Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 208

208 Light a Fire Under Your Rear!

Looks like she finally got it, but then she started pondering.

"I do not wish to be a monarch. Nor will I stand becoming a tool. What do I want to accomplish..."

It wasn't something she couldn't answer, it seemed more like this was the first time anyone asked her that.

"I wish to save our citizens. That was the reason I studied as much as I could. Flood control, public works, budget management, all kinds of things. I would like to find an employment somewhere I could make use of my knowledge."

"Aren't you a royalty? Normally you're the one giving orders to people who can do all those. Where's the need to take it up yourself? It's way too inefficient."

"This kingdom is rotten to the core. So much so I witnessed an act of bribery soon after I arrived here. And it was done in the middle of a hallway anybody could pass by."

I'm done with polite speech. Yet the princess didn't get angry. She really doesn't seem to mind at all.
Thus I threw away all decorum in my words.

"That's not something you can change by yourself. If everybody around you is in it, forget making a change, you alone is just gonna get crushed. People like those hate the honest type. They'd go straight for your jugular. You've put exactly zero thought behind that wish of yours."

The princess's apparently pretty smart but not street smart.

"I have been adopting a false persona all my life. Nobody is willing to listen to me."

"Man, you sure are quick to give up yet love to cling on particulars. Just start now then. Lay out the groundwork. It's not too late. Besides don't you have an achievement already. Just quit with the act and have a direct talk with the king."

"...What are you talking about? Achievement?"

"Go straight to the king and tell him everything you've been hiding. Won't most of your problems go away just by doing that? You just gotta lead the conversation right."

"I am completely lost as to what you are referring to. Could you please explain to me concretely."

And she doesn't think about it. She might have studied too much her way of thinking is unbalanced.
By giving advice like this, I'm prepared to go all in on this issue.
Even if it meant getting dragged into the jumbled mess of the kingdom.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"Drag the earlier raid's perpetrator to the king and tell him the truth. That includes how you successfully revitalized that village. How it's all thanks to your commands. Sell him how capable you are."

"I cannot possibly commit to that! What are you thinking?!"

Thus the princess who still hasn't grasped the situation she's in protested.

"Going at it piecemeal by piecemeal after being incognito all your life ain't gonna do jack shit. Now that you've been cornered to this point, you ain't gonna get out of this if you don't aim for a clean sweep. Your hard work won't bring you to your wish until you grab the nation's top brass by the scruff of their necks. Go ahead and struggle all you want, best you get is still gonna be far from finish line. You don't have the leisure to slowly find more allies while being on your best behavior either. You've gotta make a huge reversal. Not a sink or swim. This is simply your best chance to drive the biggest stake down. There's no more leeway to even wait a bit. Bum rush it to the end or else it's your end. You've no time to hesitate either. Push through with your ego and haughtiness here. Make it your last performance. Otherwise that's that for you. Simple as."

I only know a bit of the princess's situation, but it's crystal clear that she's at a critical juncture.
She's got no future if she doesn't take the plunge now. They've sent assassins her way already. She'd have died for sure if I did nothing back then.
And that would leave me feeling like crap every time I got up in the morning.

What I said is akin to a threat. But it's not in jest.
Doing nothing after this would only result in more assassins coming.
And dead would be this princess's fate sooner or later.
She doesn't seem to understand the gravity of her situation if I didn't say all that.
She's gonna misunderstand again if I don't say it outright.
Thus I did. Here.

"If you wanna die without accomplishing anything, feel free to. But if you're gonna go for a kamikaze, gun blazing and all... I'mma lend you a hand. In for an inch and all."

"...Kamikaze, gun blazing... What are those?"

Yeah, I'm not gonna see eye to eye with this princess.

207 Narration Comes Unannounced. Eh? Now?

"I would like you to be my bodyguard. As my life is likely going to be in constant danger, you would stay by my side at all time. 'Ordinary' guards are not reassuring enough. I wish to have a bodyguard who bears absolute strength."

I almost screamed back, 'are you being sarcastic?' but held back. The princess couldn't have possibly read my mind.

"What do you need my help for? I want to hear the real reason."

I knew she'd ultimately ask me to be her guard. I've given up on that.
Yet this is something I need to know.
But it seems my question isn't obvious enough, the princess looked puzzled.

