Paradise Shift Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Book 1

All students have gathered in the gymnasium. Cicadas' voices echoed in the air conditioner-less hall through the open windows.
So the gymnasium is another building altogether huh. I was sure that training hall served as one too.
So yeah, it's the closing ceremony for the end of first term and also the day they're making our test results public.
Me? I've been one of the most studious student the past month. It helped that I found the subject interesting so I didn't really hit a snag.
Just that my language and math scores are merely above average, same scores as I got in my original world. My total score itself leans on the high side.

Then it's time for the problematic ranking announcement. Honestly, I think this system is akin to a public execution. Regardless, the demonic ceremony that'd decide our caste was held.
As I scanned over the list of victims--

"Well damn, Shousuke you're at the very top of the whole dang school."
"Well, it's my usual spot. But looking at individual scores, I lost to you in tactical study and practical exams. Fumu... You really are not good with mathematics and Japanese language I see."
"I'm studying real hard on that right now, dangit."
"Fumu? Even though they're not in the enrollment exams?"
"Wha? No way, you're not pulling my legs?"
"No. Perhaps if you're aiming for an university, but vocational schools don't have them, no? I suppose some schools have a minimum requirement to clear... But high schools graduate shouldn't have any issue, don't you know?"

Nyo way! Then what are all those times I spent frantically studying reference books to the point I reduced my training for!?
Why didn't anyone tell me! Okay yeah, it's just common sense here! ...Guess this stuff will keep happening for a while...

"Yuuki, can you spare some time? Come to the Teacher's Lounge."

Our homeroom teacher called me. Is this about my trip to Tokyo?

"Teacher. Did Yuuki make another mess?"
"What do you mean another. Of course not, right teach? I'm not in for a sermon, am I?"
"Hahaha, don't worry. I just want to discuss his trip to Tokyo. But Yuuki, your scores shot up ever since you hanged with Shousuke lately. And here Sensei was sure Shousuke was aiming for Tokyo as well."
"No, I'm not qualified yet. I have confidence in theoretical subjects but everything else isn't quite there yet. But... I would like to take up an employment that will take me to the city, no Grandia one day."
"Hm, really now. I've been in charge of many third year over the course of my teaching career... But, Shousuke, Yuuki. You two especially stand out among them. I hate to sound like I have a bias... But I expect great things from you two."
"Uee, quit piling on the pressure teach. What if I summoned leather trousers in the experiment, I wouldn't have the face to go home."
"Kuku, you just have to tough it up when that happens. Thank you, teacher. If you'd excuse me."
"Yeah. Make doubly sure you don't get caught in trouble over summer break."

I was brought to the student counseling room, and sure enough Satomi-san was already there.
The topic is about our trip to Tokyo after all.

"Thank you for waiting, Yoshikage. I'll explain your schedule for the trip over summer break."
"Yes, teacher."

I thought we'd do the Summoning Experiment on the same day we arrived at Tokyo and go back home after a day or two of free time... Apparently not.

"Summoning Experiments have students recommended by schools all over Japan as well as people who made reservations waiting for their turns, yours hasn't been decided yet. I believe students from outer regions get priority but that could still be two or three days. Considering that, you will stay for a week there."
"No kidding. How about our hotel fares?"
"Worry not, the school will cover that. There's a subsidy from the government as well... It's probably a more extravagant hotel than the one teachers and board of education members usually stay at."

Uhyoo, seriously!? I bet it's gonna be a five star hotel or something!
Can I expect great food? Or a chance meeting with a rich onee-san?

"And now, about your chaperon."
"Ah, are you coming with us, teacher? Or will it be my homeroom teacher?"

Ah, right. It's still considered a school excursion after all, of course there's gonna be a chaperon.
Umu, here I was hoping to deepen my relationship with Satomi-san even if I don't get to meet an Onee-san.
No, uh, I have no ulterior motive. I'd just like to have a friend from the opposite sex.

"No, your teachers are swamped with work during summer break... A personnel from the research institute... That is to say, a staff member of Akimiya Company will be your chaperon."
"Uwaa, there it is again, Akimiya Company!"
"Don't say 'uwaa' you... Akimiya Zaibatsu poured a huge amount of money into the spell formula development, it only makes sense they're involved. Your chaperon this time is an employee of a Training Facility under Akimiya as well. Haven't you been visiting it as of late, Yuuki? That one."
"...So that place is Akimiya's too... Sure they don't have Japan under their thumb?"
"Hahaha, could be. Your detailed schedule is on these guidebooks, take a good look and prepare accordingly. That's all from me, any question?"

Nothing here. I took a glance at the guidebook and didn't see anything wrong.
 Satomi-san spoke up.

"Umm, do we get a free time until our turn for the summoning...?"
"Right, feel free to go out as long as you stay with the chaperon. Make sure to consult with them first."
"I understand I don't have any more question."
"Same here."
"I see. Take care in Tokyo both of you. After all, Tokyo is not only bustling with people all over the world, you can also find plenty of Grandia natives over there."

As someone who's never set foot out of this prefecture my whole life, I'm getting kinda excited.
I have always imagined Tokyo as a huge metropolis, but the one in this world... Must be even more bustling.
Will I be alright. Won't I get lost?

And then, the last summer break of my high school life started.
I'm set to head for Tokyo the day after tomorrow, and today, on the first day of summer holiday, I have to go see the Training Facility's staff member who is to be our chaperon.
I'm told to gather at the training facility...

"Oh, there you are Yuuki-kun! We're not open yet, come in through the staff door okay. The other girl is already waiting inside."
"Ah, it's the receptionist Onee-san. Could it be you're our chaperon..."
"Yup, yup, that's me. Just so you know, I'm dispatched straight from Akimiya Company's head office."
"What, you could have told me sooner."
"But I want to surprise you."

Our chaperon is the receptionist Onee-san I usually come to. Huh? Doesn't this mean my Onee-san meeting wish has been fulfilled already.
Satomi-san was already waiting inside the staff room Onee-san brought me to.

"Ah, good morning Sasa... Yuuki-kun."
"It sounded like you were about to say panda's feed. Morning, Satomi-san."
"Ahaha... I'm still not used to it yet."
"My, how innocent. Now, an introduction is in order. Sasahara-kun, you don't know my name, do you?"

Yep. She doesn't have a nameplate on her, I've been calling her Onee-san.

"It's Shimizu Akemi. My age is classified. I'm an employee of Akimiya Company. I also happen to be this facility's chief."
"Eh! That's amazing, a woman and so young too... You're my role model."
"Hmhmm, aren't I? So? Is that enough surprise, Sasahara-kun."
"Yup, out of the left field. I thought you were a part timer."
"...Well, I get why you'd think that."

We introduced ourselves with full names. Akemi-san already knew my full name, address, height, weight, Ether Energy and my preferred weapon though.
Apparently, Satomi-san had never gone to this Training Facility.

"You know what, Satomi-chan? Sasahara-kun is this facility's strongest regular. Our regulars include college students' battle clubs and amateur battlers, yet he's never lost a match. Defeated a lot when he first came here though."
"R-really? Sasahara-kun is really strong at school too... But I didn't know he was that strong."
"Don't flatter me please. Makes it harder when I come crashing down."

Quit it, so embarrassing! This Onee-san talks too much!

"Okay, that should do for our first meeting. About time to open this facility up... So? Are you training? I'll let you have freebies today."
"Ah, then I'll take up your offer."
"Ah, I need to shop around in preparation for tomorrow, so I have to go..."
"Got it. Let's meet up here tomorrow. We'll go by car to the station."

So yeah, I did my share of training today and thought of adding my bangle to three on the way home.
...It's weird how my Physical Boost keeps getting better and better yet I still can't use magic.
Maybe if I took all these bangles off... I could do a Dragon *ll solo?
I could probably hold my own against Rio-chan now.
Hoping for a revenge match one day with that little girl.

The day of departure. I didn't sleep in and got on Akemi-san's car to the station on time.
We're gonna ride that Shinkansen huh... Sure we don't need an anti-G training? I can only hope the insides aren't full of pink-colored splatters.

"Err... Found our seats. Sasahara-kun, you're on the passage side, Satomi-chan on the window side. I'm right next to you over the passage."
"It's filled to the brim. I guess it is summer break..."
"Yep. But this car is exclusive for students and their chaperons you know? Arranged by yours truly, Akimiya Company of course."
"Oh man, that's so scary. By the way... How long does this ride to Tokyo take?"
"Should be around an hour or so, I believe? Let's get to know each other better in the meantime."

No way! I recall it should have taken three hours though!?
By the way, I asked the fare and it cost around a third of what I knew.
...The gap in science advancement seems pretty big.
And then, we really arrived at Tokyo over small talks.

"I've seen it before... But it really drives home how fancy real stations are like when you see it in person..."
"Ahaha... Our local stations are mostly unmanned after all."
"Fufu, that's for sure. But our destination is still a bit off from here. We'll be heading to the floating city by a private bus from here."

Tokyo station. I've seen it on TV before but the one in this world is even larger in scope and even has got monorails running.
And that aforementioned 'Floating City' is the biggest thing that separates this world's Tokyo from mine.
As the gate to Grandia is located out on the open sea, an artificial island has been built around it which houses an international airport. A huge floating city was subsequently built on what was originally Tokyo bay in order to facilitate an easier access to and from that airport.
You'd think that sounded like a pipe's dream, but thanks to the existence of sorcery and magic, the science in this world has been bolstered to the point stuff like that Shinkansen is made real... Somehow. It's probably Akimiya related again.

"Monorails are always fully occupied by general public. So we have private buses ready for participants of the Summoning Experiment. Well then, I have to leave you two for a bit here. All chaperons must travel together in a group, I'll see you again at the hotel."
"Gotcha. Let's get going, Satomi-san."
"Yes. See you at the hotel, Akemi-san."

