see often in fantasy work.
But this courier man must be a mage if he can cast this.

(This man just shot a magic that can blow through three men right? He must be quite an adept, or not?)

Mary of 'White Fang' is the only other person I can compare him to.
But she's got loads of equipment to raise her magic output, so I dunno if the comparison is apt.
Elves who wield Spirit Magic are too far above them as well, I can't really tell this courier man's ability.

(Considering the guy's got entrusted with this mission, he must be quite reliable at least.)

He said something about 'Federation'. However, I can't conclude yet if this scheme is truly concocted by the federation or not.
It might have been part of the plan as a smokescreen. There's no end to it if I suspect everything, yet doesn't mean I can just blindly believe what they said either.

I undid acceleration after having my fill of observing the magic.
A moment later, the thugs looked surprised at my sudden disappearance before immediately getting struck by the magic in their back.
The thugs got blown outside, sprawling on the ground.
That magic ball had enough power to easily knock out two men.
The courier man looked at the two who didn't even let out a groan like they were trash before his face warped in anger.

"Dammit! How could this be!? That should have been perfect! How isn't that man dead?!"

The courier man seems to have lost sight of me who's simply standing behind him now.
He's too agitated to notice me.
No I guess it's the natural outcome, nobody can track me in accelerated state.

"Hey? I've got lots of questions for you. Though eh, I probably won't get an answer."