"Why would you ask that?"

"Ah, guess that wasn't clear huh. Err. Is guarding you all I need to do?"

After seemingly digesting my question, the princess nodded before and started to talk.

"My mother had gone through a similar assassination attempt once. Her life was spared, but afterward in order to distance herself from the royal palace, she went and led a secluded life in a rural village taking me with her under the pretense of recuperation."

The princess started narrating her past. I listened in silent.

(Ah, there'll be no escape once I find out about her situation huh. Guess I'm already knee deep in this mess.)

I'm bracing myself for a long winded story seeing as the princess has 'switched' on.

"She would keep reminding me to 'Play the fool so other people lose interest on you' as I grew up. And thus I started acting as an egoistical and ignorant princess."

The princess continued on.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
"There is a danger of catching the king's, my father's attention, if I am known for my wisdom regardless of my succession right. And that would result in my siblings treating me as a thorn on their side. That was the reason I kept up with the acting all my life, but even after all that, someone still sent assassins. Were it not for you, I and even all the guards would have lost their lives. Their formation was for a massacre."

The wagon still seems so far from the Kingdom. The princess's story seems far from over.

"I was called back to the royal palace after my mother passed away from an illness, and soon afterward I made a visitation to a certain poor village. I could not bear to look at the terrible spectacle in that village and decided to make use of the knowledge I had been secretly studying for a construction plan. I directed the soldiers who came with me to exterminate pest around the village and such. My exploits went so well they caught on my acting."

Her long seemingly unending 'explanation' continued.

"Today we were just on our way back from another visitation to see the results of my plan in that village. I have yet to find out who sent the assassins. But I am now an actress in the ugly war for the throne."

Just when I thought that was the end, she added one more thing.

"And that is why I wish for you to lend me your power. Will you help me?"

"Way too long! How'd my question compel you to narrate your life story? What the hell."

The princess looked confused at my reaction.

"What I'm asking is if you just want to survive, then you could've just get married to some powerful noble and declared your right to throne annulled! You'd probably at least stay alive even if it means becoming a 'tool' for the royal family."

I had no idea if the stuff with nobles in my world applied here, but I still went on it.
I'm still not done yet. If I don't make it perfectly clear here, she's gonna misinterpret again and go on another long exposition trip.

"What do you want to do with your saved life as a royalty? What are you gonna use that life for? I'm asking you about your 'resolve'. Once you're safe, then what?"

I'm a bit fed up having to listen to that long narration when that's all I wanted to hear.

206 Chain Abnormalities

"A commoner like me who has never as much as held a sword cannot possibly be capable of saving your highness."

For the time being, I put up a resistance, but then the princess said something unexpected yet again.

"...It appears that you intend to conceal your strength. Then I promise you here that I shall not speak about it to a soul."

She's not even listening to me as she keeps on marching to her own beat. So I made another bet.

"To begin with, why did your highness pick me of all the people there?"

I must not admit to this princess's 'conviction'. All for the sake of ordinary. I chose my words carefully as I pressed on.
It's easy to just say yeah it's me. But I don't want that.

"Allow me explain as to why I am convinced that you  are someone with power. And if my explanation is to your liking, would you be willing to speak casually with me? Please no need for polite speech."

Thus the princess started.

First of all, around 50 assailants were defeated all at once.
Something like that has never been depicted even in legends or fairy tales.
'Something' far beyond abnormal must be at work.

Secondly, the abnormal appearance of a man who came out of the stagecoach.
Black hair, black eyes, the princess had never seen anyone like that in her life before.
Another abnormality on top of an abnormality.

Thirdly, she couldn't sense even the slightest bit of mana from this man.
All of those who are born to royalty undergo training to see mana.
She's no exception and she could not see any mana from this abnormal man.

"Oy... wait a sec. What's up with that ability to see people's mana. I need more detail on that."
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
I forgot to act 'ordinary' there. I couldn't just let that stuff about seeing mana slide.

"All living beings have traces of mana around them with no exceptions. No matter how small of a creature. In order to see this mana, one must undergo a training regime. Anybody could do it. Although the training itself is quite harsh. Those of royalty must be able to see their opponents along with their mana. As you can perceive their emotion through their mana. It makes for a good judgment of character."

That clinched it. I have absolutely zero mana after all.