We headed to the bus stop where students had gathered.
It's not only students from our prefecture. I saw students riding on trains from other prefectures getting off in the station... I bet they all agree to take on the summoning experiment in order to better their odd at the exam.
The acceptance rate... Seems super low. Elites from reputable schools must be taking the exams too... Apparently that also includes students from Grandia. And even students who've had first hand experience fighting monsters.

"I'm getting nervous, Satomi-san."
"U, un. Everyone here might become our rival after all."
"Yup yup. I sure don't want to be the man that summoned something real lame after someone else summoned an incredible one right before me."
"Uh... I'm afraid to even imagine that."

We got on the bus which traveled through city roads.
So many lanes damn! There's even bicycle-only lanes... Bicycles? Is it just me or are they floating? And glowing? What the heck I want one, looks super handy!
I acted like a total country bumpkin but thankfully everyone around me reacted the same way.
Things I've seen, never seen, and things I didn't even know exist. The bus made its way through this metropolis full of the unknown before finally heading for a completely foreign world to me, the floating city.
Uhee... Is this super long bridge safe? It's Japan, the capital of earthquakes you know? Won't it break?

"...I see it. The scale's all weird. It's like I'm seeing another Tokyo up ahead."
"Err, apparently the size is about a fourth of Tokyo. Half of the population are Grandia migrants, most of sorcery magic institutes are located there, so it says."
"Hohou... Think they're selling fun stuff like Grandia weapons there?"
"I think so. I'd like to look at Magic Linkers myself~"

Dangit, you're a magic type! Teach me how to magic please!

We're getting closer to the floating city. I took a glance at this world's Tokyo Bay out of curiosity.
Ah, the sea is blue. Cheers for this world and its clean energy domination.
Our bus passed though a district full of skyscrapers before heading to an area full of hotels.
This place is apparently a popular sightseeing spot, the No. 1 foreign tourist destination, over Hokkaido and Kyoto.
You need to get through a real stringent inspection before you could land here though.
They ran announcements inside the bus calling for schools and the affiliated students to get off the bus one by one.
Looks like each schools is allotted a specific hotel. Guess it's hard to rent an entire hotel.

"Uwah, the hotel just now was so big. Wonder what's ours like?"
"A small private home. Capsule hotel. Business hotel chain. Net cafe. Go on and pick your poison!"
"N, no! That can't be it right, tell me it's not."

Satomi-san always reacts cutely, it's worth teasing her.
Before long, the only people on the bus are students from our prefecture.
 The bus's final destination was--

"Aki-mi-ya again!"
"Waa! I can't believe my eyes, it's an Akimiya Company's resort hotel!"

It's a super huge hotel that easily makes all the hotels we saw on the way here pale in comparison.
Oh yeah, Shousuke said something about them dabbling in resorts....

"Oh, you're here at last. Let's go and check in. Oh but, I have to go visit this district's branch office after this, you two will stay at this hotel... Is that okay?"
"Yes, of course! This hotel looks more bustling than our local shopping district!"
"Ahaha... You got that right. Yuuki-kun, I heard you can borrow Akimiya's latest models at this hotel's Training Facility. How about giving it a shot?"
"Ah! That sounds interesting! I'm going."

Oh man, I can probably spend my entire summer break in this hotel.
Maybe they even got a game center... A-at least arcade machines like UFO catch isn't any different than my world's one.
We checked in after Akemi-san. The scale's all weird. The lobby alone is twice as big as our school's gymnasium.

"Fufufu... Time to head for the penthouse on the top floor."
"Pent... what?"
"Yuuki-kun, that's the grade above Suite... I can't believe it, I probably won't stay in another ever again."
"Hmhmm~ I am from the head office after all. It's all about connection, you see."

By the way, other students staying in this hotel got Suite rooms.
 The very best huh.
This insane hotel is 80 story tall. It took no time at all for the elevator to get us there.
I'm told it's a repulsion by way of magical this and that... Nope, don't get it. It's fast that's what!
This penthouse thing apparently takes up the whole floor and there's even a garden on the rooftop.
It's pretty much a single family home with a garden.
It finally hit me how amazing all of this...

"Waa...! Look, look you can see the sea from here Yuuki-kun!"
"Well, we're on a floating city after all."
"Oh, oh right. But, it's really amazing... They even have an artificial sandy beach... It's like we're not even in Japan anymore."
"Well in reality, it's almost entirely not Japan. I mean this region may be located in Japan, but with all the international research institutes and embassies here, this place isn't as pretty as it looks, politically speaking."
"I can imagine... We have the advantage since Japan is the nearest country to the gate and the language over there is an almost exact copy of Japanese for some reason... But a lot of countries probably don't take that too kindly."
"That's right. Also... For some reason, Akimiya Zaibatsu and Grandia authorities get along so well, it's almost like they're couples."
"Akimiya again! I bet they have some sort of connection with the other world."
"Who can say... Well, I am an employee of that company for once."

After unloading our luggage, Akemi-san changed to a suit and left for the branch office. She'll be back by evening, we're free to loiter inside the hotel until then.
I'm heading straight to the Training Facility in order to rent the newest weapon models at the VR facility.

"Ah, mind if I tag along? Maybe I'll get a better result if I learn how to move my body better."
"Solid plan. Okay, I'll go and get changed, you should too Satomi-san. We don't have to wear our uniforms anymore."
"U, un."

We had to wear our school uniforms until we arrived at our hotel. So we don't forget that we're still students or whatever they say.
I put on a rougher looking fit than I usually do so people don't sniff me out as a country bumpkin. Rough, not rafu (nude), okay.

"Did I keep you long? How do I look, Yuuki-kun...? Tell me if I got too enthusiastic because we're in a big city..."

Satomi-san showed up wearing a fashionable half-sleeved white dress with her hair unfurled straight instead of her usual braided style.
She looks more grown up than usual, I think she's got a make up.
...Oh no, I skipped a beat. Our class boys would definitely go wild if I showed them her screenshot.

"You look good. No really, I'm getting all jittery over here."
"Y-you sure!? Okay, let's go, I want to try the newest device type too."
"Hmu, Satomi-san, you're a 'device' caller huh."
"Ah, un. I mean, weapons sound... like they're made for fighting, like they're the same things as the more savage weaponry."
"Eeh... 'Weapons' make it sound way cooler though."
"That's probably, you know, the difference between boys and girls, I think?"

I see. But I'm a hardcore 'weapon' caller. Willing to compromise with calling the 'Weapon devices'. That's the official name by the way.
So in the end, they're weapons. Don't get the difference.

"Hohou! It's super huge! Uwoo, so many tough looking folk!"
"Yuuki-kun, you look so happy. Fufu, you might even end up losing, I'll be cheering you on."
"Hehehe, bring it on. Let's go and rent our weapons."

We went to the receptionist and asked for the list.
Normally the weapons we can rent are constrained by our age, Ether Energy (innate mana's strength and aggregate amount), and our grades at school.
Add to that the rental fee which limits my choice to oldest Akimiya model. I usually only pick other models if that one's not well maintained.
However! In this facility the fees... Are included in the hotel fares!
In other word, I can get my mitts on the high-class latest and even Grandia weapons that were usually out of reach for me.

"Uhyou, this is just the best, the best. Then I choose... Akimiya's limited model... Samurai Edge Version V!"
"Ah, the type that looks like a Japanese katana. It does get you pumped up doesn't it. Then I'll... go with the ring and bangle set. The mana inductance on Akimiya model is too strong for me, I'm going with USH-made."
"That sounds so expert-like. Heck I didn't even know about that mana inductance thing on Akimiya models."
"Huh? It's really strong though? They're intended for beginners."
"Hee, I don't really feel it."

Light blades, bullets and arrows emerging from weapons... devices are generated by the user's Ether Energy, that is to say, Mana. Shooting and maintaining them require delicate as well as burst control.
Maybe that induction thing was what enabled me to fight the way I did?
By the way, mage type like Satomi-san directly converts their mana into magic. The gear known as Magic Linkers assist and increase the efficiency of that conversion.
A hole-like thing on user's body is required to control and emit such mana, the bigger it is the better they are at it... Maybe mine is completely shut off...?
But my mana demonstrably comes out of my body. I mean Restraining Bangles take effect when I put them on.
As I brushed the three bangles on my left arm, I couldn't help feeling frustrated over my inability to cast magic if only a tad.
Uumu... Ice Katana! Or, Flaming Blade! It's my dearest wish to make that real...

"Oh, this is the Samurai Edge type... What a beautiful stream pattern..."
"You look like a deviant staring at a katana vacantly like that."
"I won't deny that! I mean just look at this, the metal part has been mirror polished just like real katana. This kind of stuff doesn't even affect its combat performance yet the maker went all the way out of passion! How can you not admire it."
"I guess it does look pretty... The, mana light..."
"And on it goes."

Unlike what usually happened, the blade shone excessively bright white while I was feeling like something got drawn out of my body in a huge flow.
Uwoo, it's wrestling control away from my arm.

"Wait what, what's going on! I can't control it!"
"Could it be defective...?"
"Gotta reduce the output... Got it barely under control I guess?"

I feel like holding a hose that gushes out water uncontrollably.
Isn't this a wee bit dangerous?

"I'm gonna look for my sparing partner."
"Ah, I read you can have a personal match using the VR here, want to give it a shoot?"
"Ooh... So this is the rumored... Viva big city."

No time like now, to the training room I go.
This one here must be for personal use.
The inside is pitch dark. The VR system is on already.
Then lines of light started glowing, creating a wireframe like pattern in the room.
Wow... It's like I'm in a fighting game's training room.

"My opponent is... A humanoid huh."

He was there before I realized. He looks too much like a real human for a dummy.
He looks to be modeled after a man nearing his thirty.
His weapon is... a gun and a short sword. That's a different kind of an exciting combination.
My opponent suddenly pointed the gun's muzzle at me, there was no starting signal.
My legs already moved the moment I saw that. Kicking walls all over the room, I focused on dodging the barrage of bullets.
I can move. I feared for the worst equipping another bangle, but I could fight just fine.

"Haa!"

I slashed with the blade while holding down my weapon's output to prevent overload. My opponent blocked my slash with his gun instead the sword before immediately shooting back point blank range.
 Whoa there... That grazed me.
Barrage of bullets rained down upon me once again. I gradually cut our distance short while dodging them and just when I got close enough to to bumrush him... I upped my speed by one gear and rushed in.
I put more mana than before even if it means overloading the device a bit, and flicked away the gun along with his hand as he tried to block again.
But he managed to narrowly parried my katana with the sword in his other hand before jumping away from me.
...So strong... Can't believe AI is this strong... The thought of being able to fight this every day is simply divine.

"...I should think up a way to fight long range opponents."

I readied my sword and watched my opponent. But he wouldn't budge at all.
He was checking his gun when--

"Operator, stop the training. One of my devices is broken."
"Wha!? Eh, human!? Eh!?"
"Hm? What's wrong?"
"Ah, it's a real life human...?"
"Yes I am. What get you so surprised."
"Err... I'm sorry!"

My bad, I went in the wrong room it seems.

"Kukuku... I see, you're a civilian. I thought for sure this Training Facility sent you here as my opponent... And you thought I was an AI enemy projected by the VR huh."
"I-I'm sorry... I should have checked first."
"No, I'm at fault as well for not locking the room. No point blaming you."
"Ha, haha... Um, about your device..."
"Don't worry about it. That was a tester I don't normally use. But... You're quite a fighter aren't you. You still look young too."
"Ah, I'm third year in high school. I'm staying here for..."
"Aah, are you a student recommended for the Summoning Experiment?"
"Ah, yes I am."

The man treated me to a drink at the break room.
Uh... Thankfully he's not mad. I wouldn't know what to do if he demanded me to reimburse that mighty expensive looking device.
As it turns out, the man is a battler here for a job. He's in this facility to make an adjustment for his friend's devices during his day off.
Sorry, friend-san. I went and broke your device...

"I see... Still around 18 huh."

The man got lost in thought and went silence.
...Hmm. Wonder if something's on his mind.

"Ah, Yuuki-kun, found you! That room you went in isn't for VR match... your acquaintance?"
"Hm? Your girlfriend I take? Miss, I just had a little match with him."
"Ah, no I'm not. We're from the same school here to participate in the experiment."

She denied so fast and clean.
Too natural at that I'm kinda hurt.

"I should take my leave. You have my thanks. That was a good time."
"Yessir. Thank you for keeping me company too."

The man left the Training Facility.
Oh man... Knew it, battlers are strong. That guy definitely hadn't gone serious too.
He even admitted those weren't his main weapons.

"There's always someone better than you out there huh..."
"Isn't that obvious? So, Yuuki-kun. Can I have a match with you."
"Aye aye. I'll put my whole being into running away, you go ahead and shoot magic my way."
"Fufu, got it."

 The man laughed gleefully.
Another man showed up next to him out of nowhere and struck a conversation seemingly curious about his countenance.

"Someone's in a good mood. Must be fun breaking someone else's stuff huh."
"Kuku, that was that boy's doing."
"Yeah cause you went wild swinging it around."
"Fumu? Are you telling me your custom made weapon was so cheap a single hit by a boy was all it took to break it, while it was in my hand?"
"...That's..."
"...That boy had three Restraining Bangles equipped. The general public type those may be, he fought me under that limitation and destroyed this. I may have been playing around but I don't know a high schooler capable of such a feat."

The man and the other man smiled together.
They're both in extremely good mood as if they have just found a new toy.

"Hehe... Fine I'll forgive him. Been a while since something that fun."
"Yeah, the feeling's mutual. Truly, interesting. I am curious, what is it that he will summon."

The two men delightfully laughed. However, their laugh didn't extend to the look in their eyes.

"Speaking of which, this means you will have to use ready-made goods again for the time being. Won't it affect your mission?"
"Huh? I'mma just be an escort. Why'd I care about my gear when it's doomed to fail anyway."

The two men stealthily vanished from the hotel all while exchanging loaded word.

Chapter 3

Book 1

I believe losing helps you grow.
After my defeat on Rio's hand that day, I started going to a different Training Facility in another more prosperous district at the city center, farther than my usual route.
I now have two bangles to suppress my Physical Boost level and go there every single day as if my life depends on it. The train fee would have gotten out of hand if I didn't buy a fixed period pass.
And then... I wrote the blank career choice form with 'Tokyo Training School' and submitted it.

"Yuuki-kun! Mind helping me out with this exercise?"
"Ah, sure thing. Which one?"
"This one, a question about military formation, regarding utilization of the situation and environment..."

That said, seeking healing I've been spending time to teach girls after my recent studious spurt.
Ah... This is it, my range for opposite sex gotta be my age or older... That time back then was but a temporary slip up.

"I see, taking account into the position and environment... A formation that suits mountainous regions and cliffs is it..."
"Yup. Number of personnel varies depending on that factor right? So for this case, the magic division should--"

I'm enjoying my student life at the height of summer.
It's a period of time where school library and the nearby food courts are jam packed with students with open books in front of them.
I'm here at school on Sunday because our homeroom teacher asked for my presence.
By the way, the schoolgirl I'm talking with right now is from another class. Coming to school just to study on Holiday, what a diligent girl. I dunno her name tho'.
That was when the school broadcast made an announcement.

『Third Year Class C, Sasahara Yuuki-kun. Third Year Class A, Yoshikage Satomi-san. Please come to the Teacher's Lounge.』

"Ah, sorry, that's me."
"Ah, me too, let's go together."

Thank you school broadcast. You taught me this girl's name.

"Thank you for coming here. Even taking up your free time."
"No worries. I quit my part time job this year."
"Same here. My parents had some business nearby."
"Hmm, I see. I take it you're aware why I called you two today?"

 Nope!

"Yes. It's about our course, right?"
"That's right. You two aspire to enroll at vocational schools in Tokyo... Have you consulted with your guardians?"
"Yes. My father has agreed despite a slight reservation."
"Ah, I've gone and consulted with the public office. I've discussed a lawyer about my home and land as well."

I have no relative. Well, I guess there's still a mother technically speaking but... Who cares about her. My only family are my late dad and grandparents.

"Right... Someone's gotta care for the house and land in Sasahara's case. But... If you manage to get into a public school, and under scholarship, you could get various stipends and supports. Make sure you check on that front."
"For real!?"
"Oh... Sasahara-kun, you've had it hard."
"'S fine, 's fine, I'm not actually poor or anything."

We were relatively well off thanks to dad's inheritance and insurance payout.
Well, I had to toughen up when my grandparents passed away one after another when I first entered high school.

"Here's the thing. It'd do you good to have some sort of skill or craft if you're planning to enter a vocational school over there. Ordinarily, I would advise against high school students participating in a Summoning Experiment.. However, I believe it's best for you two to take part in one."
"Even though we're still in high schools!? But... That's..."

What's that. My study on this world hasn't gotten there yet.

"You only have one shot in a lifetime. It's true that you might receive a better special ability or a blessing once your body and mind have matured. But there have been cases of high schoolers summoning Artifacts from the other side, rare they may be. Naturally, they were enrolled to top Tokyo schools, making waves there even as we speak."
"But... I'm not sure if I have the talent..."

 I know about Artifacts.
It's the term used to refer to historical arms or lost magic and ability. Most of which come from the other world, 'Grandia'.
I've heard cases of historic objects or spiritual beings from Japan popping up too.
Knowing that I might get my hands on them is super enticing.

"...Let's see. I went and did the summoning on my twenties and got myself a gauntlet commonly found in the other world. Here."

A leather gauntlet suddenly manifested on teacher's arm.
It looks quite well made... But it's hard to say it's anything worth much.

"Your participation is not compulsory. But if you are willing, I will help you apply for a Summoning Experiment held at a Tokyo-based research institution. Make your choice within the next three days."

Teach handed out forms to us to which I handed back right away after filling mine.

"I'm in."
"Right off!? Well... I figured you would."
"Sasahara-kun... Umm, I'd like to consult with my parents first."

What's there to hesitate about? I mean what if I got a legendary sword? An incredible magic spell? I'm not gonna let this chance pass by.
Aim for Excalibur, Laevatein! Meteor, Flare, Ultima!
Not like anyone in this world get the reference though.

After leaving teacher lounge, I was about to leave school for the training facility since I got nothing left to do here when Yoshikage-san called out for me.

"Sasahara-kun aren't you... afraid? You know that if you summoned something worthless, you'd have to keep it all your life, right? You'll have a better chance at getting equipment at the very least if you do the summoning once you're an adult."
"Tell you what, I don't actually get what it's all about. I only found out about this system in that room. But my goal right now is to get enrolled with my own power, so it doesn't really matter."
"...You're amazing, Sasahara-kun. Compared to you, I'm..."
"Just for a reference, what's the common results for high schoolers takers?"
"Err... According to a rumor I heard, a last year's graduate received a piece of clothes, for children at that..."

Uwah, that's way painful. Being child-sized is just salt on wound.

"...By the way, what do you hope to get, Yoshikage-san?"
"It's, um... Ideally, I would love to have a familiar spirit. A small animal would be nice..."
"You can summon something like that too!? Were there cases like that in the past, like written concretely in the book or something?"
"Yup, there were. Active members of Survey Teams, famous Battlers, League players and so on. They've got books with their profiles."
"Oh yeah, that genre completely slipped my mind.. Thank you, Yoshikage-san. I'm gonna stay a little longer here."
"U, un. Later, Sasahara-kun."