"Humans always leak out mana at all time. This leaked mana cover the entirety of their body. It is possible to prevent this leakage through training, but never completely. It's also possible to emit a huge amount of mana. But my observation of you during the time you assisted the mercenaries revealed your abnormality. I am unable to see your mana in the slightest, in fact, I cannot sense even the most minute amount when we are this close."

I started getting dejected hearing her keep repeating 'abnormal'. Everything I did had backfired.

"Factoring all of those together, the abnormality that took place here cannot have been 'ordinary'. After giving it some thought, it's simple to conclude that it was the work of an abnormality. The fact that the sole person in charge of the raid being let alive also helped to form this conclusion. It was done by a being with 'reason' and 'comprehension'. You were the only one who fit that description."

Everything I did in my quest for 'ordinary' ended up convincing this perceptive princess.
But it was already over anyway by the time I couldn't stand not to jump out of the stagecoach.

(I mean, I may not know the whole picture but some obviously villainous men were attacking a wagon and all, you know? How could I overlook that. As a human. I have the power to save and all.)

Pretending to look the other way would only make me regret it later. All the more if that ended with innocent lives lost.
I must have been flustered at the time. I should have done more and better to camouflage myself.
I took it too lightly and acted carelessly because I couldn't see her nor was I aware of her, which resulted in those abnormalities.
All those abnormalities stacked up overwrote my 'ordinary'. It's only natural for the princess to trace it all back to me.
My fixation on 'ordinary' ironically ended up being the thing that convinced this princess on me having the power to help her. I have no word to that.

"...Okay. That's enough. So? What do you need my help for? Go on and get to the point."

Thus I asked her to press on while feeling down inwardly, I'm getting dragged into a mess no matter what I do it seems.

205 Mask

I'm inside a wagon. A royal wagon complete with its luxurious interior and fluffy chairs.

(But how! My disguise was perfect and they couldn't have known it was me who took care of those bandits. And yet this 'princess' made a beeline straight toward me with pinpoint accuracy!?)

I was considering my options when told no objection.
How to deal with that as someone who aims for ordinary.
Yes, an ordinary man would rarely have the chance to talk to high class people. Let's go from that.
Thus, the 'ordinary' me should say this while looking flustered.

"Your royal highness, I am but a humble birth. I beg your pardon. I am afraid my lack of decorum would only slight my lady. Please have mercy on me."

"Did you not hear me. Just be quiet and come."

She countered with another egoistical princess's remark, and now I'm stumped.
I could physically get away from this place. But that's not 'ordinary'. I won't pick that option.
The princess's guards all had varying reactions, from looking flustered to having bitter faces.
After thinking a bit, avoiding this event as an 'ordinary' man is simply impossible.

"Understood. It is as you wish, my lady."

That was the only thing I could say to break the silence. And thus I got in her wagon.

<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

Just as the escort knights were done preparing and about to depart, what seemed to be the leader voiced his opinion.

"Princess, as the one in charge of your protection I cannot allow someone of unknown origin to stay with you right after that attack."

"Morf, I said it's fine. Or are you saying I have no 'eyes'?"

"...I have nothing more to add if you would go that far. But please know that I shall cut that person down if I deem him a danger."

"That will not happen. Hear me? Such things will not happen."

The group departed after the princess said that twice.
The wagon ran so smoothly with minimal shocks. The insides were quite spacious. Yet it felt cramped to me.
I'm the only other person besides the princess here. There's not even a maid or an attendant.

(This is mentally draining. Just what's gonna happen to me...)

This event of princess personally invited me over to her wagon will definitely develop into another pain in the rear.
As I was thinking that, the princess spoke. In an entirely unexpected way.

"I understand that this sudden invitation must have come as a shock. First allow me to apologize for that. Please forgive me."

Wha? I could only let that out before freezing.
I mean this is a completely different person than the princess who pointed her finger at me earlier. Anyone would be surprised.

(...Tsundere? Not! This is... a bluff? This is her original personality and the other one was superficial huh.)

As I remained silent unable to process what's going on, the princess resumed.

"Pardon me for my late introduction. My name is Katrina. I could never thank you enough for saving me from that predicament. Please just call me Rina."

And now she's thanking me, I don't get it. She even told me to call her by a nickname. I can't find a word to say.