I made my way to the library after thanking her.
Gotta give Yoshikage-san a token of my appreciation next time. Since she gives off a class rep's vibe... Maybe I should buy her a book or two.

I went to the library and borrowed a book titled 'Living Breathing Modern Heroes' which got a list of stars, being careful not to disturb other students knee deep in their studies.
I'm seeing plenty of students with open notes here after all.

"Soul Summoning... There's a type that allows one to wield a Soul's power from their heyday, and another type that materializes them in real world... Eh? Contracts with Familiars with a living body?"

Apparently chemistry, science in this world has developed more than I imagined at first.
If a soul has a strong will and ego, it's possible to cultivate their body using their soul as the base and practically reincarnate them into this world.
Past examples include reincarnating a horned rabbit, a relatively popular monster in isekai 'Grandia'.
Another example is about someone that run about in battlefields riding a horse-like monster.

"That sounds like a dream come true... What's this? A power to control flame by indwelling a fire dragon's power."

That makes you a protagonist! Can't people here use that subject to produce manga and games?! Even if that games end up being 2D pixel-based!

"Oh, that you Yuuki. I heard you got called just now. What's up?"
"Oh, Shousuke, studying at school on Sunday or something?"
"Yeah."

Shousuke whom I've been buddied up with lately showed up.
 So diligent. Way diligent.

"You know I'm gunning for a Tokyo-based vocational school, yeah? That got me thinking of taking part in a Summoning Experiment."
"Wha... You're really gonna go for Tokyo school!?"
"Eh? Oh sure am, you're not?"
"I'm... enrolling at a university next prefecture over. It's not a vocational school but it's famous for its combat division."
"I see. That sounds like a solid plan... But I personally want to see how far I can go."
"...You, do huh. Still Summoning Experiment... Teacher must be serious about it. But there's more than a few vocational schools in Tokyo, right? What's your pick."
"I got no clue. Haven't looked it up yet."

Gotta be a school I could get in at least... Or so I thought, but apparently there's actually not a lot of vocational schools in Tokyo, and all of them are prestigious schools.
And... Tokyo is the closest city to Grandia which means a lot of students there not only hail from foreign countries, some are even from Grandia.
Rumor from the grapevine... Some of them are not human race.
Just the other day, I happened to catch an elf starring a variety show on TV.
She was way too beautiful. I almost lost myself gazing at her.

"The most prestigious school... Would be 'Schweineritter Integrated Vocational Academy' under Akimiya umbrella... Though you're only gonna get a chance there if you pulled a big one in the summoning."
"Akimiya again. Is there even a limit to their domination."
"Heard rumors of them dabbling in resorts too. Next choice would be 'Grandia Academia - Japanese Branch', this one's got the main school at Grandia. It's a popular choice because you get the opportunity to learn magic and combat techniques from Grandia, but competition is fierce."
"Hohee... Ya think they got elven students there?"
"Well, why won't they?"

That makes my heart aflutter though? Wonder how their ears feel?
Maybe it's like picking up sasa kamaboko with chopsticks? Uh, guess that's rude of me.

"Tokyo huh... You're getting even farther ahead."
"Nothing's decided yet. Might end up becoming a ronin."
"Nah, you could have picked any one school here if you wanted. Even I got flooded with scholarship offers. You must've gotten a lot more, right?"
"Hmm? Now that you mention, got lots of letters delivered to my home. They're asking me to join their teams and whatnot."
"Battle Team? Oh yeah, I got offers to enter professional leagues too. Our local leaguers and individual athletes aren't doing so hot lately."

Guess it's akin to professional baseball scouts? Tempting... But first, I'd like to check on all the choices presented before me first.
I've gotten this far in a self-taught manner ever since I wandered to this world. I'd like to walk forward a bit more with my own two legs.
Afterward, the two of us discussed about our future careers until afternoon.
...This isn't half bad. I couldn't get along with you in my original world after all.

<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >

On my way home. I couldn't get in the mood to train today with all the thoughts swirling on my mind so I decided to visit my dad and grandparents' graves on a whim.
It's almost Obon time, might as well.

"Grandpa, grandma. Also, pops. I'm probably... not the Yuuki you know. But I'm gonna give it my all. I might have to leave this town."

I offered flowers I bought on the way here. Not to forget incenses and candles.
I put my hands together and spoke like making a vow.
Sunlight reflected on the granite shined on my face.
I interpreted that as them encouraging me before leaving the graveyard.

"Oh, someone's here for a grave visit. It's too early for Obon... Guess people who can't make it on the date exist too in this world."

I saw silhouette of people from afar. Mwu, he's got girls with him, outrageous!
Judging from their hair color, guessing they're from Grandia?
...Wait what, why're there two girls tagging along, outrageous!

"Kuh... I want a girlfriend too... Lemme take a look at the surname of that envia-outrageous man."

I glanced at a grave with flower offering and saw the name 'Nishida'.
Dangit, I dunno you Nishida, but get blown up!

Back at home, I prayed in front of the altar despite having just come back from their graves.
This house will be left with no caretaker once I go.
 ...Well, no way around it.
I had a chicken katsu lunch box I bought at the neighboring lunch vendor yet again today.
Gotta start thinking about cooking for myself... Gonna live alone over there.
Kuh... Do I really have to say goodbye to these cheap lunch boxes?!

"...Summoning huh. If I end up pulling a living creature, I'll have to think about its living expenses too. Wonder if I could get supports from the government."

Next day, Monday. It's our last week at school before break.
A lot of students are talking about how they spend their summer break. Some are taking internships, personal exams, and open campus.
Naturally being high schoolers they are, the majority are making plans to enjoy their last summer break in high school to the fullest.

"Yuuki! Let's go on a trip to Hokkaido! You haven't been hanging out with us lately."
"Ah my bad, that sounds real swell and all but I gotta go to Tokyo."
"Oh, what, a vacation in Tokyo!? When did you get so rich."
"Ain't no vacation. It's for my enrollment."
"You're kidding me... Hey hey, there's gotta be elves, demons and beastkin in Tokyo yeah? Take a sneak pic of them for 'ol me will ya."
"Do you know right to one's likeness? That ain't happening. I'm gonna grab you some souvenir, don't forget mine now."
"You gotcha. A wooden bear it is."
"...Make it food please."
"Caramel mutton."
"Anything but that!"

I thought to myself while fooling around with my classmates.
We're probably gonna go our separate ways toward our future choices and dreams when we graduate high schools even in my original world.
There's a chance I won't experience something like this ever again.
But... If I had stayed in my original world, I'd definitely pick the trip with these guys.
I'm truly grateful to this world for giving me an entirely novel choice to pick from.
While I was having that slightly old man-sounding thought, a girl I'm not too familiar with called out to me.

"Sasahara-kun, someone's here for you. It's a girl from Class A."
"Hm? Ah, Yoshikage-san."

Is she here to talk about the Summoning thing from yesterday? I left my friends and walked up to her.

"What's up?"
"Err, can we go somewhere with less people..."
"Got it. Then... How about the lot behind the gym. That is if that hasn't been turned into a delinquent haunt."
"Fufu, of course it hasn't. The teacher in charge of our school's Student Counseling is a former battler, don't you know?"
"Nope, totally clueless. Oh, scary scary."

I'm hearing noise behind me, but whatever, let's go to the gym.
There's not even a speck of cigarette butt here. Actually, there were no delinquents in my original world either. Anybody's like that got the boot right away at this strict school.

"...Rural delinquents are pretty much an urban legend now."
"Ahaha... That's for sure. So what I'm saying... I'm going to participate in the Summoning Experiment too. I'm just like you, Sasahara-kun. I want to believe in myself and take a step forward, even if things don't go the way I want... It doesn't matter."
"Hm, gotcha. What about your parents?"
"『I did that in my thirties and only got myself an ability to cast spark magic better. All the more reason since you can do it for free on school's recommendation.』"
"So you normally... gotta pay for it."
"Sounds like it. The government helps lessen the burden these days but it cost you 500000 yen back then."

It's like how it's cheap to get a driver license.

"And that's why I'll be in your care during summer break. We'll be heading to Tokyo together."
"Ah, right. Right back at you, Yoshikage-san."
"Just call me Satomi. I'm not used to being called that."
"Okay, then, you can call me... Yuu-kun."
"Un, let's do our best, Yuuki-kun."

Ah, you're just gonna ignore it huh.

The first bell rang just as I got back to the classroom. But my buds wouldn't get off my case even though teach could be coming anytime.
'How dare you go all lovey dovey with a girl from another class, you traitor.'

"Nah it ain't like that. It's cause we're taking the same course."
"Dangit... Maybe I gotta change course too? Wait, I can't, shoot."

I'm saying it's not like that. We're not even taking exams at the same school.
We had a quiz during afternoon class to review our progress before summer break.
Unfortunately, not every subject in this world is game-like, science and mathematics classes are still present though English, literature and classical literature classes are barely taught. Instead, we've got classes teaching history, tactics, magic and ability history from Grandia.
Frankly, they're just as difficult... But it's pretty fun which keeps me motivated.
After the last period, I went straight home since I got no sweeping duty nor was I in a club.

"The trains look normal... Wonder if they're the same too in Tokyo. The cars here got different designs than my old world's. What if maglev trains are the norm here, can't wait to find out."

I'm waiting for my train at the platform. Heard the longest wait for a train in Tokyo is three minute long. How many of them are running at once anyway.
Today I'm not going for the usual Training Facility but the biggest one located in the center of the town.
There's a lot more people and the equipment are more modern, yet I haven't struggled once even after I got two Restraining Bangles equipped.
I knew it. That girl, Rio-chan is special. She should be ten year old or even younger too... What's up with that.
Maybe she's got some real amazing summon dwelling inside?

"Phew, landed safe and sound. Oh, that the Shinkansen. Wonder if I'm gonna ride that come summer break."

The trains look normal. But the Shinkansen ahead is clearly different than the one in my world.
...It's got wheels. They're glowing blue and floating above the railway track.
Are you for real man... Wonder how fast it goes. Gotta check it out.

"Ah, those are the women from the graveyard... Is that a demon? Wings on her head... Succubus or something along that line? And the other woman... an elf!?"

A white haired elf-san and a woman with wings springing from her head are waiting on the platform.
The man with them... Nishida-san maybe? No wait, they're not necessarily the relatives of that grave. They're about to ride the Shinkansen from their platform.

"That's so nice! Flowers in both hands! Oh, the train's departing? Wonder how it's like."

The chime signaling its departure got played before an ear piercing sound drowned it out.
A moment later... The train moving and the shockwave it produced shook my body.
...Fast, too fast! What was that!? That's some unbelievable initial velocity!

"Uhee... I'm half anticipating to get on board, half too scared to."

There's lots of regulars in this Training Facility being in the city center and all. Student uniforms stand out among them.
Meanwhile my usual Training Facility are full of students from my school and some college students since that's the only school nearby.
But students from various schools visit this facility which makes for a good stimulation.
Naturally, this facility has its use for exam students as well. Some schools have combat as an enrollment exam after all.

"Now then... I'm gonna go with USH-made Blade Model today."

I chose a different weapon than my usual pick. Still in the shape of a sword but it's not intended for beginners like Akimiya model... You tend to get made fun of if you use those.
That's not the reason for my choice today though. It's simply because the Akimiya model here isn't well maintained.

"Hm, this red light... Its katana-like form... Yep, can't go wrong with katana."

Apparently you can order custom made weapons like the one Rio-chan used.
I checked out the official Akimiya home page for them and the list price easily exceeded that of an automobile. It's a whole another world I can't step into.

"! There you are Yuuki! I'm gonna close the book on your undefeated record today!"

A student from another school picked a fight with me just as I grabbed my rental weapon.
His prep school is the best in this prefecture which is mirrored in this world.
I think I remember him being stronger than the other regulars here... But I think Shousuke is still stronger.

"Oh, bring it on. I just got here. Won't say no to a warm up."

End result? My undefeated record remains unbroken.
 Can't believe it held up.

Chapter 2

Book 1

That class was apparently the last period, time to go home.
...Oh right, there's the thing about VR facility. Guess I'll go check it out.

"...Weird, I wasn't paying attention when I was going this morning but I could spot plenty of changes with the town now."

It's the road to school I had been taking for the past two years. I have no shops or convenience stores I'm particular about yet there's just something different about the path somehow.
The content of posters plastered all over have changed and so do hardware stores selling stuff like kettles and shovels into enigmatic sports supplies stores.
Also, I feel like the cars on the road have this futuristic design about them now.
Honestly, the thought of being stranded in this alien environment is terrifying.
Sadly, I love games. The thought of 'I wanna look around this unfamiliar world!' is even more domineering.
Frankly, I'd have jostled my way inside these supplies store if not for the class earlier.
What's this 'New Arrival of Akimiya Company Latest Model - Blade that Cleaves Through Darkness' about. That got me super curious!

"Gah! First, I gotta train! I won't stand getting left behind in this super fun world, nope no way!"

Let's go to the game center! To the oasis, the sole business district of this countryside!

"...What the heck is this... It's like some sort of giant batting center."

So yeah, here I am at the Training Facility. It's way bigger than the school's one, I can't help myself from flinching.
I see people shouldering what look like bags for carrying bamboo swords going in.
Are those real weapons? Are you telling me we can really swing them around inside a VR space here!?
Considering the class just now, even students can move around like superhuman. Add a sword to that and... Does that mean people can unleash moves you see in manga and anime!?

"Yeah right. There's no way you can shoot stuff out of a sword--"

I steeled myself and moved my legs into the building as I wiped away the delusion in my head.

"Something came out!?"

Sorry, something really does get shot out of swords. Stuff like a red glow in the shape of a sword, or a blade made of light.
There's a huge monitor in the entrance of the facility displaying a footage of people training. A crowd is watching the video intently.
The way they're making commentary makes them sound like ardent fans and experienced veterans.
I stepped in near two slightly dull-looking men and listened in to their conversation--

"That's a second generation model from USH Company. Can't believe someone could move that well swinging around such an old stuff..."
"Man you don't get it, do you. Plenty of people love that peculiar mana color. Heck, I won't hesitate to take a loan if I ever got the chance to buy one."
"Hoo, red is it. But well... I bet he's gonna lose. Not only his opponent's got the better weapon, guy's clearly the better fighter as well. Who's that swordsman anyway."
"That's a new face alright. Seems like he's got Moves from That Side too under his belt..."

What the, what kind of exciting conversation is that!? Sword model? USH Company? That Side's Moves?
I'm getting all giddy. What even are 'Moves', can I learn those, can I shoot out stuff out of sword like that!?
I put my sight back at the monitor. The two swordsmen are currently locking swords.
One has got a Japanese Katana with a mechanical design. That must be the 'USH Company'-made one.
While the 'That side Moves' swordsman, his opponent, is using a plain pole handle with a blade made of light. Looking like your standard futuristic sword.
It's pretty huge. Would be classified as a greatsword in games.

"...Daang, wonder if those weapons are on sale in the sports stores I saw earlier?"

Not sure if I've got enough cash since I recently stopped taking part times though.
Then a new development reflected on the monitor.
The greatsword wielder blew his opponent away while they were still locking swords, flinging him straight to the wall.
 That's the end.

"Wonder if bigger the sword, the more powerful it is? Oh maaan, Can't wait to take a crack on it."

I went straight to the receptionist counter.
A receptionist Onee-san wearing a school teacher-like business suit is sitting there.
...It's a tight fit... This sight alone makes the trip here worth it.

"So umm, it's my first time here, what should I do."
"My, those uniforms... You must be a student of Satomine High School. Then, may I have your student card and get this form filled?"
"Ah, okay."

I brought the paper she handed out to the writing space and checked the content.
I'm hit with yet another headache-inducing problem.
...What is 'Hereditary Ether Energy Absorption Gate. Yes/No.'.
I don't know no 'Ether Energy Aptitude', what's a 'Latest Known Ether Energy Maximum Amount'?
Some kind of phys ed test maybe. Think my school have them, gotta be.
Oy oy, what have you been doing all your life here, me?

"I'm sorry, I don't know the numbers for these entries..."
"Ah, you can skip them. They're optional. But some places are pretty fussy about them, you'd better check your results at the school okay. You can use them nation-wide as long as you've got them registered."
"Ah, gotcha. Then... Can I rent gear and stuff here?"
"Yes that's a given. For a high schooler... Here it is, pick from this list."

The list contains three separate categories.
Ranged weapons like bows and guns. Melee weapons like swords and spears. And--

"M-magic!? Magic exists!?"

Art Gear that supports magic casting boosted by Ether Energy (Mana).
Of course I'm picking this one! How could I pick any other!

"Excuse me, this... Akimiya model, Magic Linker? And also, Akimiya's Edge Model? Can I borrow them."
"Alright, Akimiya set it is. Yep, a popular choice. They're user friendly for beginners."

She gave me a left arm guard and... a wooden sword-like object but made of metal.
I equipped them as I grew more and more excited at their SF-like looks.
The size's just right. I quickly made my way to the training room and saw people warming up in a huge joint gymnasium-like space.
I see many doors ahead, guess those are where the VR spaces are?

"This sword's... Pretty heavy. And how do I even use this Art Gear."

I thrust it out with my left hand but nothing's happening.
Swinging it did nothing either. Nothing I did garnered a reaction. Eeh....
But, today's objective is to replicate my classmates and their impossible acrobats in the class earlier.

"There must be a knack... Like maybe there's a switch I can flip that allows me move around like them."

I swung the sword. It's just a swing. I jumped left and right. That's just the old me.
Something, there must be something. Surely... something that only exists in this world.
If powers like the stuff you see in anime and game exist here, there must a way to bring them out.

"My body kinda feels warmer... Is something circulating inside me...?"

I picture in my mind. All the training the protagonists in all kinds of anime did.
Something is starting to circulate. I spread it throughout my whole body and then I acted.
My body gradually moves faster as if I'm being guided. My vision blurs, the scenery I see turns into afterimages.
...Make it more compact. This is far from what I saw in all those media. They could move a great distance instantaneously and create clones.

"Dunno if I could do--oops, bit my tongue."

I jump. And then what seems to be this training hall's ceiling got right in front of me.
Wha!? I jumped several meters above!? How do I land again!?
Betraying my concern, I landed without even feeling the impact or making a sound.
...Oh, I did it! This is how you move your body!

"That was amazing! Are you a trainee?"
"That was even more impressive than us college students. Do you belong to a team somewhere?"

The older young men nearby came over.
Chance. I'm gonna ask a lot!

"Haha, I mean it's that stuff you often see in anime. Dr*g*n B*ll or N*r*t*. I just focused and asked myself inwardly if I could do those, see? Then I just will it as I move."
"...Anime? What medium is that? Can you really get better by watching it?"
"Oy oy, which country's culture is that... Actually, getting better by watching that anime thing sounds, yeah... I mean, of course you'd want to keep it to yourself. My bad, didn't intend to press you on it."

...Eh? Aren't those pretty famous work?
Something's wrong... I thought this was a ridiculous world in itself, but it's not all pluses it looks like. Something more fundamental seems to have shifted.
I saw the young men off before quickly making my way out of the training hall... Moving toward the city center, to the shopping district.