(Where should I even start? Gotta be careful or I'd dig myself a hole here. Is this princess convinced that it was my doing? How come?)

I haven't given up here. It's my chance to get back to 'Ordinary Route'.
At the rate this is going, I'm definitely heading to 'Kingdom Arc' if I go with the flow. That's no joke. But my instinct is telling me.

(I'm already at a point of no return... wonder why? Can I really not stay in 'Ordinary Route'?)

I grumbled inwardly. Princess Katrina still intends to keep talking despite my silence.

"I have a favor to ask of you. I realize it's impudent of me, but could you please save me?"

And thus the princess said the words I feared most.

204 Unforeseen!

Unforeseen situations could arise anytime. That's just how it works in this world.
Exactly like my situation now.

"Oy, you there and you. Also, that man over there! Lend a hand. We'll pay you."

The mercenaries called for help from the men inside the stagecoach.
Those men are ordinary people. They don't take well to dead bodies, nobody proactively steps forward.

"Oy. Tch! Damn. Fine, go help those knights move the tree then."

The asking mercenary changed his approach.
Their work wouldn't go smoothly either if it took too long to move the tree, and there's also the danger of beasts coming over.
Those knights also seemed exhausted from the fighting, they were having trouble with the tree.
And if these mercenaries managed to get these passengers to help, the knights would have a better opinion on them.

The male passengers took to it and stepped out of the stagecoach one by one to assist with the tree moving work.
I alone went to help the mercenaries with the bodies.
Since I knew it'd take too long for these mercenaries alone to deal with all those.

"Hm? You wanna help us? Go ahead and line up those bodies on the roadside."

I nodded silently and started doing as asked.
All while praying for them in the afterlife.

(Blame your bad luck if you wanna blame something okay.)

"Ou! This one's a damn fine sword! It's my main now!"
"This fella's got lotsa cash on him. The hell, we're makin' a huge killin'!"
"Thought this job was getting old. And lookatit, massive profit. The armor's done for, but their swords' are all good stuff."
"But y'know? Why'd all of 'em got done in all of a sudden?"
"Fer' sure, the heck was that. But who cares? Think 'bout all the cash we're gonna drown in selling these."

I overheard the mercenaries talking.
Someone was peeking on them. From inside a wagon. The royal wagon.
I didn't notice. I couldn't possibly notice.
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
The royal family side was done treating the wounded. Fortunately, nobody died.
Once the tree was moved out of the way and the mercenaries were done taking care of the bodies, just as we were about to set out, a lone girl came out of the wagon. The royal wagon.
From what seems to be the escort knights' leader, I could hear, "Princess, you mustn't come out!"

(...I've got a bad feeling about this... No, no way, can it?)

I'm already on board the stagecoach but my alertness level went to maximum when I heard the word 'princess'.
Sounds of footsteps coming closer to this stagecoach.
Her voice was sonorous yet had a tinge of arrogance and selfishness to it.

"You over there... I'm not talking to you! The man hiding his face in hood next to you, yes you!"

Other passengers leaned back while making a stir as the so called princess pointed her slender fair finger at me.

"You! Come and entertain me! I will hear no objection!"

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 203

203 Kingdom Arc (lol)

And then, on noon of the fifth day, we ran into 'that'.
A luxurious looking wagon is being surrounded by about 50 men in filthy looking attires who are weirdly well commandeered.
Around 30 knights are guarding the wagon, but some are on the ground, some look wounded while still holding on to their swords and some are frantically trying to keep the wagon safe.
There's a fallen tree ahead of the wagon preventing its escape, and only around 15 knights look fit to still be fighting.

(Oh crap... This is heading in the worst direction. This must be...)

Our coachman has stopped our stagecoach far away from the scene of attack. Safer this way.
The mercenaries aren't moving out either. Yep, their job is to escort this coach, not that wagon.
That's not why I think this is bad. It's because I've noticed this being a 'flag' that sets off an 'event'.

"...That's a wagon belonging to the Kingdom. Being 'made to look' like it's been attacked by bandits eh."

I overheard the mercenaries mentioning 'that', meaning I really should not give it a hand here.

"Another assassination in the succession war huh. Those royal family bunch sure are wild."

I heard 'Another'. I couldn't help having my mood worsening.
Disgusting. I feel restless. Even though I tried to convince myself that it's not for me to butt in nor do I have a reason to, I just couldn't contain it.

By the time I heard sounds of clashing swords, I jumped out of the stagecoach, abandoning 'Ordinary'.

(This is just a one time thing. I only need to end it in an instant and get back without anyone realizing. Then I'm back to ordinary.)

===  ===  ===

I picked up a sword of a fallen knight and ran around in Accelerated state.
Swinging my sword at every single bandit lookalikes. I feel no resistance under Accelerated state. Which is terribly dreadful. But now's not the time to think about that.
Dealing with around 50 men was annoying, but I kept at it leaving only a man who had no sword out.

(This guy looks to be the one in charge, guess it's better to have him arrested? Like to find which faction and all... nothing to do with me though.)

I rushed here in a hurry and yet got to be this calm now.
I returned the sword to the knight and ran back to my stagecoach.

===  ===  ===
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

Thud thud thud, sounds of something falling in succession. I turned my face in the exact opposite direction.
I already know the end result. Gotta act like it's got nothing to do with me. Also, I don't wanna see the harrowing spectacle.

"What in the hell going ooooon!?"

I could hazard a guess as to the owner of this yell.
Not a second later, another voice could be heard, 'Arrest him!'

(Yup, that's one matter taken care of. I'm back to ordinary now. Yep, 'Ordinary'.)

Before long, smell of blood drifted here. There were about 50 of them. All now headless. The cut arteries must gush out lot of blood.
It's easy to imagine that carnivorous beasts from the forest would gather here sooner or later.

The escort knights also realized that as they kept yelling in an attempt remove the fallen tree.
That tree must have been the bandits' handiwork. And this must be a plan to assault a royalty high on the succession right.
It's also easy to guess that information about their route must have been leaked.

(Let's forget about all this once I reached the Kingdom. I'm not going to stick my nose in.)

I just know. Getting involved in this mess will thrust me into the so called 'Kingdom Arc'.
The problem is how to avoid it. Thinking about it, I'm already an actor in it.
It all stems from how easily I'm spurred to action. Though I'm confident I'll be staying incognito this time around.

However, that thought process never accounted for unlikely scenarios.
One of the knights came over and gave an order.
The order itself wasn't necessarily odd.

"Oy! You lot are travelers heading to Kingdom are you not? You are to help us dispose of the bodies."

Despite the word help being there, this is compulsory. You cannot object to this.
The mercenaries replied back. Shrewdly at that. Negotiating for rewards.

"We'd love to if those bandits' belongings and money get to be ours."

"Permission granted. Do as you wish."

The knight looked at the mercenaries in derision before quickly going back to the royalty wagon.

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 202

202 Mercenary's Way Awesome

They're three mercenaries who once killed Forest Seeker magic beasts in our path. Plus three other mercenaries.
Noticing that, I pulled down my hood and retreated my face deeper inside. Gotta keep them from noticing me and raising a flag.

"This much just from an escorting job to Kingdom eh, easy money."

Each of the mercenaries spoke as they walked up here.

"Here to Kingdom, Kingdom to here. Round and round, it never ends tho'."

"S'long it pays the bill, no complaints here. We're pretty much wagon escort specialists. What else it's gonna be."

They went to the elderly coachman earlier and began discussing things.
Must be about schedule. It was over quick. They're used to it I'm sure.

"Dear passengers. We shall be departing. Please take your seat on the stagecoach."

A lots of passengers got on. There were also those who saw them off and said parting words.
I got on the last, and the stagecoach departed.
The start of a trip.

(Ah, never asked how long till we get there... Ah well.)

We're gonna get there on schedule for sure, I muttered as I saw the empire gate getting smaller.

"Please be a smooth journey."

I should have taken more consideration and fantasized what would happen more.
Since time immemorial, traveling in 'Fantasy' is always without fail accompanied by events.
But it's far too late. I was already in one without ever realizing it.
A proof that no matter how much I seek 'Ordinary', it always comes to vain, in fact, getting involved in a mess is the default for me.
As someone who doesn't believe in destiny, I am currently heading straight toward the classical 'that'.

Three days had already passed since our departure. A completely peaceful trip so far. I sighed a breath of relief at this uneventful-ness.
The passengers all acted in various manners whenever we camped out. Those who ate the meals provided by the coachman, and those who brought out their own.
And then there's those who didn't bother to eat the provided dried jerky and hard baked bread and went to sleep early.