"No way... It's not here... Not there... There's no RPG, actions, anything at the game corner!"

It's a game shop I was a regular of. Yet, the only games being sold here are all old stuff from more than three generations ago.
Golden age of pixel art. Yet, there's still no action games to be found anywhere, only sports and quiz games.
Same with manga, books and light novels.
Some work do have fighting as a the main subject, but it's nothing truly fantastical, at most it has characters moving like I did in the facility earlier.
...It's not here. Stories depicting superheroes are nowhere to be found.

"...What the hell's going on. Then what about the games in my house!?"

I ran out again. I jumped out of the train I took and ran again.
To my house at the foot of a mountain. I took the key from my wallet and just before I unlocked the door--

"The world... has changed. Maybe, my circumstances too...?"

A slight hope and apprehension. I opened the front door... And found a familiar sight.
A picture of my pops holding the baby me in his arm.
A picture of some random mountain.
 A vase with artificial flowers.
I dropped my shoulders at the unchanging sight and removed my shoes... before heading to the main room.

"...Figured. I knew nothing has changed."

An altar. Decorated with the pictures of my dad and grandparents.
...Ah, it's the same as ever.

"Wait no... Games, games!"

It was nothing more than a wishful thinking. Nothing to get so down about, gotta face the present.
Once again, what I found in my room was an old game console I don't remember ever buying.
No wait, it looks brand new. What about the games themselves...

"Arithmetic Master! English Expert! Quiz Academia! What the hell are these!"

Eyy, what's up with this world!
Why am I here in the first place. Let's assume that it's not that this world has changed but it's an entire parallel world.
 ...Shoot, I got nyothing!

"...Am I gonna stay here forever, living the rest of my life here? I mean, that sounds fun and all... But is this anxiety I feel cuz I know nothing... I better study about this world for now."

From that day on, I must look like I've been transformed into a serious diligent boy from outside perspective.
On the second day, I listened to lessons seriously and went to library to read history.
On the third day, I asked what were once my game friends about all kinds of sub cultures.
On the fourth day, I consulted teachers about common future careers and enterprises.
On the fifth day, I browsed the internet seeking even broader information.
I kept this on for about a month.

"Today marks a whole month. I finally got a good grasp... about this world."

To make it simple, I call the most important event as the 'Turning Point' of this world.
About half a century ago. A mysterious power spot emerged on the open sea of the Pacific Ocean 2500KM to the east of Japan's coast.
This power spot showed up like it was some sort of black hole and brought about a huge unrest all over the world, inviting the creation of survey teams.
But then, several days later, people started coming out of that power spot.
...Another world or isekai. That day, earth established a connection with a whole new world.
Cultural exchanges between the two worlds started budding, and mysterious phenomenon started occurring all over the earth.
It was apparently the effect of isekai energy 'Ether Energy (AKA Mana)' flowing from isekai into this world through the enormous power spot.

"...No wonder cultural development shifted once the extraordinary became the ordinary... Of course video games, RPG, anime and other media are sparse.... Ah... So I can't even enjoy new games releasing anymore."

Even the top game maker in my world, Shintendo, is a famous combat suit maker nationally here in this world.
The eternal second, Saga Corp is a company that specializes in Mana conversion power plants, supplying Japan with clean and efficient power.
Sona Corps known for many stuff including electronic goods and games is a devoted weapon developer in this world.
But there's an even larger corporation that dwarfs even those big threes, leading the flock in this world.

"Isn't Akimiya Company... nothing more than a stationary maker in my original world... Think they also offered teaching materials or something."

They also managed private libraries and nurseries but I'm pretty sure they weren't anywhere that big.
But in this world, not only are they developer of weapons and new technologies, they also manage the defense between two world, and possess combat units that are active nationally and internationally. A huge military corporation.
All these weapons and military stuff, even permeating to combat class in schools. What's the deal with this world anyway.
 The answer to that is--

"Sasahara, you're overworking yourself. I commend your positive change as of late... But it's noon break. Go get something to eat. Here, your favorite Pork Curry Bun."
"Ah, my bad Shousuke. You're a huge help."
"Don't mention it. But what's with the sudden shift in attitude."
"Well... It's almost summer break, no? I just got the urge to do better in the exams."
"I, see. All good so long you're not in trouble. Hate to admit but it's getting harder to snatch victory from you lately. You might even grab a seat in Tokyo's universities now."
"Haha, I guess. But I haven't decided on my career choice yet."
"You haven't? Was sure you were gunning for 'Underworld Survey Team'."

Yep, that 'Underworld Survey Team' is the reason everybody is practicing combat in this world.
Another world connected to earth, isekai. I'd describe it as a world of 'Sword and Magic', yet it's actually a peaceful one.  This 'Underworld' is another thing separate from isekai or earth.
Just as there's a gate to isekai, there are other gates to Underworld full of danger. A danger zone that hasn't been fully explored yet.
Earth is involved in the survey effort or so it goes.

"I'mma leave that to... the pros. Only geniuses are up to snuff for that kinda stuff, don't you think?"
"Well.. yeah. Oh right, what about making a debut as a Pro Battler, Yuuki? You get to be a star and stand out a lot, fit you to a T."
"Haha, you got a point there."

Fight hand in hand with isekai inhabitants, rise up as the next generation warrior is the common talking point in this world.
Though well, of course there's many other courses as well, it's nothing as scary as conscription.
In fact, a lot of people look up to pro sports combat players.

"Phew, Pork Curry Bun never gets old."
"Only available in winter, for your information."
"Yep. Maybe I should get my fill before it gets hotter out there."

After school, I've been dropping by the same Training Facility for the past month.
Tell you what... I still can't use magic even now. No uh, I did look up about it okay? I looked up a lot of stuff and even read up middle school books in my house. But the result has been nil!
All that said, I'd like to think my Physical Boost has gotten amazingly better. At least I no longer lose a single match to anyone in this Training Facility now.

"Ah, there you are Yuuki-kun."
"Cheers. Can I borrow the usual set today?"
"Akimiya set right? Isn't it about time you give up on the Art Gear? I mean I don't know anyone who can't use magic at all but I'm familiar with plenty who can't use magic in practice and have no problem getting by, you know?"
"Figured as much... Okay, I'll just have the sword today."
"Here you go, Akimiya Edge Model. We're planning to stock a new model since that one's getting long in the tooth."
"For real!? Let me have a spin once they're available."
"Of course. That aside... you might finally meet your match today. There, have a look at the match on that monitor over there."

Now that I'm a regular, I'm on familiar terms with the receptionist Onee-san.
Her smile and nice body versus a boy at the height of puberty, me.
You could even say talking with her is the reason I come here.
But, as I shifted my view to the monitor on the lobby--

"No way... It's seven on one... But she's overwhelming them."
"Oh, that you Yuuki-kun. Come, take a gander at that girl. She's against a team of seven college students and amateurs. She's so small too... guess that's what they call a prodigy?"

On the monitor, a team consisting of seven young men including those I talked to back then can't even land a hit with their magic, guns, swords and spears before half of them were incapacitated... Against a little girl no matter how you look at it.
Bluish silver hair. Think she's around primary school age.
She keeps moving in all directions while wielding a greatsword taller than her.
Regarding her hair. When people from isekai get married to earthlings, their children are often born with unusual hair color under the effect of Mana.
In reality, some of my classmates have blond and red hair. I mean, I thought for sure they had an image change before summer break at first.
By the way mine's black. Too bad, so sad.

"Guess that's the match. That makes a complete defeat for everybody here. How about you, Yuuki-kun?"
"...Do you gotta ask?"
"Yep. Alright, go and vindicate our shame."
"Ow yeah! Hang on this mud boat tight and watch my back!"
"You mean a mud boat reinforced with cement."
"Both of those will sink."

Dang yer strong! I got the heebie-jeebies!
As I walked up to the girl thinking that, the girl was putting away her weapon with a bored look.

"I knew and all... but this countryside's way too boring. Can't the job just be over and done with..."

The girl's mutter sounded more lonely than angry.
I'm guessing she got brought here for her parents' job.

"No argument there about countryside. Ey, little lady over there. How about a match with this big bro!"
"Ah, un. Sure why not... You saw how it ended while I held back. Still wanna go?"
"OKOK! This big bro is undefeated here! Ok, sorry I lied, I just finally beat the last one recently."
"Really? Then let's. Your weapon... is a rental model? It might break if my custom model hit it...."
"Eh, seriously? Even in VR?"
"Yup. I mean they still hit each other. And it's only weapon to break."
"...What do, don't think I got enough to reimburse."
"...Okay. I'll take care of it. I just can't with this boredom."

Come now, cute little lady, let's get in that room over there with big bro...
 Over here, officer.

"Please start the VR."
『Here here! That Onii-san is the strongest regular at this facility, just so you know~』
"Ah, you weren't lying. Alright, let's do it."
"Big bro's shocked you didn't believe him~"
"Ahaha, sorry~."

The scenery in the inorganic looking space transformed into that of outer space.
The girl held her weapon aloft at a similar spot with the training area in my school
A great sword with a blade glowing blue. My body started trembling the moment she took it up.

"...Try to not break down right away, boy."
"Eh, wait, your character's chang--"

An aura gushed out of her sword in that moment before she made a rapid dash forward and used the momentum to swing her sword.
I hold my sword to take the hit... While enhancing my sword by filling it with spirit.
Both my hands went numb. But I managed to guard against her strike.
Counter, I swung my sword horizontally but she was no longer there.
Above in the air, behind me, then above again, the little girl moves rapidly all over the place.

"Waee... Hey hold it!"
"...You're fast."