As for me, I didn't take out my own meal and had them together with the other passengers.

(Ah, my camping experience had always been extravagant huh... this is how ordinary camping looks like...)

Despite all the longing for ordinary, my common sense is still world apart from this world's. I gotta shrink that gap.
As I keep chewing on the jerky in search of flavor, I heard the mercenaries grumbling.

"Haa, this shit sucks. My strength ain't gonna come out eating this junk."

"Drink yourself dead once we arrive at the Kingdom. Bear with it."

Even these mercenaries started getting fed up by the fourth day but it's obvious they're used to it.
They alternated the night watch shift like usual that day as well.

But apparently they didn't overlook the bandits lurking in the forest.
They only acted like usual to prevent alerting those bandits.
I was impressed by their account on it the morning after.

<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

The mercenaries were quick to act. I couldn't sleep that night yet I never even noticed the lurking bandits inside the forest.
I only did after hearing the groaning of a bandit who had his stomach pierced by a sword as he fell.

The mercenaries had secretly contacted other mercenaries during their night watch shift change. Readying their combat formation in secrecy.
It came as a surprise to me when they halved the number of a dozen or so bandits in a flash. It was done so quick.

First, they left their sleeping bags and stuffed them full to make it look like they were still sleeping.
Then they went around the bandits under the cover of darkness and ambushed them swiftly. They were so smooth at it they looked like some sort of special force.

Must be proof of their long experience in battle. Them saying they're specialists in escorting jobs is no bluff.
The operation started at the most exquisite timing just when the bandits were closing in on the camp site.
The bandits fell into a disarray, all but the leader got done in.

These bandits were routed out so brilliantly and yet, unluckily, yes unluckily enough that leader pointed his sword at me.
He must be trying to take me who just happened to be awake as a hostage.

"Stay away! What the hell are you guys! Dammit! Just when my luck finally turned around in this banditry business!"

"Man, that was over so quick... I mean. Aren't you mercenaries folk way awesome?"

As I sighed at the pitiful bandit, the mercenaries were quick to point out my situation.

"Oy oy, you ain't gonna get nothing praising us, y'know? Appreciate that tho'. More importantly, shouldn't you mind more 'bout your safety?"

That warning was directed at me and the bandit leader.
My life is in danger with the sword pointed at me, while the bandit leader is gonna meet his end the moment he killed me regardless.
The tension must be at max. But this stand off was just a waste of time to me.

"Help me. Please."

I'm aiming for 'Ordinary'. Thus I pleaded for help even with a monotonous tone.
The bandit leader turned his sight at me with a puzzled look on his face then he got his arm cut a moment later.
The mercenaries didn't miss their chance. They zeroed in on him at once and slashed.
That was the decisive strike. The mercenary swiftly lopped off the leader's head afterward.

(Whaa! Stop that, quit it with splatter in my sight would you! Why do I gotta watch this when I've done nothing?)

Criminals receive harsh treatments in this world. Arresting them here would just mean more work. They'd likely get the capital punishment anyway at the Kingdom. Villains virtually have no human rights in this world.
However, the opposing side saw this as an extra income. They immediately began looting the bandit corpses once the battle was over.

"Bwahaha, easy peasy amateur bandits. Made a killing!"

And now these mercenaries look like the villains here. However, they're always treading the line between life and death in this line of work, so this extra income is part of their motivation, their reality.
And thus the problem settled without me raising unnecessary flags.
But, this creates another worry.

(So this is mercenaries' 'Ordinary'... What a dangerous world.)

It feels so far away from the 'Ordinary' I yearn for.

(No wait, I've done something similar too, quite a few times... but they were all out of necessity.)

I'm not like these mercenaries, I'm better than them. However, I still did the same thing at the end of the day. Acting like I'm better than them is just an excuse.

"Alrighty, we gotta move ahead a bit. Smell of blood gonna attract beasts. Wake everyone up."

Other passengers who never noticed the assault got woken up.
Some of them screamed when they saw the bandit bodies, but that was it. We moved our camp site smoothly.
The new site was about 100 meters ahead and the fourth night of this trip ended without any other issue cropping up.