I ran, jumped, kicked the ceiling, kicked the wall to chase after her.
My sword could barely graze hers.
I could narrowly fought back by kicking away her blade whenever she unleashed a counter.
As I struggled to keep up against this clearly superior fighter--

"I've had enough fun. Thank you, boy."
"Wha!?"

The blue blade swelled up. She was already right before my eyes the moment I noticed that.

"Heaven Judgment 'Alter Style'."

...Ah, this is the so-called... 'That side's Move'... Huh.

"...I don't know this ceiling."
"What's a rice with generous tempura topping called?"
"That'll be Tendon."
"Yup, you should be fine if you can drop a punchline. Onii-san, you're really strong!"

I was on the bed of the facility's medical office when I came to.
By the way, I'm not actually unfamiliar with the ceiling. I'm also a regular here.
I keep getting sent here whenever I practiced too hard.

"Uh well... I'm actually quite confident in my strength. You're just way strong for a pint-size."
"Hehe, aren't I? But you know, not only Onii-san exchanged blows with me, you even made me use a Move. Most importantly, you got this far with raw Physical Boost alone. That's not normal you know?"
"It's not? I can't use magic so I've been practicing nothing but Physical Boost."
"You just can't get that strong with practice alone... No really, you're super strong, you must be holding back at school, am I right?"

 Spot on.
Yep. A week after I started training, I realized how abnormal it is.
I made sure to hold back in this facility, and school's classes as well.
I even went out of my way to have a Mana Restraining Bangle equipped courtesy of receptionist Onee-san here.
By the way, it was worth four months my living expenses. It's fine, I have been saving up.

"You've got that bangle on too. You could go a bit farther if you take that off, no?"
"This bangle stops working forever if it gets taken off. Onii-san can't afford another one, you see."
"Oh okay... Ah, I reimbursed the rental weapon. But you had Ether Energy... actually, Mana I guess? coated over the sword, the damage wasn't much. Onii-san, you're pretty good, for real."
"Aw, now you're making me blush... You're a primary schooler right? Seems like you've got your own circumstances."
"Hehehe... I'm special you know. Oh, I should get going. I'm probably back at Tokyo by tomorrow... Maybe this is goodbye forever."
"Eeeh, Onii-san's lonely~"
"Me~ too~! Just kidding! ...It'll be fine, you are strong. We're bound for another encounter. You shall make your name known in Tokyo. I guarantee it."

I clowned around to cover my frustration to which this little girl responded with jest... When she suddenly put on the same air she had during battle and spoke with the air of an adult.

"...I gotta go. Onii-san, you should get some rest. Hear me?"
"Yes."
"Good! Bye bye, Onii-san!"
"Hold up. Tell me your name."
"Okay. I'm 'Rio'. What about you, Onii-san?"
"Sasahara Yuuki. Go ahead and call me Yuu-chan."
"Un, got it, Yuu-chan. It's bye bye for real!"

I saw Rio off as she left the medical office.

"...I'm, I'm..."

I whispered as if I tried to get the hazy feeling out of my chest.

"I'm not into little girl... Yet I skipped a beat!"

Back From Hiatus

Hi guys, long time no see. I'm sorry for lack of contact the past year as I had been occupied with a great deal of stuff. I plan to get back to translating web novels again but I'm kinda low on the motivation to resume my older series right now (sorry!). So yeah, for now I'm opening up with a new series 'Paradise Shift' by author 藍敦 starting with two prologues and chapter 1. Hope you enjoy them as I do!

PS. I plan to get back to older series eventually, just gotta find the motivation first.

PSS. Thank you for all the people who contacted me asking about my well being. I'm sorry I couldn't get back to you!

Paradise Shift Chapter 1

 Chapter 1

Book 1

After getting through that weird first period, I went to ask my usual game buddies about the class.
I still have some doubts in my mind.
Yet their reply not only broke those doubts apart, it produced more mysteries instead.
『When did you get so smart? You been studying in simulator facility on your way home or something?』
 What the heck is that.
Still suspecting this was some elaborate prank, I pressed my buddies about that SF-sounding term and one of them pulled out his smartphone.
He showed me a promotional video of that mysterious facility which convinced me that this is not the world I had been living in up until now.

"What even is that... That place is supposed to be a game center..."

The video has an idol group you often see in TV engaging in an impactful fighting scene inside a virtual space like the kind you see in SF, anime and novels.
 And here's the catchphrase.
『You're standing on real battlefield here. Assembly, next generation heroes!』
Ok I still get this part if you tell me it's an amusement park's promotional video.
If not for the text at the end saying, 'Endorsed by Japan Education Society'.
Uh yeah, I don't think it's a good idea to use that name for a candid cam prank.
Actually, there's no way these idols would work for free just to pull a prank on me.

"Guess I'll go check it out after school."

As I was making that plan, Shousuke, the guy who butted in the lesson earlier walked here to mess with me.
He usually messes with us with a look of disdain whenever we're chatting loudly over some games. Wonder what he's got bone about this time.
Honestly, I usually just ignore him cause it's gonna eat my time to play net games with how overzealous he is.
But not today. I can tell he's now a different person who's acclimatized himself to this ridiculous world.

"Sasahara. I have to admit that was splendid. But don't you get carried away now."
"Yeah nah, if there's anything I'm carrying, it's trouble."
"...Are you troubled by something?"

By the way, despite his attitude, this guy's not actually a bad guy at all.
People around him hold him quite highly I lose count the times he's been chosen as the class rep.
I bet he couldn't stand looking at me blabbing about nothing but games without a care in the world with my buddies.
Guy's fastidious, or more like busybody.

"Eh nevermind. So uh, where's everybody gone off to?"

Most students in the class is gone before I realized.
We changing classroom? I thought there's no more classes for stuff like phys ed, art, home economics and lab cause we're in the prep phase for college exams.

"What do you mean 'where'. Next period is the combat class. Let's get going."
"...Wha?"

I followed Shousuke to the place where this combat class thing is being held.
I asked him if it was phys ed and he laughed in my face saying phys ed ended after primary school.
Is this like how arithmetic evolves to mathematics.
Following him I went through a passage to where the gym was supposed to be only to find a huge unfamiliar dome facility there.
It's made of a white material that looks oddly metallic. The silhouette kinda reminds me of some secret hideout, scary.
Eh, you want me to get in there? You sure some suspicious men in white robes won't catch me?
But Shousuke nonchalantly went in the solemn-looking double door like it was his home.
Eeh... This is all so weird. No really for real.

"The interior is surprisingly... Normal I guess?"

A lobby-like space is sprawling inside the dome-shaped indoor hall, our classmates have gathered ahead of us.
As for my classmates who don't seem to question this crazy world at all, not only are they forming groups but they're even having a lively debate. What's up guys? Let big bro in on it too.

"I repeat, you are no match for me. Your belief is based on concept, they're not at all tangible or reliable. Faith, only true faith gives us power."
"Right back at you, ours might have started from the same ideology but the fact that it has saved many lives is proof that it's just as good, and not at all inferior--"

Oh boy, what's these two boys' deal. They trying to start a religious war or something?
Two classmates are clashing right now.
They're both sons of churches from their parents, and usually go on like 'I'm not gonna follow my parents' footsteps',  'Me too, I mean I'm an atheist'. They get along so well due to their similar strict environment growing up.
Apparently, I'm the only one who find their interaction weird. Everyone else got this 'These two're at it again' looks on their faces.

"Sure it's okay to let them be, Shousuke."
"It's not my place to meddle here. Their Physical Boost's scores are a cut above the rest after all. That's just how rivals are I think."
"Wha?"

What's this 'Physical Boost' thing about?

The answer to that was made clear immediately.
Our phys ed instructor arrived. Instead of his usual jersey, he shows up wearing something I'd have never expected an instructor would put on.
Rider suit... -like outfit. There's protectors attached all over the futuristic-looking full body suit.
Hold up. Us students are wearing school-issued jerseys here. What's with this stark contrast.

"Alright, I'm giving out your protectors. That's all you're gonna get right now unlike some city high schools who've already adopted combat suits. Keep that in mind if you're planning to go to Tokyo or overseas!"
"Give us those too teach~"
"Yeah, that's not happening. No corporation would want to sponsor a rural school like this."

...? What're you going on about, teach.
I'm at a loss as I grabbed the protectors handed out to me.
It's black, not made of either plastic or metal, also weighs so-so.
Following the rest of the students, I put them on my elbows, knees and shoulders. Also the toe and palm guards.
Oh shoot, I'm getting kinda excited.

"Today we're having a match up for the end of first term! Those who get called, get on the practice area. The rest can watch."

Eeh... Are we gonna have a full contact karate match with these protectors on jersey on?
『Kaay』, I follow my unenthusiastic classmates.
The practice area is painted black with faintly glowing lines in the same pattern as the gymnasium I know.
The first two students walk into that cyber chic-like area.
The first match is between two schoolgirls it seems. Neither of them is familiar with martial arts.
At least my memory recalls them having a friendly chat over handicrafts whenever it's break time.

"Ready.... Go!"

Both of them disappeared in that moment.

"Wha!? Eh, what was that, what!?"

They were initially about ten meter apart in the volleyball court-sized practice area.
Yet they're now exchanging blows in the center of the area, pretty much instantly after the starting signal.
One girl unleashed a sharp upper kick you rarely see even in K1.
And the other blocked that with her palm while simultaneously attacking with the other fist.

"Oy! Are these two fighters or something!? Ain't no way amateurs can move like that!"
"What? That was just a kick riding on the one step move momentum."
"Well I guess that guard was pretty clean? The counter didn't connect tho'."

The other students returned my excitement with languid.
What the? What the hell's up with this world? You two girls were like, 'Let's drop by that handicraft store on the way back~', and 'Okay!' after school just yesterday, weren't you!?
Look at you two now having a high speed close quarter combat battle my eyes can barely keep up with!?
What about knitting wool? Knitting set!? When did you two turn into that kinda combat girls!?

"I give up... I can't keep up at all..."

Hi, yes, it's me who feels like he's got left behind in his classmates' huge shift.
Yep, it's not just those two. From the smallest grade-skipping girl, to my fellow gamers whose reflexes pale in comparison to non athletic girls are looking amazing.
They speed up and move their arms and legs like woosh woosh. I can't find the word anymore.
By the time I realized, only Shousuke and I were left in the audience seats.
To be honest, I'm quite the rascal and not exactly bad with athletic stuff. I don't think I would have lost to this honor student before.
But... It's absolutely out of question! There's no way in hell I can move around like that!

"Alrighty, you two are the last ones like usual. Take a good look, you guys. Kotou and Sasahara are first and the second places in combat class. Oh yeah, makes sure those who aspire to be mechanics inspect their protectors afterward. The dent positions should make for a good reference."

 I have no word.
That's it, this must be a parallel world. And the me who lived in this world must be good at phys ed and bad with books just like me. That fact is transferred over to this environment.
What makes me so different than the rest!?

"I'm gonna win again today, Yuuki."
"Hold on, I've got a stomach ache, I'm gonna pass."
"Quit lying. Let's get going."

Heave ho, heave... When did you get so strong again.

So yeah, I got dragged over to the battle field. What now.
My eyes can even barely keep up with all the previous the matches...

"Get ready! ...Go!"
"Eh?"

A moment later, a fist hit my abdomen accompanied by a gust of wind.
Surprisingly enough, it felt more like getting hit by a tackle over a bundle of clothes. It's barely painful despite the impact.
I still got blown away though. I mean, I'm looking at the moving ceiling right now.
My back slid on the floor before finally stopping at the wall.
Nope nope nope! It doesn't hurt but it's way scary! What are you, a bull fighter!? I'm not red... Oh wait, my jersey is!

"...Oy, are you playing around? Or what, you're really sick?"
"Yea... I probably am. I'm super at a loss here."
"...You're not lying... But you're usually... Ah, sorry, it's my bad."

I don't get it at all.
Confusion, and the fear towards the people around me who use that power.
 But--it also frustrates me.
What, what the heck is this world. I'm attending a class where people do unreal moves like we're in a game... Ain't no way this is not interesting.
But what about me? I can't do anything....
I raised my hand to signal my abstain and slowly walked away from the training hall.

Paradise Shift Prologue 2

Prologue 2

Book 1

Let me ask, do you like playing games?
Fighting games, shooting games, RPG, and online games.
There's all kinds of genres out there, and I love them.
To the point that I started imagining stuff in classes, like say when we dealt with flames and chemicals in science classes, I'd imagine 'This must be dark elemental', or 'That flame gotta have a special power.'
So yeah in a way, you could say I have a 'Game Brain' or 'Game Brain Rot.'

...All that preface aside, do hear out my situation.
Right now I'm in a class taught by a teacher who's been constantly hammering in how our college entrance will be decided by summer vacation, but today none of that sinks in.
To begin with, I can't concentrate right now.
No it's not because some stray dog wandered in or I'm playing with my phone, I just can't wrap my head around the lesson.
 Because--

"What's wrong Sasahara, can't you provide an answer to this basic problem?"
"Ah, err, I mean..."

Hi, it's me, Sasahara Yuuki, the very same boy who don't know the answer to a basic problem.
Actually no, I do! Heck, the answer's in my bone which makes it all the more puzzling!
I'm getting even more confused when I re-checked the question plastered on the blackboard.

『A party of four is under attack by inorganic monsters. An art user in the back has used up almost all of their mana.
Other party members consist of a swordsman, a healer, and a shooter (their mana is low as well). What is the best course of action here.』

 See, it's just weird, right.
What kind of problem is that, what is this, a game?

"Sensei, it looks like Yuuki is stumped, can I answer in his place?"
"No no, I'm just about to."

The class's honor student, Kotou Shousuke, butted in.
Uh what, you don't look the type that plays games at all though.

"This question is not merely about answering, Sasahara. Starting with college, you are required to realistically imagine the surrounding circumstances as well. This affects your mark."
"Ah, yes."

All the students in this class are taking this lesson dead seriously.
Am I the only one who thinks this is weird?

"Err... First of all, we have to consider the environment and the distance to the safe zone. Like say, if those inorganic monsters are made of lava rocks and they're in a volcanic area, they should use up all their mana to cast water magic and defeat the enemy if possible, if not they should use that chance to retreat. If the safe zone is too far away, the shooter should keep shooting at the weakened enemy while they make their getaway."

Welp, I went and said it. My wild delusion.
Now come laugh at me all you want, it's probably some candid prank y'all pulled cause I talk about that game stuff all day usually.
Dammit, this is too much guys.

"...Simply wonderful, what's the occasion Sasahara! Sensei didn't expect such a perfect answer coming from you!? Yes right... Assuming that it's a volcanic area does makes sense in this case... Wonderful answer."
"Eh, for real?"
"For big real. Hear that all of you, that was the optimum solution for these queries, keep that in mind as a future reference! Do your due diligence. Pore over materials for your courses and clear those exercises if you don't want to lose to Sasahara."

Looks like I've wandered my way into quite a ridiculous world.

"I'm heading off! I should be back by evening."
"Yes, here's your lunchbox. There's soup in the pot, careful okay."
"Ooh... Thank you very much!"
"Fufu, you're very welcome. Now go and give it your all today."

Classes haven't started for real, it's still orientation time. But hearing those words from her fills me with joy.
She's not exactly full of expressions yet the faint smile and her gentle voice is sweetly stimulating this early in the morning.
Ah... I'm not sure that's an 'Elven' trait or because it's her.
In any case, I'm sure this blissful morning and daily life with her acting like my own parent will support my new school life from now on.

"Well, it's all been so far, so good."

I run down the mountain toward the enormous site of a school below while feeling excited at the thought of practical class 'Practical Combat Theory' we're having today.
...Really, at first I wasn't sure how I would cope with this world but all it takes was to let nature run its course.
I trace back my memory to the day I lost my way into this bizarre earth yet not quite earth--

Kamisama no Kago wo Kyohishitara?! Chapter 650

650 Where To Go

So yeah, I got them to sell me a side sword someday.
Of course, I didn't ask for one right away. Told them to work on it once they've got free time.
I'll drop by again one of these days to fetch it.
Yet the two of them were eager to start on my request right off the bat. So I stopped them.

"Err? Aren't you still working on that shield? I bet you have a lot of back orders once you're done with that too. I don't need mine anytime soon really, feel free to work on it whenever you've got time. Actually, I'd rather you don't get too eager on it."

"Mumu? Oh yeah, we got plenty of stuff left. Slipped my mind. Neglecting our current job is a sign of third rate craftsman fer' sure. Alright! I'mma put my back onto it! Gonna get it all done in a jiffy!"

"But I can't make a progress if I can't finalize the design... So! There you have it! I'd like to hear your opinion, please Saito-san!"

Makiru dragged me by my arm to her workshop.
She's far stronger than her young girl appearance would suggest. Dunno if it's cause she's fired up or that's her default power level.
She shoved the round shield in my face in the room.

"Err, do you mind settling down? I can't get a word in otherwise."

"Ah, pardon me! I got too enthusiastic. If you would please over here."

Makiru put the round shield back on the table and started pouring tea.
Dongoro didn't come with us to calculate the final tally.

"Come now! Have a long and good look! Saito-san's opinion! Opinion! Let me hear lots of it!"

Despite settling down, she didn't really.

"Err, uh? Mine's no big deal really. So you want to make a decorative round shield? Or is it for practical purpose? Which is it?"
<TLN: Catch the latest updates and edits at Sousetsuka .com >
I noticed two types of equipment in Dongoro Workshop. Extravagant ones and simple yet practical ones.
Hence my question.

"Which, you ask. It will serve as a work of art on display when it's not in use, while also be sturdy with magical enchant for when it's put to use for combat purposes. Thanks to all those mana cores you supplied, we can fulfill the latter."

"What's the client's preferences? What kind of design, or pattern they like?"

"Hmm? They didn't have a particular request, they left it up to us. That's the source of my stump. I could have come up with a design immediately if there was a direction."

Ah, the old troublesome 'up to you'.
This type of people will rev their engine to max on their own if you just give them a nudge in a direction. They'll run off without ever stopping.
An artisan through and through if you may.

"Is this client a man? A gallant type that relishes in battle, or someone who focuses on guarding?"

"Is that necessary now? Hmm? The impression I got from that person is that of a gentle person who relaxes at home watching painting while sipping black tea, I suppose?"

"Then, let's go from there. Combats mean war after all. Normally you don't want that to happen. So how about a war goddess that rules over peace? They're a fair maiden at times of peace and transforms into a gallant yet beautiful object of yearning to those who march into combat. A goddess of war that leads the way to victory."

That's quite chuuni of me if I do say so myself.
By the way, I was gonna blurt out stuff like a stern brawny old man, or a hero that challenges a dragon. Kinda like a reference to Draque 1 though. Vaguely.

I spoke with a bit more flair than usual but Makiru had stopped reacting.
She kept staring at me with an open mouth. I might have gone overboard. Kinda regretting a bit.
But that only lasted a few seconds, Makiru was on the verge of exploding as I was worrying over her.

She ran around gathering papers and pens from all over and started drawing on them, ignoring me altogether. She ran through five, six papers in less than a minute.
I'm no longer reflected in her eyes.

(Let's scram... I'm gonna get dragged into it if I stay here. Drowned even...)

And thus I left the room as Makiru's mind steadily spat out more and more content.
